CR4 Has a New Look!

Posted February 20, 2013 3:00 PM by SavvyExacta

During your next log-in to CR4 you may notice that things look a little different. CR4 has a new color scheme! Not to worry, though, the changes are only cosmetic. CR4's functionality remains the same.

GlobalSpec and CR4 became a part of IHS in July 2012. One part of integrating CR4 into IHS involved creating a consistent look and feel between the sites. CR4's logo and color schemes were red from day one. IHS uses the color blue and so CR4 is hopping on board with a new blue color scheme and logo.

The merchandise in the CR4 Store is still available with the old logo. If you're partial to the red bubble letters I'd recommend picking up your favorite items while they are still available. New merchandise will debut soon - watch for another announcement!

Other recent things that might interest you:

  • Electronics360 is a new IHS GlobalSpec site that provides electronics industry news and editorial.
  • New section - Aerospace! (Plus, Automotive was expanded to include all of Transportation.)
  • A new blog, the IHS ESDU Blog, launched last week. The goal of this blog is to discuss topics of interest to engineers and technical personnel involved in developing new products and solving design/engineering problems.
  • Notes & Lines is another fairly recent blog that you may want to check out if you're interested in the intersection between science and the arts.

Note - the new color scheme should be live sometime on the evening of February 20. If it doesn't load correctly, try refreshing your browser and maybe clearing your cache/cookies.

I cannot offer a coupon code for our products on Zazzle, but Zazzle itself has some promo codes you can use.

"CR4 has a new color scheme! Not to worry, though, the changes are only cosmetic. CR4's functionality remains the same."

SO what you are saying is you changed the part number and packaging box but never fixed the actual quirks and bugs in the product and are now proud to introduce it as new and improved just the same?

Whats next? Raise the price from $19.99 to $29.99 then try and tell us its worth $49.99 and that we are getting a great deal on the revamped item too?

(Yea I have sat in on one or two marketing meetings in my life.)

Re: CR4 Has a New Look!

I was going to tidy my mailbox, but didn't get around to it. Just logged on and saw the 'new look'. Fist impression was not good. My mailbox seemed to load faster, and my initial revulsion has mellowed. My first impression is that functionality has improved. New servers or something ?

It will take me a few days to get used to the new look, so I'll try and hold any negative comment. I'm nearly 6 years old (honest !), and the change from red to blue is rather hard. Some of the clutter seems to have gone (hurrah).

ps- I am still waiting for the 'sandpit forum' within which the daft weekend posts and fringe science can go. iHS seem to want a more 'serious' structure, fair enough, but everyday engineers/scientists/whoever like a spot of fun along with the serious stuff. Creating a playpen area might solve a number of issues (?).

Second login to get an impression of the new look. Can we have a slightly bigger font for the bit on top right hand side (member/login) ? Some of us old duffers don't have eyesight as sharp as we used to !

No new server, and I know that someone was working on the mailbox, but I'm not sure whether or not that change has been released.

The idea of a miscellaneous type forum is on the list for a time when we get an opportunity to do more work on CR4. This update was mostly about changing the header.

To those who don't like it, I say scroll down a couple of inches. Problem solved.

Ta for the info.

The new look is growing on me - it seems less cluttered, and the blue is nicely soothing. The slightly Stalinesque red stars still scare me a bit. Changing them to Gold wouldn't be too hard a tweak, and whilst still being readily noticeable would fit quite nicely with the new decor.

Next time I do something naughty, do I get time off for being constructive and complimentary a creep ?

I am sulking - I used the word 'soothing', then went over to one of the other chats on all this only to find you had used that exact word. I may just go find my DVD of Equillibrium/Gattica so I feel less creeped out.

Crabs is not good. Bit sixties, but I'm being well behaved whilst everyone gets used to the new CR4 look. Was it like Batman falling into a cave full of bats, or one of those youthful liasons one regrets later ?

Sorry, Mizuti, it's all a bit too tempting not to rip on. Bad day at the ranch over here, and you just happened to provide first opportunity for me to be silly with.

You could always go to town and do the same as other sites such as Majorgeeks; The Admins have hilarious names such as 'Major Attitude'. On second thoughts, it might not be good - things could descend into nominations. The kabourophobic* Mizuti could be in for a hard ride**. Being born, myself, in such an astrolgical way, I'm deeply hurt by such bias. Luckily I am 'on the cusp' (and not saying which way). I'll get over it, Spongebob Squarepants still loves me.

The shape of the admin badge is sort of OK, but at a first glance (for any passer by) it looks alarmingly 'commie', not that I could care less about political stuff. A number of people (deary me, I forget who) don't like animated avatars and stuff, but a crab pinching it's pincers would be most excellent marker for an admin or moderator. Conveys meaning with a little humour.

