The weather where you are NOW!

11/24/2007 5:47 PM

The old British art of starting a conversation, especially with someone you don't know (in a train carriage for example) was always to discuss the weather......in fact, the British people have a lifetime patent on making British weather seem worse than it really is.....they should live here!!! We "talk it bad!" so to say.....

...and as I was searching of a way to bring as many CR4 members together in a general Blog I decided that would be my main topic - YOUR Weather.

It would be great to go off topic as often as possible and NOT to see this as "going off topic!!"....if you get my meaning!!!

No qualifications to join, no previous knowledge, just be yourselves - anything goes!

Please give a city or town as a location, not too far away from where you actually are, of course we cannot check up anyway, it would be nice to be fairly accurate.

Whether you update daily, weekly, monthly of even less seldom, does not matter...just be there occasionally as you see fit please.....

.......just anytime when you feel the URGE!!! And once you have given in to your URGE, then write a few lines here....

I will start with a short synopsis of the weather around Frankfurt Germany:-

Winter is here, we have had several flurries of light snow over the last few weeks, which did not lay, I got the summer tires off the car last week, winter tires on naturally, its been damn cold and it has rained and drizzled several days, but today we had 7°C and bright sunshine, it was really nice to be out. I should have taken my Sunglasses with me!!

Re: The weather where you are NOW!

Good scheme, Andy - I'll go with it. I've added lat+long coords for (somewhere close to) my location (google earth etc. will give you a good idea, but you'll only be within about 200m).

Yesterday (Saturday) started cold & clear, about -4°C. Later, clouded over & warmed up - about +10°C max (at a guess - I've got a project to put a few temp. sensors around - outside, upstairs, downstairs etc) but haven't got it together yet). Bit of very light rain late afternoon.

Now dry, thin cloud, big moon. About 4°C (at a guess).

Re. temperature measurements: my digital thermometer is on loan elsewhere, so I'm down to guessing. Hope to rectify this soon.

Great first post John and that idea with Lat & long is perfect. Thanks for the weather observations too....

For anyone in the UK who does not want to bother to find a nearby lat & long, the postcode does it perfectly. If you do not want to give your post code exactly, just change one of the parameters slightly and check it it on Google earth to push the point up down or left right.

Do not change it too much or you will be in the next county or the north Sea even!!!!

South side of Houston Texas, between Houston and Galveston. Pouring down buckets and about 9C (48 F). Cold nasty rain. This is winter for us. In a few days it will be in the 20's (C) again. I typically have to mow my garden lawn year round...

Re: The weather where you are NOW!

Lovely day here in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Temperature around 28 degrees C, blowing a warm "Nor'wester" wind from the Southern Alps (Similar to the FÖHN wind in Europe, Chinook in Canada, or Sirocco in North Africa)

A picture of a lake up in the Alps today, would look like this:

Note the typical "Nor'west" arch in the sky.

Kind Regards....

I am jealous of your weather there in sunny NZ. The weather here in Brecksville, OH (USA) is into the late autumn mess of rain/snow mix. Cold enough to make you shivver at -5C in the wee hours, because of the dampness.

My daughter is actually on her way today to a Medical conference in Melbourne Australia. She is stopping in Auckland,NZ on her way home (next week). She has a job offered to her there and is likely moving her family there next year. So maybe I will visit NZ next year. Sure sounds like the place to be during this time of year.

Nice warm whether here in Sunny South Africa. Up to 38°C.

The previous week we almost had rain every day (almost on Monday, almost on Th.....)

Last week we had rain every day. (10 - 30mm each day)

It is warm but I don't see any sign of global warping!

Hello Hendrik,

"I don't see any sign of global warping"

What's this "Global Warping" phenomenon you mention.

I've not seen it around here, either...

Hi SparkY

Although I see traces of Global Warming I generally don't agree with the causes and solutions - I sometimes think the reasoning is "warped."

In my own language we use a sound alike word which directly translates to Global Confusion. It does not work in English.

About the permanent bank of clouds. Is this a fixed warm-moist / cold front meeting place?

I have a nice photo somewhere of such a bank almost above me.

Hi Andy

Warming = Verwarming

Confusing = Verwarring = the result of confusing.

Verwar = the act of confusing.

I also find that I can understand German manuals.

It is very similar, verwirrend instead of Verwarring! But as you point out, when reading the differences do not matter so much, the problems start when listening or speaking!!

