Will Laser Weapons Fall by the Wayside?

Posted November 16, 2010 7:22 AM

Reduced funding due to budget cutting and years-late successful demonstrations of the technology may end the hopes of operational directed-energy weapons ever being deployed for just about every branch of the U.S. military, claim some industry commentators. Some technologies showed promising results — for instance, the Airborne Laser Testbed — but were years behind schedule and billions over budget. What do you think is the solution to getting future weaponry developed on-time, within budget, and technically proven?

jeez... lemme see... an advanced star wars laser weapon... or food, water, and shelter for me and my kids.... hmmm... how to balance the budget... ?

Okay got it... just for one year, lets just stop the entire military budget.. just one year... and put that directly into the hands of all the people in the USA and Canada.

USA expenditures... $663,255,000,000.
CDN expenditures... $20,564,000,000

total expenditures...$683,819,000,000

give or take, depending on where you get your info.. there could be over a trillion dollars.

divided equally amongst the citizens... (US & Canada) (total 340,717,950 souls)

would be 2006.99$ each by my calculations for the lower figure, and 2934.98 for the trillion dollar figure.

so... divide by 12 months, and that is $244.58 per month per person... just enough to feed every soul in north america for a year.

I'll vote for that, and not the spacewar tech.. until I see a change in the poverty around me.

I drove by the soup kitchen today in my town, at 5:30 pm... it was packed. I thanked my lucky stars that I had food in the frig. Unemployment is unofficially at +20%.. which happens to be the figure I would believe... not the official 12%.. and I just think perhaps the military spending is a tad inflated... Perhaps we are manufacturing enemies by spending sooo much on weapons and war. I mean seriously... a trillion dollars... while millions in our own countries are starving and living on the streets? At that point, imho, we have crossed into a place where we really have to ask "who or what is the enemy?"

I say, poverty and homelessness is a far greater enemy, and far more easily conquered. Can we feed and shelter the less fortunately "on-time, within budget, and technically proven?"

Why must they be a weapon ,They use them in surgery,I was thinking experimentally ,maybe that really big one they spent all that money on could be used to simulate Northern lights ,Space weather lightening strikes, thunderstorms.sending electricity currents into jumbo storage batteries for use as energy later.DS

They are way behind and massively over budget because contractors to the government like doing business that way. Bid it low and keep coming back for more funds.

The government needs to put projects on a performance basis. Write up the contract for new weapons and if they come in under schedule and under budget they get a damn nice bonus.

"But the government keeps changing the specs" Which is covered under any contract out there. 'Change orders' get charged more. All contractors know this and work well with it.
