The New Oxford American Dictionary just announced its 2009 Word
of the Year as being 'unfriend.' This word beat many other words taken from
technology, politics, the environment, and other categories and confirms social
networking as a cultural force worth acknowledging. Unfriend has been found to
be of the same caliber as previous Word of the Year words, such as:
hypermiling, locavore, and carbon neutral.
Unfriend versus
Defriend
Once word got out that 'unfriend' was the new Word of the
Year, debates were sparked online. Some are adamant that 'defriend' is used
more regularly, or that they had never heard of 'unfriend' before.
One commenter defended the 2009 Word of the Year by stating:
"Defriend misses the whole point and is both boring and uncreative. Unfriend
should be compared to undo – which is in social networking exactly what one
does. It's not befriending someone and making acquaintances in reverse, it's
just undoing a function – unhitting the friend button."
Another source
pointed out that the Urban Dictionary had definitions for both words and that
they are nearly identical. Lauren Appelwick, a publicist at Oxford University
Press, Inc. said that "Unfriend was chosen because it's much more common than
defriend." The method for tracking the popularity of these words was not
disclosed but the publicist pointed out that it was very good. She also added,
"It's funny because there seem to be little clusters of people who have never
heard the word 'unfriend.'"
Does 'Unfriend'
Deserve This Honor?
Christine Lindberg, Senior Lexicographer for Oxford's U.S.
dictionary program, deemed unfriend as having "currency and potential
longevity." Unfriend beat other words like intexticated, netbook, sexting,
brown state, green state, and ecotown (A full list of runner-ups can be viewed here).
Unfriend is defined
as a verb that means to remove someone as a 'friend' on a social networking
site, such as Facebook. Other words like sexting
seem a lot more palatable as Word of the Year. It is rare to find someone that
does not know what sexting
means after all of the news
stories and headlines that it made.
Do you think 'unfriend' deserves this honor, or do you think
another word deserves it more? Do you think 'unfriend' is that much more common
than 'defriend?' Let me know what you think in the comments!