I have noticed that there are major similarities between German, Flemish, Dutch and Swedish when looking at the written words, sometimes also when spoken but not often enough to be really useful....

We also have 'n word verwarrend.

maybe I am verwir - we have 11 official languages in SA. Neighbours on on side was German speaking, on the other side Portuguese (noncomprendo), I understand and speak a bit of all. Weather I understand the whether is another question.

About your quote about Sir Winston - I think it was coined in SA. He was a young war reporter during the war 1898-1902. He somewhere wrote that he swam the mighty Apies (river) to escape. Maybe he had his trouser off but one can walk through the river ankle deep where he crossed.

He was not given to lying much as far as I can tell, or he would have never achieved what he did in WWII....

Not trying to do Sir W. down (I have great respect for what what he did), but while politicians rarely tell barefaced lies (those who do don't last long), stretching the truth until very close to the elastic limit is their stock-in-trade.

Well its a long time ago......

I personally just don`t see the point of criticising someone, even in such a tiny fashion as this (paddle or swim!!), who is long dead (I helped as a young RN recruit to line the London streets for his funeral in 1965! So technically speaking, I was invited.....), who did a great deal to make sure that both Hitler & the Japanese Emperor were not successful in enslaving large parts of the world's population, to mention just a little......your life and mine might not be so good if he had not done such a good job......

I am reading the 6 volumes he wrote about WWII (on Vol V now)and it is as though he was standing right next to me and holding forth, his prose is fantastic and often exceedingly witty. Not in the least boring.....

I feel that I have got to know him a lot better through this....he really did tell it as he saw it. Great reading, but due to the sheer massive amount of text, most people will never even pick up a single copy - but they are really missing out on something.

Sir Winson's reporting of the war was very accurate. and the quote was to a South African friend. more like a joke understood by both - I would say.

I drive by the place were the crossing took place almost every day. The one lane is a bridge and the other nothing more than a culvert. I sometimes can't help thinking of the Mighty Apies when I pass there.

I agree he was great.

We don't have any wether locally, sad to say.

We used to discuss the next wether on the list, in my early days back on the farm.

Generally we had a few wethers, and jolly good eating they were, being especially kept for that end-of-useful-life duty.

These days,so many years later, I live in a City, and no farmers keep wethers it seems, because the local butchery never get any in stock.....

So you can go out at any time of the year in the same clothes and not get too wet or too cold or hot or anything?

How boring for you.....you must move and see w(h)ether there is anything better to be found elsewhere.....!

New York City: Sunny but cold. Around 32F, 0C at night and 51F during the day. Suburbs are usually about 5-10 degrees cooler at night. Concrete and asphalt tend to keep the city warmer at night.

Now that is REALLY great weather.

Here in the Frankfurt region it was about 4°C at 08:00 this morning, dry, but for how long I can't say, some blue sky, some black clouds, sunlight doing its best to find the holes between the clouds....

I am in the middle of major renovating of our kitchen, a lot of work for the next 2-3 weeks....UGH!!

South Africa (Gauteng Province) today is overcast not cold but cool (temperature around 17°C = 62.6°F). We should have rain during the afternoon.

Weekend past was really pleasant, sunny days with showers late afternoon to cool down. Past week had above average rain, so the plants in my garden are taking over.

Here is weather in a nut shell in Silicon Valley...

Spring is nice about 70° and no clouds to speak of. Summer is nice about 70° and no clouds to speak of. Autumn is nice about 70° and no clouds to speak of. Winter is the rainy season - cold, about 50° to 60° degrees (F). and that's about it.

There's like only one other country that has our weather pattern and it's in the Mediterranean. But that why everyone wants to live here!!!

The Mediterranean is not a country, its a salt water Sea!

Furthermore, contrary to what you may have been told, they have very definite seasons and although snow is seldom, it does actually happen from time to time, the palm trees hate it!!!

Spring in most of the countries attached to the Europe side (Satellite Picture of Med) is full of green grass and wild flowers, which give way to dry summers (mostly) with brown grass as far as the eye can see where no other water supplies (rivers, streams and lakes etc) are available till the end of September, when it cools down and is most pleasant. I prefer late spring personally.....but rain can be a bother till the middle of June sometimes.

You only have to watch the F1 race in Monaco (May each year) to realize just how much rain can fall in the Med area when it wishes too....!!

In north Africa and the middle east, it is much drier and as you can see from the Sat picture, much less green area....of course a picture taken in late summer, would not show the differences quite so great between either side I am sure!

