Online Tracking: Federal Regulation Needed?

Posted April 25, 2011 9:09 AM

The Federal Trade Commission is considering some sort of way to let consumers opt out of being tracked while they're surfing the Web. The idea would be something like the Do Not Call registry that telemarketers are supposed to abide by, but would address online tracking and data collection. Good idea or needless regulation? Is the idea of a Do Not Track registry a good one? Or is industry self-regulation a better way to go?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Data Acquisition, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Data Acquisition today.

If we try to talk about industry self-regulation, who in the industry has a stake in keeping my information private? You can argue that some will because they have an interest in not being regulated.

I think foxes should be assigned to ("self")-regulate chicken farms. (Just in case, be advised that that's satire / sarcasm.)

I believe the Fed's are actively looking for ways to control the internet. This tactic, as well as net neutrality and others are being used to get their foot in the door.

Internet tracking by companies can be held at bay by disabling/deleting cookies. Once the Fed's are in the business of controlling the internet, they will never go away, and they will continue to give themselves more control until it no longer resembles the internet that we use today.

The internet is yet another aspect of our lives that the government needs to stay the hell out of.

Monitor the internet for criminal or terrorist activity.................absolutely. That's where it needs to end.
