A Question on Dialect and Accent

02/08/2016 12:25 PM

I watch quite a bit of video from Youtube to courses I audit online. without intentionally offending anyone I have to admit several accents can perturb me to the point I just close the window and move on.

I've been told enough times in the past that at times my Orange County "Beach accent" is obvious to many non-Californians."whats up with that dude?"

I find it almost painful to hear instruction from a Brit accent regardless of the topic. I have to assume plenty of British folks cringe watching American TV or film or have live conversation with tourists. I'm not sure if it's annunciation or cadence but it is odd to think hearing the language I speak spoken in what seems such a different way to me should phase me.

anyone else experience similar experiences?

This may be OT, but it is to me a very funny piece of word play. I laugh every time I watch it.

Given that we are entering the W 10 abyss it has new meaning.

To an old guy like me who can barely "boot" his computer it is masterful.

It could be this

Re: A Question on Dialect and Accent

I have a very big problem understanding English as spoken by people from India. It is so common these days for American companies who have service departments, contract out their service calls to India. They speak quickly and run the words together. It can be very frustrating tying to understand what is being said over the phone. I have to keep asking them to repeat; and then I get frustrated and hang up. Another language I have a problem with is what is spoken by members of the "hood", if you know what I mean. Certain British dialects are a problem. I can understand when David Cameron speaks, but sometimes other MP's are hard to understand. Aussie language can be hard, but their language is full of distinct ideoms, like "good die" and "barbie". I do love the names the Brits use for common American terms, like "way out" for exit, "lorrie" for truck and "straight-a-way" for right now, etc. I enjoy watching Downton Abbey for the way they speak. Scotch, Irish and Welsh can be hard to understand.

Sounds like you might enjoy my earlier rant on that topic, (if you haven't read it already):

In the movie "Go For Broke" the Japanese-American soldiers would imitate their commander's Texas drawl.