*I'm feeling very pleased with myself for finding a new word.

** I'm just teasing the cat with tie.

By just refreshing the page a handful of times in quick secession, I was able to get the new layout to show up properly. If it doesn't for you (and you tried clearing your cookies), let us know the details and we can look into it s'more

People that walk like crabs deserve whatever fate they walk into:

"Have you ever watched a crab on the shore crawling backward in search of the Atlantic Ocean, and missing? That's the way the mind of man operates." - H. L. Mencken

"The crab that walks too far falls into the pot" - Haitian proverb

"You cannot teach a crab to walk straight." - Aristophanes

Forwards and backwards are alright, but we don't cater to crab-like shenanigans.

Seems to be a running theme with IE 8 users, I'll let our overseers know

(also, quick screen cap is "PrtScn" => Paste into Paint => Save and upload here)

Instead of refreshing several times, you can use ctrl F5 to do a hard refresh-- it refreshes the page without looking at cached info.

(But if you're using IE 8 in compatibility mode, you're up a creek w/out a paddle right now-- it's definitely messed up there!)

Certainly seems that way. We've got "top men" looking into the problem.

I may be in the minority, but my philosophy has always been: "If it ain't broken, don't fix it". Some may see an improvement, others may see it as less or even a backwards slide in convenience. It appears to me to be someone (government or other) thinking "I'm doing this for your own good, because you don't know and we do". I don't object when someone asks for a change and it has been accomodated, but changes out of the blue do not make me happy. I admit, this forum has been pretty good. It's really the people who change the web browsers that upset me. I don't like having to re-educate myself every time a new change is invoked before I can get on with my business.

Just to add to the fun, here is what "compatible" mode with IE8 does to the subscription listing. Notice the thin blue line through "search GlobalSpec" and the text misalignment.

Regarding what is going on with the alignment issue, hit control-a to select and hilite all. There is quite a bit of white on white text that will reveal when hilited. This trick seems to work all over the site.

It's sort of interesting to watch how things are changing here at CR4.

It's sad that IE8 users are having such a rough go at this, but at the same time, this is just a little bit hilarious looking. Save that picture for the vault o' memories

IE users have a rough go at everything these days... IE 8 doesn't even support HTML5 so they can expect more and more websites that don't work properly down the road.

The new design of CR4 appears very "Continental" to me, like:

not bad... but it has lost it´s "American" essence:

Changing the "updated discussions" etc. back to red on yellow wasa good move.

I seem to have problems with the edit box in mobile

firefox - will investigate & amplify.

Chrome also seems to be making a badjobofit - delete previous char seems to delete next instead!!!!

Hmmm ... "updated discussions" red on yellow FF/Android ICS, dark blue on yellow FF/Win7. This used to be consistently red on yellow on every browser/OS/machine I've used. WTF?

Puzzled of Reading.

Erk! It's changed in the last hour!!! Just refreshed CR4 on my mobile, now dark blue/yellow (FF/ICS). Izzit going to change randomly, according to the time of day or the weather or what?

Dazed and confused of Reading.

Now black/yellow. If the yellow were a bit brighter, it could be taken as a hazard warning .

A few things are being tweaked to improve readability. I think we're staying with black and yellow for the time being! Don't worry, the links still do the same things. :)

Looks dirty...Ididn't hate the blue and yellow. Wouldn't it just be easier to make look like a normal link, I do like the way it shows numbers of messages and discussions.

Re: CR4 Has a New Look!

Here's a new wrinkle. Since the white on grey change that happened earlier, I switched to Chrome being my default browser and have made all of my comments using Chrome. In the thread "Is this support adequate" I methodically made sure that my reply #28 I used the editor's upper case command to make sure my area units were in square feet, with an upper case numeral 2 to indicate. Now Chrome, IE8 and IE9 display my reply as feet2.

Displaying equations and unit structure properly is critical in engineering.

Hard to tell with the poor resolution that uploaded images have here.

Just for kicks, could you try pressing "Ctrl + 0"

As in, ctrl then zero?

I going to try something.

yep its looks clear on my tube now, but the picture in the post shows it blurry.

PS, I withdrawl that last thanks, as I page within CR4, the resolution changes, and I have to hit 'ctrl 0' to get it back again.

Curious, are you using a scroll wheel perhaps? It almost sounds to me like your "ctrl" button is stuck, and as you scroll, the resolution decreases.

Other than that, I haven't the foggiest idea of what's going on over on your side. All that "ctrl 0" does is bring you back to the "standard" resolution of a given website after it's been altered (either through the scroll wheel and ctrl or +/- and ctrl. Hmm.. maybe someone else can help? Or better yet, is anyone else having this problem?