I agree with you completely though that the med is a great place to live, we try and visit it at least once a year.....

.....but the weather is not boring if you know it well! Come and visit, you will really like it I am sure....

Have some relatives in Sedgley on Gospel End Road. Visited then some years ago. Enjoyed the Black Country Museum.

OK, let me be more specific... I am talking about the San Francisco Bay Area. If you have an atlas that has weather pattern graphs, you'll see that our weather is almost unique.

Most places get snow in the winter, spring is a crap-shoot, summer is the rainy season, and fall is usually mild. That ain't how it goes here. And as far as the Mediterranean, there's some place on the coast of Italy (I think) that has seasons like ours. Very few other places do.

Thats about right, even SF & the more southerly parts of the UK have a not too dissimilar weather in my experience to each other....west coast of a large landmass in the northern hemisphere (same planet), they should have a few similarities.....

If you're in the bay area, does that mean you could be hiding out on Alcatraz vermin ? Do they still have Pelicans , I heard the name was derived from that.

I am biding my time on this thread. Apart from anything else the batteries in my electronic weather station gadget need replacing so I can't specify daily temperature at the moment. It's German built, and I think preset for Frankfurt (where it also gets it's time signal from), though it is full adjustable for most European Countries and cities. The annoying bit is having to check local air-pressure when setting it ( I check with a mate who has an old style barometer. The thing is reasonably good at forecasting, except it sometimes looses contact with the outside sensor. Setting an exact barometric pressure is not too crucial ( I think) since it's the change in pressure that helps determine weather forecast. If only Del had thought to set a 'backyard oil drum barometer contest' !

Our weather has been cold the past few weeks (just over zero at night), but is warmer today and raining. Nearest town is sort of Ashford/Canterbury/Folkestone triangle ( Ok, SE Kent sounds clearer).

I'll report more when I've invested in some batteries.

I know Dover, but not Ramsgate and the North coast. Either there of Margate has something called the 'Shell Grotto' that I've got on my places-to-see list. Some weird underground cave system where the walls are plastered in shells - nobody seems to know it's origin. It's a sort of 'Victorian Folly' type thing but possibly older. The whole Kent area has lots to interesting stuff for WW11 & Napoleonic era History fans. Dungeness is good for bird watching, and Samphire Hoe near Dover is cool ( you can stand on the spoil from the Channel Tunnel). Canterbury is good, but a bit too tourist orientated. And of course there are lots of nice country pubs !

Ah,you know the local dialect etc. Not Kentish man as they say ! Actually I'm an interloper and by birth an 'Essex man'. This is somewhat shameful to admit over here. For those not as culturally aware as yourself it involves such things as driving a Ford Cortina with fluffy dice hanging from the mirror, dining in kebab shops and sundry other sins.. Just to confuse people I escaped to Leicestershire at an early age and progressed via Geordie land and London. Regional life in UK certainly gives life variety ! You are tempting me to start a UK cultural awarenes blog !

For those who don't like my posts of an off topic nature ; "Ich werde dich ausstopfen und auf ebay versteigern ". I hope to crap that said what I think it does !

I got to confess to not speaking the German language. Once whilst office bound somebody senior senior called in by phone. My secretary (who I had assumed to be a bit dim) realized and took the phone and in fluent German spoke to the other person. What a gal ! She never paid for a drink again when I was there.

Some excellent translation sites exist, though they are often only good for a phrase or two. The idea of a cultural exchange blog is cool. I've tried this sort of thing before, but with others like yourself interested it could work. CR4 could facilitate explaining regional dialect and idiom. Very cool Andy. Wanna do it as a joint interest ? I'll supply al the links I can to help .

What a good idea. It would be great for us foreigners who have always admired the British. It would give us a look at real people. Some of us really like to learn all we can about different cultures. I'd like to see the same thing on other countries also. CR4 is perhaps one of the best tools to destroy intolerance and hate caused by fear and ignorance. It's great to see engineers from many different countries, backgrounds, and personalities working together to help each other and even unknown strangers.

Many thanks to all of you great guys on CR4.

Richard

Andy & Richard(Techart),

I'm up for the idea. A bit busy following other stuff (in and out of CR4) bur if one of you guys or anyone else starts such a thread I'll try find some useful links to input.

Somewhere way back I had a thread I started about comparing USA and UK technical terms (eg different versions of billion etc), but there is no harm in repeating any of that. Decent language translation sites could be provided by all who are bi-lingual. In addition, sites that give help in understanding local dialect etc may be of use. If someone starts the ball rolling I'll join in. There is a huge range of nationalities on CR4 and many speak several languages. Knowing where to translate the odd word here and there could be of great benefit.

