CR4 Face to Face Meet

09/09/2016 4:37 AM

At least in USA does CR4 organize a face to face get together/ fellowship meeting of active members of CR4 where people see/ discuss face to face- with pseudo names/ masks off?? These kind meetings may help to improve quality of interaction and discussion on website.

With usernames removed, it increases the risk of liability with the potential to embroil the owners of CR4 is a mess.

So, as far as this username is concerned, the invitation is declined.

When people meet face to face- you cannot use pseudo names!!! I meant only during face to face, fellowship meetings - if any of CR4 participants- not removing user names when responding to blogs / discussions.

I didn't know Ossie was part of the CR4 community? What section does he specialize in, "Chemical Science"? There isn't a "Heavy Metal" section per se

It's a cool idea, but where in the World would this (these) take place?

Seems like India has a large following IAW the amount of questions being generate from there. But, I know I don't have that kinda time to make the trip there.

Please see the humor in this: Several CR4 members have admitted to being tempted to "choke the living SH**" out of certain posters, (not you, and not me that I am aware of).

Why tempt the tempted? LOL.

I suppose instead of a meet and greet, we could have a paintball gun free-for-all, but with the restriction there is to be no surreptitious engineering of said paintball gun before the match. I suspect Lyn would convert his to a Hispano 20 mm paintball gun.

I'm partial to the Planet Eclipse GTEK 160R for light work.

(Our 17 YO's team won the national paintball championships in Las Vegas this year and he used one.)

My personal preference is a Bofors 40mm.

Bofors 40 mm is nice, makes a loud bang, and has some serious wallop! 20 mm Hispano has far less droop in the trajectory for similar range, though. I don't recall too many planes having the 40 mm cannon in WWII, most Germans went up as high 30 mm, especially on the "Butcher Birds" , Fw-190 A series, and 110 destroyers.

Hurricane (some) had 40 mm cannon, but the amount of ammo loaded was dismally low, and accuracy suffered. Americans used the 37 mm gun on some of the P-39 Aero Cobras in the Pacific, I think, although the Russians flew more of them.

Its Jimmy Albertson and Larry Hoffa that's buried in my backyard.

I know you probably never heard of them but that just goes to show what kind of work I do. just be glad you don't know them.

We all know that they won't get rid of the AP function. I think it's their own way of trolling us.

Without it it would put everyone here on a dead level playing field of having to both think about what they're posting and also put a member name on what they do post.

Identity security has nothing to do with it and we all know it being everyone here has very little trouble deducing who is behind every AP post that gets put out.

Either that or they can't figure out how to turn it off and just won't fess up to it.

Aside from the asinine questions from lazy first time posters, being able to say anything you please without retribution or any historical record of ever having been a jerk, is a magnet for abuse.

I have been told that even AP's have to register and also told that in certain instances it insulates a member from their employer when seeking employment or whistle blowing.

I feel that this forum is anonymous enough to shield employees by virtue of the fact that your name can be as simple as a random number.

I've made a fool of myself many times here, but I stand behind every statement I've ever made by always using my name, and so should everyone else who posts here.

If you post, use your member name!

"I have been told that even AP's have to register and also told that in certain instances it insulates a member from their employer when seeking employment or whistle blowing."

I've found that excuse to be extremely weak to the point of being lame. We don't have a huge member base nor are we anywhere near big and popular enough to ever warrant any employer searching our threads to see if their members are rating them out.

Active member wise in the US we have maybe 1 - 2 people per state that would qualify as semi regular members here so who exactly is or could be a threat to any employer anywhere? 10 posts on Facebook or Twitter could do more damage in a day than a lifetime of complaining would ever do here.

"I've made a fool of myself many times here, but I stand behind every statement I've ever made by always using my name, and so should everyone else who posts here."

Same here and that's what I think most members feel as well. Its not about the good guys having a way hide from bad employers, it's just a convenient for petty goons to lash out without repercussion.

It shields the wrong people for the wrong reasons and any decent site admin crew should be be able pick that out and recognize it in a second. (Unless Of course it's also their tool for anonymously trolling people too.)

The reasons you describe in paragraph 1 may not be all that common, but they are perfectly valid, and neither you nor Lyn has reason to disparage them.

That said, I have never had to resort to those reasons. My principal (infrequent) use of anonymity is to set up a humorous retort to something I have already said, without appearing to be talking to myself.

A recent offender in this thread has had two posts deleted, appropriately. Despite occasional glitches, the moderation here is vastly better than on Amazon discussions, for instance.

Amazon doesn't keep the same statistics as here, so I don't know how many total posts I have made over there. Perhaps half as many as on CR4, over the same period of time.

Not common?

Name 5 valid ones from the whole history of CR4!

In fact I dare ask for a count of every thread where it was truly justified. Will that number even break double digit numbers?

Now for abuses of the function it's rare that it would take more than 1 - 3 threads to reach that number and that's largely the problem that so many have here. Justified uses does not come anywhere close to abuses filed over AP comments.

Heck you even admit yourself to using it for nothing more than to comment on your own self when obviously no one else finds what you said comment worthy. That sounds like basic trolling abuse to me.

As I said before, I never used anonymity for work situations. However, given certain circumstances in my previous workplace, being anonymous might have become absolutely essential. Because of that, I shall always remain completely adamant that confidentiality has its place.

I cannot imagine a situation where an employer could identify a disgruntled employee, here on this forum.

You are implying that the employer and you are both subscribed to the forum, he knows your identity and you know, or suspect this. Do they call you Tornado at work?

If you felt the need to invoke anonymity for fear of retribution then why post in the first place?

Same with a job search.

I am just not convinced of the need.

But, I am only a single voice in the anonymous crowd.

