More On Mars or Move On?

Posted April 06, 2009 8:21 AM

Motion control and robotics were big gainers in the five years since Spirit and Opportunity rovers began making discoveries on the red planet. But, even if the Obama space plans move forward and bigger NASA spending can be protected in this harsh economic environment, the "What's Next?" question may be halting. Should more money go to continuing Mars projects, or find its way to explorations on the moon, or other parts of the solar system?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Motion Control Components, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Motion Control Components today.

The idea of mining operations on the Moon or the Asteroids would be better from a cash flow point of view than persuing human colonies of dubious financial value on Mars. The cost of returning materials from the asteroids might be lower than getting out of the moon's gravity well. In the end making money is what will be driving not romantic BS.
