The weather where you are NOW!

11/24/2007 5:47 PM

The old British art of starting a conversation, especially with someone you don't know (in a train carriage for example) was always to discuss the weather......in fact, the British people have a lifetime patent on making British weather seem worse than it really is.....they should live here!!! We "talk it bad!" so to say.....

...and as I was searching of a way to bring as many CR4 members together in a general Blog I decided that would be my main topic - YOUR Weather.

It would be great to go off topic as often as possible and NOT to see this as "going off topic!!"....if you get my meaning!!!

No qualifications to join, no previous knowledge, just be yourselves - anything goes!

Please give a city or town as a location, not too far away from where you actually are, of course we cannot check up anyway, it would be nice to be fairly accurate.

Whether you update daily, weekly, monthly of even less seldom, does not matter...just be there occasionally as you see fit please.....

.......just anytime when you feel the URGE!!! And once you have given in to your URGE, then write a few lines here....

I will start with a short synopsis of the weather around Frankfurt Germany:-

Winter is here, we have had several flurries of light snow over the last few weeks, which did not lay, I got the summer tires off the car last week, winter tires on naturally, its been damn cold and it has rained and drizzled several days, but today we had 7°C and bright sunshine, it was really nice to be out. I should have taken my Sunglasses with me!!

Temps this morning were in the 60's Fahrenheit, then a cold front moved thru around noon. Skies were clear and the wind was brisk when I went out for a walk between 2 and 3 this afternoon.

Areas from Colorado to Minnesota to New England have experinced the first major winter storm system of the season. Some places have had power outages due to ice-laden tree limbs breaking off and bringing down electrical lines. A few areas have received a buildup of sleet that looks like snow, but it is actually a slick icy crust. I had such a crust in my yard back in January or February that pretty much kept me homebound for most of 2 weeks. At least I could go out to the street and fetch the morning paper.

I could tell other stories of my brushes with the weather...

Re: The weather where you are NOW!

In Germany, just north of Frankfurt a.M. (as against Frankfurt an der Oder!), we have had temperatures of around 11°C for the last 24 hours, but a storm front with heavy rain squalls accompanied it!! Most rivers are up and very muddy coloured at this time.

I just took my Wife to work this morning at 07:15 and the rain has reduced to small areas of lighter rain....

This is the weather I hate, cold (it has been much colder recently and frosty) and wet....

We have our Silver Wedding anniversary on the 31st December (always a party somewhere!! No, it was difficult to organize the wedding earlier in the year as my wife was in the throes of a difficult pregnancy, every time we booked a date, she spent it in hospital!! Also we got a years Tax back on the 31st...) and we are going to risk the weather and have a week in Dublin to replace the Honeymoon that we never managed to have....

Irish weather near to the Irish Sea!!! We will see.....!!

Good morning Andy.

Here in the West Midlands it is sunny with a few clouds and cold outside 7C, we have been promised more rain and storms for the rest of the week.

Cold, you have to be joking? I married a Norwegian girl in 1966 and stayed in Norway for the next 22 years, I worked outside at a shipyard for 14 of those years, with winter temperatures down to -25c to -30C. Winter then in Norway was always at least 5 months long, now because of global warming it is down to 3 to 4.

Spencer.

Happy anniversary, Andy - it's my birthday, too. And, let's see, I think there's some other kind of holiday associated with it...not boxing day, not Victoria day, um, let me think it over and get back to you...was it Tasmania discovery day? No...it was called Van Maanen's Land or some such back then... Hmmm...

Montreal, Canada:

Woke up to some major snow storm that apparently originated somewhere over Colorado (west US). The storm has dumped some serious snow all over North America. The kids are happy since the schools are all closed but I had to dig myself out of 12 inches of snow (fallen in about 4 hours) and even more once the plow had scraped the streets....and it ain't over yet!

And I did all this so I could come to work and update this site

I remember this situation my self back in the 60s and 70s through into the 80s in Norway. These people who live in more temperate climes do not know the half of it, do thay.

Not a clue...

Actually, Montreal ain't so bad. We get occasional snow storms like the one here, now (2-3 times a year). I grew up north-east of here (Baie-Comeau, about 8 hours by car down the Saint-Laurent river) and I remember the snow blower having problems throwing the snow over the snow bank (accumulated snow in the front yard)!! For those who don't know, a typical residential (yes, most had to own one) snow blower can shoot snow over 20 feet (6 meters) high!

