Have You Ever Called in With a Fake Sickness?

Posted November 22, 2010 1:27 PM

Have you ever taken a "sick and tired" day from work? Called in with an imaginary illness that would incapacitate you until dinnertime? What precipitated that response? Evidence suggests that when you are emotionally of physically drained by professional or personal challenges, a day off can significantly increase your productivity when you return to work. While some companies recognize the value of "mental health" days, others require that you actually call in sick. What is your company's official policy? How does the situation get handled in practice?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Electronic Test Equipment, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Electronic Test Equipment today.

Certainly I have, hasn't everyone?

At my work place,

Officially - must use vacation day - up to twice a year for 'emergency sickness'.

Unofficially - Boss gives 'comp time' for working over time and weekends. As long as I answer phone and generally be available for information requests, all is good.

"Certainly I have, hasn't everyone?"

Well, actually, No. I'm a few months shy of my 70th birthday, and haven't done this - not so far, anyway. Guess if I'm going to, I need to make it happen soon, before I retire!

Blimey, congratulations, you've found a boss who uses common sense and initiative to get the best out of the workers.

This "ethical" dilemma doesn't exist where I work. We can charge a day off to vacation, sick, personal use, or no pay.

Now, when I worked for the Feds...

I found my name in the obituary column one day. I clipped the notice and brought it to HR and said I wanted my 3 bereavement days. What a tough bunch! They turned me down.

No. It was just somebody with the same name. The life insurance folks weren't too impressed, either!

Not fake. But truly exhausted. So that may not qualify for an "official" sickness.

I've learned over the years, if I don't feel up to it I don't go in to work.
I once bravely soldiered on with a nasty cold to test an 'urgent job'.
Of course the job didn't get shipped anyway and I ended up needing 3 weeks off.
There is a whole load of people who think only their 'urgent' matters, but they don't don't know their ar$s from their elbow.

I used to apply the 'golf test' if I felt I'd turn down a game of golf 'cos I didn't feel right, then I wasn't fit for work.

In my case it is only the bosses 'urgent' that matters.

I get moaned at for not taking enough time off.

I can remember my days working for Marconi where they had a strong trades union, the rep would come round to check that you had taken all of your sickness days for the year.

Does calling in for one day arrested count, or, my roof/ceiling just caved in on top of me? lol (not at all funny at the time)

I have never taken a fake sick day in my work life, but I took plenty of them in school. Right to the limits in fact.

And, not to get out of anything other than the act of going.

I have not taken more than a total of a dozen real sick days in 35 yrs., including the 5 in a row once with the flu/pneumonia that I should have been in the hospital for.

I schedule and use time off for appointments, etc., but try to do those after or before working hours or 'comp' the time some other way.

I have more saved time off than anyone else at my firm, including the owner who accrues at an only dreamed of rate since he sets the rules to begin with.

Re: Have You Ever Called in With a Fake Sickness?

Excellent problem.

Sickness can be a real physical phenomenon and one must consult a doctor. High blood pressure often makes one very dull, lazy and sleepy in day time until one eats good amount of food to feel better. Either good sleep or food makes blood pressure normal and this can also be done using medicine to keep fit. One has to realize the reason and quickly adopt a right solution.

If one does frisk morning walk of few km and some breathing excursuses, then body has more Oxygen filled blood through entire body and it clears many such sicknesses and increases power of the brain to function.

Lazy sickness can come anytime after age of 30 and much earlier for fatty man and woman. Burn your fat and keep blood circulation high in the early morning to feel great entire day at work.

Depression can come to anyone in a phase change manner so take it easy as it is not going to be permanent and good time is just next to it. I think this is what you are talking about here. However, such sickness passes away with time or by meeting your best friend or by doing something you think is best for you you or simply telling others and getting a friendly verbal support. If nothing works then one has to find ways to get rid of the problem but must not worry about it as this happens to all human being to some extent. You never feel great all the time and it is very natural thing to happen. Once you realize this bio-activity of your own body, then you can laugh at it and then you can take it easy.

I will still say that one should consult a doctor if this is happening very often and for very long. Anxiety, insecurity based stress do not disappear very quickly. These things come fast and go very slow and need some backing from others. Watch out your thought process and what is going on in your own mind. Both problems and solutions may reside there.

Years ago I worked for an engineering company. One of my coworkers was a practical joker. He suggested to my other coworkers that we try to convince "Joe" that he was sick and to see if we convince him to go home.

Everybody asked "Joe" if he felt OK. Everybody told him that he looked terrible. Little by little we convinced him that he was sick. He gradually admitted that he didn't feel well. By noon he had gone home due to illness!
