Top 10 Impressive Bridges

Posted October 03, 2013 12:00 AM by CR4 Guest Author

Bridges easily take us to places that may otherwise be unreachable. Or, at least, difficult to reach! How many of these big bridges have you visited? Which bridge would top your own list of the most impressive bridges in the world?

  1. Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge, Japan - Also known as the Pearl Bridge, the Akashi-Kaikyo bridge is suspended over the Akashi Strait. The length of its center span is 6,532 ft (1,991 m), making it known as the longest suspension bridge in the world.
  2. Tsing Ma Bridge, China - The Tsing Ma Bridge is a double-decker bridge that carries both road and railway traffic. The upper deck is a dual, three-lane carriageway and the lower deck contains two railway tracks and a two-lane emergency road. The main span of the Tsing Ma Bridge is 4,518 ft (1,377 m) and is known as the longest bridge carrying railway traffic.
  3. Golden Gate Bridge, United States - When completed in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge was the largest suspension bridge in the world. Since then, it has been surpassed in size but remains a symbol of San Francisco and the United States. The length of the longest span is 4,200 ft (1,280 m).
  4. The Faith Sultan Bridge, Turkey - Also known as the Second Bosporus Bridge, the Faith Sultan Bridge reaches across the Bosphorus Strait. The Faith Sultan is a suspension bridge with a span that measures 3,576 ft (1,090 m) and is part of the Trans European Motorway that connects Edirne and Ankara.
  5. Ponte 25 de Abril Bridge, Portugal - The Ponte 25 de Abril Bridge is a suspension bridge with a total length of 2,277.64 m (longest span of 1,013 m). This bridge crosses the Tagus River and connects the capital city of Libson to Almada.
  6. Forth Road Bridge, United Kingdom - Built in 1964, the Forth Road Bridge is located in east central Scotland and was constructed to replace a ferry service. This toll bridge's longest span measures 3,298 ft (1,006 m) and carries motor vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians.
  7. Lions' Gate Bridge, Canada - The Lions's Gate Bridge is also known as the First Narrows Bridge. This bridge connects the city of Vancouver to the municipalities on the other side. The Lions's Gate, named after the mountain peaks of north Vancouver, has a span of 1,550 ft (472 m) and carries three reversible lanes of traffic.
  8. Ambassador Bridge, United States/Canada - The Ambassador Bridge is a privately owned bridge that connects Detroit, Michigan (USA) and Windsor, Ontario (Canada). When completed in 1929, it was reported to have the largest span in the world-measured to be 1,850 ft (564 m). The Ambassador Bridge is said to be the busiest international border crossing in North America in trade volume.
  9. Little Belt Bridge, Denmark - The Little Belt Bridge is 1,969 ft (600 m) spanning bridge crosses the Little Belt Strait. This three-lane carriageway was built to connect Jutland and the island of Funen while relieving congestion on the Old Little Belt Bridge.
  10. Hercilio Luz Bridge, Brazil - Although the Hercilio Luz Bridge has been closed since 1991, it connects the island of Florianópolis and the Brazilian mainland. It's be said that the Hercilio Luz Bridge is the oldest hanging bridge in the world, with a span of 1,115 ft (340 m).

*Span means the distance between the suspension towers, that is what is referred to in these descriptions.

I've forgotten, but is that one a Santiago Calatrava?

Too bad there was only one pic in the OP; the whole idea of this thread depends on visualization.

There was also once a gorgeous design for a cable-stayed bridge in which the roadway curved and the cables went to the sides as well as upward. I don't know if it ever got built, but the Feather River in California would be an excellent prospective location.

3? Check. 4? Check. 6? Check.

Here are some more. Let's see if some railway bridges can whet the appetite: how about the Forth Rail Bridge, the Royal Albert Bridge, Maidenhead Viaduct and Chappel Viaduct?

Maybe not in the top 10, but the Charleston, SC bridge over the Cooper river is pretty impressive...especially for people that used to have to drive over the old one.

That's a nice one. The Tri-Cities (Kennewick, Pasco, Richland) in Washington have a similar one, but maybe a bit smaller.

The old one, going into Charleston, was a narrow, potholed, two lane mess. Two lanes of one way traffic, with enough space to allow about 3" between cars. Just about had to hold your breath while driving over it.

Nice pic's

These are not impressive in the respect but the opposite.. but imo still interesting

This happen basically overnight last week on Interstate I43 over the Leo Frigo Bridge (aka Tower Drive) in Green Bay, Wisconsin US. Where a pier dropped 22"

DOT is investigating, and may have something later this week or beginning next week.

Had some more info on another thread that was tongue in cheek. #20 sorry for the diversion

Maybe it's the perspective of the photo, but it sure looks like that concrete bent a lot without cracking or crumbling.

Yes. They found the the steel piers rusted through about 10 feet under the surface and buckled and indications other piers have sever corrosion also. The piers go 90-100 feet below the surface. I Should have started a sepRate thread.

Some of the really old bridges that pioneered new technology deserve a mention. The Iron Bridge at Telford, England comes to mind. Made of cast iron. Completed in 1779 and still in use.

Official Bridge Day website!

Coming up, October 19th.

We usually have a contingent of motorcycle riders from my company that attend. And it's usually an awesome ride from here in Bridgewater, VA.

But the mountain roads traveled are best reserved for the other thread!!

Call me prejudiced, since I'm a Virginian but it's hard not to include the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, 17.6 miles shore to shore.

Key West bridges - a whole series of them from tip of Florida to Key West, via multiple islands. Extremely impressive and surely, massively costly:

Two very different bridges I've been across, one built in 1895, the other in the 1980s:

Silver Bridge in Youngstown, OH, an iron suspension bridge:

The Sunshine Skyway, near St. Petersburg, FL, at the entrance to Tampa Bay, a cable-stayed suspension bridge:

Here's a strange one for you:

Sonning Bridge in Berkshire, England is not especially famous, but is very old. Something strange happened recently and no-one has explained it. Even Uri Geller, who lives there, is baffled.

'Even' Uri Geller? The charlatan, who was debunked as doing common parlor-trick magic by The Amazing Randi, is baffled? I guess whatever 'happened' at the bridge must not have involved bent teaspoons.

The bridge with the Royal Mail Postbox has been in the national newspapers and the BBC recently. So far as I know no-one has owned up to the prank. Maybe it's a genuine mailbox for a Troll that lives under the bridge. No bent teaspoons are thought to be involved.

Its simply a sail past mailbox. Wait until 5 pm and the post boat will come and collect the sailors mail.