I have had exactly that very situation happen, fortunately not to my detriment. It was in an environment where one could be locally blacklisted: i.e., quit an unfair job and nobody else in town will hire you. Never happened to me, but it did to some I know.

From my personal life long experience most employers couldn't identify a disgruntled employee even if they showed up at work with a machete and ax.

Hell I've been at places where 3/4's of the workforce walked out over a 24 hour period and managment still didn't have clue where the problem at the company lay.

Oh yea they did. Having to come out of their office and try and do the work of those below them was a real kick out the head. Heck just having to actually do their own work they had been passing off to the people below them that were not authorized to do dais work was a real killer alone.

Especially when company ownership showed up and started asking questions about how they managed to screw up their business that bad and not know it was happening.

A few of us got offered our jobs back but we declined. We already knew that the local establishment was sunk beyond recovery. We knew damn well we blew a big enough hole in the bottom of that boat to keep it from ever floating in these waters again.

No. they were not happy. They knew exactly what happened, and what they lost, and why and knew there was no story they could tell that would keep their jobs safe.

Peons with documentation beat management BS and lies every time.

Sorry man, this seems like a pretty dumb ass idea, I don't think you understand the personalities of Engineers. I see nothing good coming from that.

If we meet anywhere, it is going to have to be at North of 60's place in the Artic Circle.

Hopefully the weather will keep things kind of cool.

Fair enough, and glad to hear. Keep up the good work. But this isn't a Star Trek forum, it's an Engineering forum for finding and solving solutions and problems.

There are many other formats to hold hands and smile at each other.

I will pass if you all decide to bring a dish to pass.

I'm in wine country north of San Fransisco. Ya-all can party here. Plenty of hotels and food and beer. Pliny the Elder, Lagunitas, Bear Republic, etc. Spirit Works is walking distance from here...

People are located all over the place which makes face to face difficult in person, have you considered a video conference or Skype (or similar)? At least to ease people in to the idea and possibly moderate or weed out a little of the conflicting personalities for possible future face-to-face meetings and get-togethers.

What would be discussed (not politics I hope)!

International politics is not nearly as stimulating as American Politics. Ours is rife with drama, subterfuge, centrifuge, and just plain fugue. Engineers discussing politics is about as entertaining as politicians discussing engineering, I suspect.

Let's do keep it to one single topic, or area of engineering, besides there are already so many different conferences in every imagination field of endeavor to attend each year, it is a wonder anyone has time to actually work.

Typical Texan, everything is bigger in Texas, including the scandals!

I will have you know our politicians can keep up with the best of them when it comes to scandals! For example one time down here a high level government worker lied on his curriculum vitae. Yes, it really happened! Another time the former prime minister signed a painting sold at charity indicating she painted it, but get this.......she didn't!!!!!

Yeah, Trumps got nothing on us.

I think Massey overacted, but those who have developed a rapport or some type of relationship will meet if it is convenient for them to do so.

I think that a face to face meeting would be a disaster. Sort of like meeting a blind date. After we've met what do we talk about, really?

I've gone to many trade shows and CES during the 80's/90's and have made no/few lasting friends from them. I met many interesting people when I was involved in active noise cancellation, but even those have faded into faint memories, after I changed fields.

If any members ever came to Phoenix and expressed a desire to meet, I would.

Re: CR4 Face to Face Meet

I got nominated to go to Palm Spring one Aug. to repair one of our aircraft's Nav. systems. The tarmac was over 140° and was stuck there in that recycled Coors can for 3 days chasing two crossed wires that avionics repaired the night before. 32oz cups of ice turned to warm piss-water in 15 minutes and that was with 3 AC units running- 2 on-board the "can" and one ground support unit with all the air diverted to the cockpit .

That my friend was like living in Hell! I didn't do that again. (Being an inspector I could pick and choose where and wanted to do on my (supposedly) days off.)

And, yes I did tie into the avionic tech for his shoddy workmanship when got back to the hanger Arrrrr! Nothing better than trying to teach someone how to do a compass swing *flying solo in 120° heat

That's history now

* no other A&P mech or Inspector on site

Dear Mr. xyz,

Idea is good. But plenty of efforts to be taken, and odds are many, like expnditure, venue and arrangements therein, accomodation, movemnt etc.,etc., will be the difficult part.

Let us wait and see what other members express their views.

Defeats the idea of CR4 ? (people with whom to correspond.)

If it's a fight meeting, we could invite some I know of here:

Sorry to say so, but I have the feeling things should stay as they are, cause each of us has a mental "image" of how a real person under a certain alias is or should be ... but this image is what shrinks call "Transference" (defined as a phenomenon characterized by unconscious redirection of feelings from one person to another). So a face to face meeting will certainly be very disappointing for most of the participants, endangering the continuity of CR4.

I prefer to remember Michelle Pfeiffer on screen in 9 1/2 Weeks rather than actually meeting her sitting in the loo after having taken laxatives due to a persistent constipation... am I wrong?

I think you are wrong.

Some longer term members have, I think, developed a kinship that would be a good basis for a brief meeting and casual discussion, just based on banter we've had here.

After a very brief exchange here, member wmerryall and I had a PM discussion involving things which we could discuss at length in a face to face, without much, if any, previous exchanges.

I still feel a group meeting would be mostly a stare fest. (with proper per-meeting lubrication)

Nevertheless, should you decide to meet in Argentina, I will be glad to contribute with 5 or 6 barrels of the excellent beer my youngest son brews.

Damn, we haven't even got to the point of meeting face to face. Forget the taser and paint ball guns, sounds like maybe kevlar jackets and AK's would be appropriate. And, by god, don't claim to be the Anon either, if and when we ever meet!
