Taking Showers Could Contaminate Drinking Water

Posted March 25, 2010 8:20 AM

From Discovery News - Top Stories:

With every shower you take, you may be unwittingly polluting the environment. As you scrub off dirt, you also wipe off medicines from your skin and pharmaceuticals excreted in sweat, according to a new study. Those chemicals pass through the sewage system and might even end up in our drinking water.

OK. Perhaps a bath would be a better idea, then.

One might start by reading all the recommendations in the bath-breaking thread ....

I for one see this as a sort of vindication for all the times as a young'un when I told my momma that I didn't want to take a bath. I was busy saving the world!

...and what happens when I pee in the toilet?

Then again, I am not taking a plethora of prescription drugs.

Oh, snap! Is beer a pollutant?

This sounds like one of those "problems" in which the decimal point is at least three places off. Sort of like homeopathy, so dilute as to have no effect, which has the auxiliary advantage of no side effects....

But that doesn't mean you can't create a rich and satisifying research career in this vital area.

let's put in for a fifty million dollar research grant to study that in the rocky mountains and then in the Caribbean just to see how far it will go? Any Volunteers?

Some suppose that the decimal might be in the wrong place and others propose a well funded study tour, however the issue is serious and real.

This might be the single largest reason not to use reverse osmosis for recovery of water from the cities and converting it into drinking water. (Far more cost effective than desalination of sea water.)

The major items that we know of are the Eustrogen family. Concentrations of these are sometimes high enough to cause changes in population of aquatic organisms like frogs.

The difficulty encountered is that many of these drugs are also naturally occurring (like eustrogen coming from lucerne/clover (alfalfa)) that cannot be discriminated from birth control pills.

Unlike the nasty "bugs" that can be destroyed by the combination of anaerobic, aerobic UV or chlorine, these drugs just pass through the treatment plants and back into the environment, effectively being concentrated on each cycle as they pass down each river system and through each town's water supply.

By all means be scheptical, but don't be the ostritch with it's head in the sand, do a little research yourselves before dismissing the concept.

The overall water contamination issue is a problem. The showering part is a bit overboard. İ expect that far more exit the body via different routes. İf we worry about showering then İ guess the world is coming to an end!

Okay already! I vow from now on, not to take any more showers. Or baths, or pee or OKAY WHAT CAN I DO ANYMORE! I'm sure the companies producing this stuff contaminate our world more than we will ever do. Even if I wipe my body down with alcohol and towels, they'll just leach into the ground in the landfill.

My shower doesn't pollute the drinking water. I have a septic tank and leach bed, and seriously doubt any of these chemicals could go through 500 feet of earth and rock to get to the aquifer our water comes from.
