Does iPhone Location-tracking Bother You?

Posted May 17, 2011 9:19 AM

Apple says the data file on the iPhone merely logs nearby cellular base stations, and no personally-identifiable information is collected or transmitted to Apple. If you own one of these devices, do you consider this logging an invasion of your privacy? Are the concerns expressed by some overblown, in your opinion? Are you more interested in using the data yourself, to see where you've been?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Data Acquisition, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Data Acquisition today.

I could care less - don't have and will never again own anything associated with Steve Jobs. My last Apple I discarded in about 1992.

The tracking - no big deal in general.

Whoever that has a mobile phone or iDEN radio turned on and connected to the network can be located by whoever that has access to BS data.

That is why I do not care about Apple.

Easy solution - don't use a cell phone.

I don't. But that shouldn't have to be the solution.

It makes me wonder what actually constitutes an invasion of privacy. Wouldn't it be at the point that the information were used in a way that was to my detriment? Wouldn't it also be that the information were acquired illegally.

It is not illegal to follow someone and watch them if you don't make contact or give them reason to believe you are threatening their well being. So someone can legally acquire information about where I am by simply following me around. Creepy as it may be, PI's do it all the time and there isn't much you can do about it, it doesn't even meet the definition of stalking.

However, were I to be doing something, let's say, something "wrong", then it seems that it would be logically incumbent upon me to make the extra effort to occlude access to information that were detrimental to the unencumbered carrying out of my nefarious purpose and I would assume that my cellphone were an automatic tail. I knew this even back in the analog days.

This is just one of the 'hot buttons' that gets people all excited.

The excitement is not reasonable or logical to me - same as getting wound up about security checks at the airport.

I think you are correct - most don't care so the one that gets excited about 'invasion of privacy' is the one that needs to take steps to protect the illusion of privacy.

After some nights out I could use a phone which told me where I had been.

True, maybe I need a device that deletes all of the records.