I also remember snow storms where no cars could take on the streets and snowmobiles were the only way to get some groceries (once they managed to open the stores, that is).

Re: The weather where you are NOW!

I heard a funny observation about us Brits last night. When it's hot, we quote the temperature in Fahrenheit. When it's cold we use Centigrade. This helps us to think the figures are much more extreme. Strange but true. If we ever hit -40, the nation would collapse in confusion.

This weekend the weather is bloody horrible. Cold, windy and chucking it down with rain. Puddles all over the place because our drains can't cope.

Mr Truman Brain , please don't take it personal, but, YOU BASTARD ! How do you feel about a house swap some time ? I'll pick the Oranges for you etc - you can have my miserable bloody weather! I had do drill a hole from the outside of my house to the inside today. Can you imagine my joy at cold weather, impending rain storm on my electrical gear etc . Yes, it was truly joyous. And yes, it does relate to my bath thread. When all finished it is yours for a straight swap. Can you imagine me up a ladder, one eye over the shoulder for the next downpour. You'd like the local pubs etc + I'd send you postcards .

You English think you know weather because back in the 50's you got smacked with a storm that drowned a few of you! Weather in the US can be hell! Thousands killed and displaced. We have tornadoes and hurricanes, for Christ-sake!!! And the next year the same thing happens again!!!

Here's weather, oh, I'll give you wearther... Some guy is lining up to drive on the back nine. The sky is clear - not a cloud to be seen. On the backstroke, the schmuck gets hit by lightening from a storm 50 miles away. It's bloody over the horizon!!! Can't be seen by anyone! And that's his end!!!

Hi Vermin.

You don't know what bad weather is really like untill you are hundreds of miles from land caught up in a major storm at sea! With a howling wind of 80mph from port and waves as big has a 4 storey house, then you start to realise you might not get out of this? As a marine engineer for ten years at sea this is what I have experienced 6 times, it is far from funny!!!

On the other hand, today here in the middle of the UK we have glorious sunshine but cold, 4C outside.

Spencer.

Re: The weather where you are NOW!

In my RN service, I went though some big storms in various parts of the world - normal business I would say.

But I never had a single worry about the ship, as we were a trained crew, the storage of all items whether liquid of not was pre-ordained and the ship kept properly balanced by moving fuel or fresh water around.....

I have crossed the pacific with another ship in company maybe 1000 yards away and the waves kept us from seeing each other for more than a few seconds at a time. The other ship was an old 2nd World War Destroyer and some of the crew could not get food for 2 days as they could not get from the accommodation to the galley....they had to cross the upper deck!!!

I have felt sea sick several times, but only been actually sick once (that was more than enough!)....but never once was I every worried about sinking.....

In the far east with Typhoons, the RN always goes to sea in a big one, all other shipping generally goes into port......and a lot got wrecked!!! But not us!!!

I was on a converted Aircraft Carrier that nobody wild take responsibility for more than 12° in a list, so we had to go through any storm, not around it.....the ship was putting the first 150 feet of the flight deck underwater at each wave crest....but i was never worried in the slightest.

I ought to add here that I was typical. In fact I NEVER heard of another shipmate of any age who at any time was worried that the ship was in any danger......and the general record of the RN shows that this trust was not misplaced....it was completely normal....

Huh!! Call that bad weather??? When I was a kid, the rain came down so hard that it bounced up 20ft only to come back down again, so we got twice as wet! and with winds that would blow all the lights out! We lived by a river and every year without fail, a 200m high tsunami would wash all the village away! Never stopped us playing on the polystyrene floats though!

As for the pints Kris, could you send me a sample over first to see if I like the beer?

In the UK, local authorities have to lay on transport if the distance is more than 3 miles. Because of my sons bus route he's asked me to OK it for them to let him off at a nearby spot (a one way traffic system otherwise makes it an additional 20 minutes). It works even though it gives me a few more grey hairs( as I've explained in other threads he's autistic so such stuff is a worry). When I was a kid we lived in middle of nowhere and school transport was provided. My mother, being of Jewish heritage, said "sod that, you and you and your sister are walking - 3 bloody miles along an old disused railway line" .Crap, you wouldn't do that sort of thing these .days. I don't know if I should be pleased or sad. Sign of the times I guess. At present I'm making arrangements for my son to go to post-16 schooling. This involves him taking public transport. Having witnessed how bad the kids can be on the morning bus I'm worried. Luckily I have a lot of local contacts and it will only take one or two people to make the same journey and I can get feedback. Having 'special needs' he'll stick out as a ripe target - it wont happen a second day if anything happens, plans have been made. Life can throw some tough challenges, but none that can't be beat.