( I have just saturated a post with metaphor, but I'm sure it will become clear with time !). Great idea for a thread, but I regret I don't have time to keep on top of it and see that all questions are answered. A slight bathroom dilemma is keeping me busy ! First person to post such a thread will get a lot of respect ( and probably an all time long thread).

Hi Richard,

I share your sentiments. However it's not just about 'foreigners' understanding Brits, probably more important is for us Brits and other Westerners to understand culture from different places. Respect to you for raising this point. In a number of previous threads I Have tried to broach this subject. I don't see it as a primary purpose of CR4/Globalspec, but occasional diversion to such things can help all in equal measure. Around CR4 are various links that help to connect different usage of technical terms (mainly American vs UK usage) and also British dialect that may appear confusing to many. A lot of the conversation here involves idiom and metaphor that may be obscure to non-English speakers. I'm always willing to try and help others understand, either by direct question on-thread or Private Message.

Should you start a blog on the subject it would have my full support. It helps people communicate and therefor has relevance within CR4.

Regards,

Kris.

Thats for you to decide, the Weather is only an "Ice Breaker" so to say, no more, no less. Maybe I did not explain that part as well as I should have, sorry....

Also from me personally, NOTHING will be considered "off topic", you can go as far "off topic" as you wish (if that makes sense?) as long as it does not have politics in any way shape or form......!

All are welcome, even Democrats and labour voters..... Joke Guys, only a Joke!!! Don't be so sensitive!!!

Re: The weather where you are NOW!

Here in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, it appears that we have started winter in earnest. After our wonderful Roughriders won the Grey Cup on Sunday (Canadian football - only the best - Grey Cup is our national championship), Mother Nature must have figured that it was time to get cold. Our high temperatures this week are forecast to be about -17 degrees Celsius, with lows at night below -25 degrees Celsius. The windchill during the day can take it down to the equivalent of night-time temperatures as well. As I look out my window right now (10:12am), it has started snowing (My children the snow shovellers will be thrilled - Not!) and the sky is a lovely whitish grey giving no visibility further away than a couple of blocks. The great thing is - this is just a start. We can expect much colder weather in the months to come. By the way - the cold doesn't dampen the spirits of Roughrider fans. After the game on Sunday evening, people bundled up their children (except for the one guy who stripped down to his underwear) just to go out and stand on the streets cheering and waving flags. Thousands waited hours outside to greet the team when they arrived home yesterday in Regina, and the streets will be lined with the same fans today for the victory parade. Only in Saskatchewan, you say? We are crazy!

Hi Andy,

Nice topic. I would open Panora's box by observing how meteorologists nowadays are screwing up the forecast, even the short term one (12-24 hours). It seems this industry has one of the lowest outcome/investment ratio. What are those satellites, radars, supercomputers, etc. for? Maybe we should go back to the native peoples who's culture is based on being highly connected to Nature. Wouldn't be nice to hear the weather guy on TV saying: "Chief X said will snow next week for sure up to a deer knee because the hawk moved its nest one foot higher." I would take this more seriously than all those maps, charts and photos...

You have basically just pointed out part of the reason for this Blog!

I watch a few different weather forecasts from different stations some days, you would think that each one is reporting for a different planet most of the time, they hardly ever agree!!

"You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows..."

Here, Crystal River, Florida (West - Gulf of Mexico side, about 70 miles N of Tampa), it is 1500 hours EST, 77 F, wind SSW 14 mph, mostly cloudy. Current highest U.S. temperature is 88 F at Plant City, Florida, which is something like 100 miles away, giving an idea of just how different it can be in even relatively small areas. There's a cool low front moving NNE across the Gulf that could bring us 20 F cooler if it moves inland, but so far it's staying some 100 miles offshore up to the Panhandle (that part of FL that points west across the north side of the Gulf).

Maybe we should understand the climate change as weather change from one TV station to another?

Thats a fresh slant on an old problem!

Maybe we should take the change(s) of clothes with us for each possible weather pattern!

It's a big glob of partially liquefied bear fat in a mason jar. As the pressure changes, more or less fat comes in or out of solution.

Kingston, New York

Winter is slowly creeping in it seems slower and slower each year. Some freezing rain this morning which quickly melted away as the afternoon hit near 45oF. We have had a few freezing days and I personally am hoping for a white christmas.

