IPv6: Needed and Necessary

Posted February 24, 2008 7:47 AM

The U.S. government has been one of IPv6's biggest backers, mandating that federal agencies be IPv6-compliant by June of this year. Recent articles argue that most companies needn't rush to convert to IPv6. The shortage of IPv4 addresses isn't a problem for most, as long as they use network address translation (NAT) — and most are. NAT shields company-internal IP addresses from the Internet, and allows companies to use any Class A address space they desire, behind a NAT firewall. What's your position on IPv6? Are you deploying as soon as possible, or asking "what's the rush?"

I cannot see the lemming-like rush to convert from the present IPv4 to IPv6 is really needed.

Sure if every computer in the world had its own individual connection to the Internet.

But as the article points out, most computers are installed in businesses, colleges etc, which have all Internet traffic pass through a single Internet Server.

This is for a higher Security level, access control, and relies on NAT for the automatic traffic switching.

So as for me, I'm not intending to upgrade to IPv6 anytime soon.

Kind Regards....