Can sympathise to the extent that my 11-going-on-15-yr-old girl is starting to get a lot more independent. Big School after next summer. She's a softy, prone to bullying; also very smart, and into dance, drama etc. (which makes her more of a target).

I expect you've read Mark Haddon : The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time ...

It moved me.

All the best to you and yours.

John

Yes, a great book John ! It's one of those that I re-read on occasion. It doesn't get me inside my own sons head , but does give me time to consider etc. Anybody who hasn't read this one - you're really missing out. Fantastic book. We are clearly on the same space here. Understanding your daughters vulnerability makes you one step ahead of the game. An understanding parent makes all the difference.

I remember walking about 3 miles through the woods and around the lake to get to my school, I was 5 and my sister was 7, never caught a bus, but did graduate to a bike when I started the 'big school'! I really don't know what to think any more about the lack of kindness or consideration for other people! It has got to a stage where something is going snap and anarchy will dominate! What with the bloody politicians fighting all the time over who has the biggest bomb or who owns the oil! The unrest on the street is world wide now, every time you turn on the TV, another bomb blast, another murder, another child abduction, the list goes on!

I can't believe it! Sorry folks, I went down the P road for a moment and lost my composure!

Bishops Tipple eh! Cheers Kris!

I'm going to plant some seeds ! I've seen minature Orange trees grown in this country but don't know if they are edible. They only produce fruit as big as grapes. Mrs Skwirrel wasn't keen on my idea of glazing the roof and turning the heating up to Florida style temperature. Guess I'll have to just look longingly at a minature and sip juice from a carton.

German Joke.

Two German housewives waiting at the bus stop, one says to the other "its a much better summer this year than last!".

"Yes" agreed the other, "the rain is at least 2 degrees warmer!"

Hi Andy.

I loved the joke.

As one seaman to the next, I have been shipwrecked twice, the last time the ship ended up on the rocks at the southern end of Robin Hoods bay north yorshire, it is still there this day 42 years hence. Yes I can relate to the crew and their capability, but with the radar and the magnetic compass gone there is not much one can do but pray to the gods that we survive. As it happens we were lucky, all we had to do was jump ashore in Robin Hoods bay and wait for the dawn.

By the way, we were carrying wood pulp from Norway when it happened, as this was dry you can imagine what happened when this got wet!

Do you ever go and look at the wreck? Can you post us a picture?

Hi Andy.

Yes I have have been back several times, the last time was last year but I have never taken a photo of the wreck, I will though the next time. I have never owned a camera until now, I have always said that I would like my memories in my head, not on film! I also recognise you apreciation of me here on CR4.

But I wish that I was back at sea now, there is nothing like it in the world come shine or storm, I miss the camaraderie of my fellow shipmates. In fact, I always loved the storms, to me it was always man against nature and all it threw at us, don't you agree?

By the way I know quite a bit about Frankfurt am Maine, when I lived in Norway I had first to drive down to Dusseldorf, pick up eqipment and take it to Frankfurt to the power station near there.

I agree entirely about the sea BUT, we were much younger then. Average age on a Guided missile destroyer was 20 - 21 years old, on sweepers 18!!!! We are old Farts now......

Yes we do appreciate you on CR4.....if you were at sea, you could not log in as easily!!!!!

Hi Kris.

I sailed out of Grimsby on deep sea trawlers in the 1960s, not like the British fishermen today, we went out into the Artic Circle north of Norway to catch fish! We would be away for between 4 weeks and 6 weeks.

Of course today we havn't got a decent fishing fleet thanks to Ted bloody Heath.

Too bloody right Spencer. Did you get involved with the 'Cod war' with Iceland ? It got pretty nasty. I'm still not sure about the rights and wrongs of it, but when you get military ships nudging each other it's got to be scary. Don't think I've got the nuts for that stuff.