Taken from Weather Pulse display. Weather Pulse is a program you can download and it places in your system tray the temperature and an icon repesenting sky conditions. Conditions are taken from the nearest ASOS (Automated Surface Observation System) station. In my case, that is the R. L Jones (Riverside) Airport, about 7 1/4 miles to my northeast.

When you click on the temp, a window opens up and you can choose a display of Current Conditions, 10 Hour Forecast, Detailed Forecast, Hourly Forecast, Weather Images, or Alerts. Forecasts come from The Weather Channel. I have the weather image set to a satellite/radar animation of the contiguous US.

I also have NOAA (National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Adminstration) Weather Radio frequencies in the memories of all my ham radios. The weather folder in my Favorites (bookmarks) list has 12 links.

If I could afford a home weather station, I'd give you the conditions at my house.

Hello Kiefer, I can recognize the problem with no money and the interest for weather in general, but I cant say that I have radio freq. and weatherlinks on my pc. Even so, I have made an anemometer from scratch, that is the small dc-motor of an portable cdplayer, a bad cd, 3 plastic cups for to put soap into a washingmashine (UV and acid resistable), some universal glue, a poor VU-meter from an old tapedeck and a 56k modem (the casing), all good stuff I dont use anymore. Calibration is out of the window, when I drive my car at exactly 72 km/h, (20m/s) in calm weather, then watch the reading. I will try to make an electronic windvane to tell the direction of the wind, but it seems a bit hard though. Check www.otherpower.com for other ideas.

Here(thats Denmark, northern Jutland) we've had some nice freezing cool, clear days, with no wind and a nice moon at night. But we'll get rain and wind the next 5 days, so they say in the forecast. Temps at 5C, winds W 5-10 m/s

Thats my first on this forum, have a nice day everybody!

moe

Hi, Moe,

Nice to hear from you.

You've got some good ideas there, with home-brew weather sensors. Any chance you could post a photo or two?

Here it's cold-ish (about 7°C at a guess - must get my thermometer back!), dry but overcast. Not much wind. Lots of horrible drizzly rain earlier today.

Regards, John

A few questions to people in the north.

Don't you save daylight time in summer to be used in winter?

Don't you have global warming?

Re: The weather where you are NOW!

Oh drat, I knew I forgot something. Yes we do save daylight during the summer to use in the winter, but I got so busy goofing off this past summer, I clean plumb forgot to close the vault each day at dusk, All the sunbeams escaped during the night while I wasn't looking and now I'm stuck with whatever drops out of the sky this winter.

As for global warming, It seems to get warmer in the summer and colder in the winter. But I can only speak for where I am as I don't know how warm it is THERE. (Where do I mean by THERE? Well, obviously anywhere but HERE.) It is now 7:34PM Mountain Time. At 40o 31' 59.90" N 112o 00' 48.74" W Give or take .78M Where my butt is planted just now. The temperature is -4.1o C The official Temperature at this moment in our town is 3.9o Colder. In warmish weather the official temperature is a few degrees warmer than where I am. The sensors are located between the Southbound and Northbound Lanes of the Interstate Highway about 19.7 miles NE of my butt. It is in the middle of a desert away from the trees and bushes which surround my oasis.

Oh, and by the way is that spelled bum in the UK?

Near Cabo de Gata, South East corner of Spain! well it started a bit nippy until about ten o'clock (Where does the o' in o'clock come from?) then the sun started warming up until the long sleeves came off and the thin teeshirt want on! Think it was about 24oC, no clouds, no rain, no snow, no wind, no problem, I've got firewood for the cold nights, maybe down to 7-8oC! And I'm still wearing dark glasses!!

Hi JohnDG.

Here in the West Midlands we had that storm last night, it was raining so heavily that it kept me awake for some time. As for the wind, well it blew and it blew for a good 4hrs. At the moment, 11:10, 2-12-02 there is sunshine and complete calm.

Hi, Spencer,

It didn't get this far - not much of it, anyway.

Wet earlier this morning - dried up now. About 10 - 12°C, wind about 2 - 3. Bright, with clouds moving rapidly due south.

Here is our local weather...

Little tidily-bumps run about, while rude jellies wobble, and goony-birds still protect their nests. People are wearing coats and little else to impress the local police. Robbers are using space heaters, and are therefore, far less effective than they normally would be. Sea captains are saying, "Arg!" a lot, and parsons are clutching their robes instead of good looking young men.
