What Is It?? Some Kind of Nozzle...?

12/15/2015 2:48 PM

I found this on our receptionist's desk a couple months ago. We are a manufacturing facility (machine shop) and have had various vendors in and out working on all utilities. This nozzle looks important, but no one here owns it, and nobody knows what it is.Overall length is 2-1/8". The small hole running through the "nozzle" is 3/16" dia. The knurled end in internally threaded with a 9/16" thread inside it. It's steel. It's a heavy precision machined piece.
If not a nozzle... possibly some kind of collet? Maybe a part of a pneumatic tool? Part of a hand tool? Any ideas?

I guess you would know if it were for coolant delivery?

It also looks like it would work well for blowing up animal balloons. Did you work with any clowns?

Do I work with any clowns? Every day. But none of them have painted faces or rubber noses.

Coolant delivery... hmm...

The HVAC guy was in here, in that area, that day. How exactly might it have been used for coolant delivery?

Yes it looks like part of a manifold the HVAC guy uses when he hooks up to your system, but do not ask me which part, just vaguely familiar. Oops, I failed to read all the posts before weighing in with my drivel.

JHowdy is the first one to get it right, Kudos.

Ohhh... coolant delivery. Sorry, that didn't register. Long day.

Hm... I think we use plastic nozzles, but it is a possibility. I'll have to check that when I go back in tomorrow. It might be a coolant nozzle.

This item is clearly knurled, but the tool that does it looks quite different.

The knurling does suggest that this object is often manually operated (e.g., attach, detach, adjust). Maybe some kind of quick-disconnect, or part of a valve?

I can't tell if it's for a tapered thread, as it's only about 2 1/2 turns of thread.

Given the short thread inside, and the heavy knurling outside, it does suggest, as Tornado pointed out, that it is often manually adjusted or quickly removed.

I'll take pic of inside the knurled end later this morning.

Does the hole go all the way through? Looks like a muffler for air or gas discharge, unless the hole goes all the way through in which case maybe a silencer but there are only a few calibers that small.

For all of those who may think the response was in jest, the information given in the original post stated "found on receptionist's desk", not given or brought in by the receptionist so it's entirely possible that it IS the receptionist's.

The black oxide finish, and the heaviness of it reminds me of machining clamps and clamping hardware. I believe it's hardened. No it's not a tire valve, nor valve remover. The 3/16" dia hole goes all the way thru. Not a knurling tool. I'm pretty sure it's either for air or water consistency fluid.

That is just a knurled bit for removing material from a work piece be it wood, steel, plastic etc.

They are normally used in air powered tools:

No. Rotary files are never hollow and are never have internal threads.

Using the "wrong sized nut" to remove threads DOES NOT make it a rotary file any more than something with knurled sections makes it a rotary file.

Knurling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Knurling allows hands or fingers to get a better grip on the knurled object than would be provided by the originally smooth metal surface."