Silly anecdote : While walking along the local fisherman's beach, I commented how much 'pinchable' gear was about. Bro in law replied " You can bet they know where every single bit of gear is". Those folk know exactly what is where, and justice will be met out swift to anyone who messes with it. No need for police intervention etc. Just straight on " You don't mess with our gear" stuff. The place isn't built where you could hide from such people. Good for them I say. They work damn hard, screwed by all sorts of regulations, and often for little reward. I have total respect for those who earn their living at sea, whether fishing or military.

Hi Kris.

We experience something much more scary than that. During the Cuba crisis we were surrounded by Russian trawlers, we were 5 trawlers fishing in a bunch when they surrounded us one night. Against international law the did not show their running lights, but we knew they were there as they appeared on the radar screen. They stayed there for 4 days and nights, and as we were expecting a nuclear holocaust at the time due to the Cuban crisis, we were shitting ourselves, but we still kept on fishing.

And yes, I was caught up in the cod war with Iceland. That though was not as hairy as the Cuban crisis.

I wonder if all those 'trawlers' were Russian. Some dirty tricks must have been played at the time. I was shitting myself back here in Blighty (though of my age at the time, this was sort of normal ! )

Re: The weather where you are NOW!

It's the end of my workday here, just finished my extra duty as Saint Nick (Toys for Tots toy drive leader - took delivery of today's batch of toys from co-workers), but I wanted to give this morning's weather report. Just as I was about to leave the house, I looked at our atomic clock, which gives time, date, temperature, etc. 10th Dec., 0530 hours, 70 deg. F. Supposed to be the same the rest of the week. Not to make anyone jealous, but I thought to myself, "what is wrong with this picture?" and the only answer I could come up with was, "not a doggone THING!" 8o)

Cheers, y'all

Bluewater should be warm this time of year. A little busy, but McD's have some nice 'bathroom' facilities. I've just got my central heating back on line, and so am laughing like a pig in clover ! All I need now is a working bath, shower, and wash-basin. My electronic weather station is now working but currently resides in Kris-res 2 so I can't quote figures. It's getting colder by the day and I forecast snow this X-mas. Frost on the pavement each morning seems to be happening all the time. I'd like to see snow on my roof so I know my insulation is working.

Skis - bah! You can get mine out here, too, but they're water skis. That, surfing, snorkeling, fishing, those are what I call winter sports. Snow skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, etc., those aren't sports, they're LUNACY! Snow - humbug!

Here, it is 79 degF at noon and partly cloudy, 20% chance of showers this afternoon and tonight. I wasn't born where the winters are decent, but I got here as fast as I could!

Wish you were here, glad I ain't there!

So?

I can't pimp my friends. I'm trusted for that...

It's the remains of what's left of my previously so-called "dignity"...

A stunning beauty she was back then. Kudos for your taste.

Boxing day - annual walk to collect car from inlaws' place (5 or 6 miles).

About 12°C (having dropped to near zero last night). Very little wind - dry with overcast sky. Some photos I took on the way (Kennet & Avon Canal, near Burghfield):

Big bugger coming, but it's OK 'cause Santa's in charge ...

... had about 9" each side ...

... but got through OK.

JohnDG,

Isn't there a whole community/culture that lives on canal boats in England?

- I believe there is, but I'm afraid I don't know anything about it.

A bunch of people were permanently moored in London near some quite posh apartments. All the boats were lashed together with walkways etc. The land-livers were incensed at these folk ruining their view. Ha ha ! It was a couple of years ago, so I don't know if they are still there.

Many people live permanently on canal boats, but as individuals. There is a thriving trade in old boats for renovation. The UK Canal network is extensive and you can get near to most places in England at least.

If I recall rightly, there's a lot of the same on the Continent - Holland, France, Germany, etc. on the canal/river systems there. Here, we have a few isolated communities made up of houseboats, mainly in southern California and here in sunny Florida (where at 0800 local it is - per NOAA - 63 degF).

You're right. In the UK such boats are often called narrow boats.

This is not that good a picture, but as you can see the dimension require some inventive internal design due to size ! Continental boats are much bigger. In the UK many tunnels exist on the waterways and anything larger would not get thru. Same is true for 'locks' used to navigate to a higher point. It's real good fun for a holiday, although I haven't done so for many years. Traditionally boats would be pulled by horse on a canal-side toe-path. To get thru tunnels a couple of guys would lie sideways on planks and 'walk' the thing thru. Now all boats are kitted with engines. It's all a major relic of the Industrial Revolution. Stoke Bruerne is regarded as the centre of it all by most. I've heard that occasionally people lash them together so they can cross to France on a good day.

