Honda recently announced a recall of 97,201, 2009-10 Honda
Fit hatchbacks due to potential part failure issues. The parts in question are
the spring assemblies on the engine's variable valve timing and life electronic
control (VTEC) system.
In a press release, Honda said that "lost motion springs"
within the valve train "may bend or break over time resulting in abnormal
engine noise and potentially causing engine damage or stalling." The automotive
company has attributed the issue to a lack of lubrication where the spring in
question contacts the rocker arm.
The company was first notified of the part failure in 2008,
but in 2009 decided that the occurrences were too few in number to warrant any
action. After changing the spring's specification in November 2009, Honda
continued to monitor the situation. In June 2010, they began to notice an
increase in the number of claims for "vehicles one year old or older" and
decided to reconsider their previous stance.
Do you know anyone who has experienced issues with their
Honda Fit?
