What Can a Pump Engineer Do?

Posted January 16, 2009 8:08 AM

Water shortages are in the news these days. Experts predict dire shortages of water in the future. What can we, as pump engineers, do about it? How will desalination, water banking, fewer pipeline leaks, and conservation methods help?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Pump Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Pump Technology today.

We should save water as large amount is just wasted. We should recycle the water and conserve it. Also we should try to reduce evaporation of the water from lakes. Best thing will be to harvest water in big cities by creating under ground storage.

Water that evaporates comes back in precipitation, primarily rain.... The more water storage, the less rain. This may be huge in causing droughts and climate change. Please re-think this opinion and share the knowledge.

Experts predict localized shortages - no?

There is lots of water, just in the wrong places?

Seems like a natural for pumping engineers, get with the civil engineers and figure out how to get the flood waters of the Mississippi over the Rockies to the southwest using nothing but solar powered pumps.

First refill the aquifers in the mid-west on the way by.

Desalinization is a very expensive process, from an energy and maintenance perspective. I promote a system based on rainwater capture; storing untreated water for extended periods creates other problems, such as algae growth and mosquito breeding. I generally recommend that large cisterns be fitted with recirculation systems that include an ozone treatment. Keep the water moving and aerated (think of ozone as supercharged oxygen, the bane of anaerobic life forms, which is what stagnates water). The local pump suppliers love my approach...

drill a horinzontal pipe into missisippi or other fresh water source, and pipe it to the final demand are.

everything undergroud.

set a pump station at the source and maybe a few in between.

a small diameter pipe would do the job just fine...just keep the pumps running 24/7.

A pump engineer can only do what he is commissioned to do and cannot do much about water shortages except for avoiding leaks (must in any case be done) ensure the highest efficiency to minimize water use in power generation.

A water balance need to be performed for a resource system and shortages must be met or demand reduced.

Some parts of the world may have enough water but in arid parts the possibility of shortages will exist.

In SA we have build a dam in the neighbouring water rich country. tunneled over to our catchment and is buying water big time. But even that supply will eventually be insufficient. We therefore are and must increase guard against wasting.

looking for background data.. this seems to be a great source. there are numerous maps of rainfall, draining, elevation, temperature...etc.