Somewhere on CR4 I passed a question about a houseboat community. There was some problem to do with water level in the lake where they were all based. Not sure where the thread is, but it might turn up if you search 'houseboat'. Sounds like a cool way to live.

This is a regular-sized narrowboat for comparison with the 'big bugger' (The Apple) shown in my #182

I've always thought it would be way cool, but you have to be either independently wealthy, or willing to live like a pilgrim to do it - in this end of the world, anyway. Love the pics, BTW!

As to low lake water levels, that problem could be in many places here - Lake Okeechobee (largest in FL and mostly below sea level) for example has been setting low-level records on nearly a daily basis all year - there are parts of the bottom of it that nobody had ever seen before now far from the nearest water level. Opportunistic authorities used the low level as a way to clean out rubbish and dredge silted in portions with excavators. Parts of it were exposed long enough for brush to grow. Then the brush dried out and caught fire, so there were wildfires burning in the lake bed. Weird, but such things happen...

This reminds me of a very disappointed American Guy I met in Norfolk while on a boating holiday many years ago.

I asked him why he was so disappointed and he said he had only come over because someone had told him that the "Broads" were great in the UK.......

Can't speak to Norfolk, only been to Portsmouth and Londinum myself...oh, and a tour bus to the place - Windsor Castle is it? - where the Queen Mum used to hang out. Up the Thames a ways, as I recall. But the "broads" I ran into weren't at all bad... (wink, wink - nudge, nudge - say no more!) Presumably you speak of boats broad abeam tho'...

LMAO ! You should copy that one to your 'translations' thread.

Nice picture by the way John - it gives a far better impression of a typical Uk canal.

Going over this is a hoot - most boats don't have an enclosed are around the tiller !

Don't forget the house boats in Sausalito! Immortalized in the book "Erasmus with Freckles " and the movie "Dear Bridgette!"

And while not exactly "barges", there are more than a few folks who live on boats along the Inter-Coastal Waterway over here on the right coast, too. Actually some of them are pretty swank digs, from what I've seen.

BTW, I live on the west coast (of Florida) in a suburb of (get this!) Beverly Hills.

I've heard that there are floating stores to cater to the barge traffic, and whole generations live on these things, including barge to barge weddings.

Re: The weather where you are NOW!

Well we used to keep whole generations moored in boats !

Ive never seen a floating barge shop, but they may exist. Not really needed due to the numerous canal-side pubs and towns through which they pass. Weddings probably occur - do to new laws you can now get married pretty much anyplace you want (formerly it had to be church or Registry office), but obviously this was discriminatory towards barges who couldn't get there. One of you lot is trying to patent barge-to-barge bliss !

The weather right now is mild but dark. I just set the thermostat to 20 in my living room because I have snuffles. Del mentioned having snuffles a while back and it looks like I have caught it. I hate having to wipe my runny nose all the time, but also dislike those menthol chemical weapons you can use to stop it. Strikes me as a bit like trying to stop yourself sweating with chemicals - the body is doing it for a reason. This is so annoying because I rarely get colds etc (probably cos Kris base1 is usually kept cold - putting CH in may have been a mistake). One of the most effective cures I've heard of is to take a cold shower - it seems to kick the bodies defenses into action.

If it truly is a cold virus, and if you can get your body to 105° F, the cold virus will fall apart in your system.

Put all your cloths on, get into bed with an electric blanket turned to max, and drink a pint of whiskey to get the blood to the surface of your skin. If you survive, your cold will be gone in the morning.

I tried your suggestion. All I have now is a throbbing head-ache ! Next time I'll ask a non-Doctor. Nobody at the party believed me when I said somebody called vermin made me do it. On the bright side, at least the only place I've pissed myself the past year is whilst reading CR4.

We had a great time in Ireland (Dublin) but both got bad colds. Found a good Irish (?) remedy:-

take a big Whiskey glass, fill it half full of hot water, wait one minute, tip hot water away, half fill glass with good Irish Whiskey, add a large piece of lemon with 5 Cloves stuck in it, two teaspoons of sugar, fill with hot water, stir, drink as hot as you can bear it THEN get into bed with a hot w(oman)ater bottle, cover well and sleep it off!!
