The weather where you are NOW!

11/24/2007 5:47 PM

The old British art of starting a conversation, especially with someone you don't know (in a train carriage for example) was always to discuss the weather......in fact, the British people have a lifetime patent on making British weather seem worse than it really is.....they should live here!!! We "talk it bad!" so to say.....

...and as I was searching of a way to bring as many CR4 members together in a general Blog I decided that would be my main topic - YOUR Weather.

It would be great to go off topic as often as possible and NOT to see this as "going off topic!!"....if you get my meaning!!!

No qualifications to join, no previous knowledge, just be yourselves - anything goes!

Please give a city or town as a location, not too far away from where you actually are, of course we cannot check up anyway, it would be nice to be fairly accurate.

Whether you update daily, weekly, monthly of even less seldom, does not matter...just be there occasionally as you see fit please.....

.......just anytime when you feel the URGE!!! And once you have given in to your URGE, then write a few lines here....

I will start with a short synopsis of the weather around Frankfurt Germany:-

Winter is here, we have had several flurries of light snow over the last few weeks, which did not lay, I got the summer tires off the car last week, winter tires on naturally, its been damn cold and it has rained and drizzled several days, but today we had 7°C and bright sunshine, it was really nice to be out. I should have taken my Sunglasses with me!!

That's bad, even by my standards ! With a cold I'd like to get something nice, round and furry to snuggle my feet on. Oh, vermin......

Andy,

I'm still trying to get this right... You mean right here? This exact spot? Doesn't this overlap with that other thread about small spaces?

Also, when you say NOW, do you mean "now" now or do you mean "now" back when you first started the thread?

Re: The weather where you are NOW!

The weather over Christmas could have been much worse, but it so "Grey" - grey Sky, grey land, grey everything.

We have had frost all the time now for over 10 days, with nothing above -2°C, sometimes down to -8 or 9. The trees looked good with their "Grey Hair" of frost on every branch and twig, but it was not worth photographing as no sun ever got through the thick clouds, dismal!

We actually got about 0.5cm of snow on Christmas day, which left the roads clear for driving etc., but again looked very good, or it would have if the Sun had ever managed to break through.......I am sure that Rudolf was needed this year for Sleigh guidance late on the 24th...... Or does Santa have Radar now?

We are seeing (for us) almost record high pressure for over a week, 103.6 KP right now still, which means that we might start getting smog collecting over us and not being moved on if the pressure does not drop soon.....then we are not allowed to drive our cars as much as we might wish!!!

My Wife and I are off to Dublin, Ireland for a week on Saturday, to take on our Silver Wedding (31/12/07) the Honeymoon that we had no time for then.....so do not fight and I will see(?) you all when I get back......

OK. I'll play along... It was about 48° F for the day, and clear. 48° is when your legs start getting cold, and you need to start wearing something under your blue-jeans.

48° is when your friends stop showing up at Starbucks or go inside even though they're smokers.

Sorry I don't know what the temperature is NOW, but I'm guessing about 44° F. That's as good as it gets in the Silicon Valley. Maybe 20° F on the worst of winters.

But we could not do without you. Here in the middle of England today it is 11C, or for you vermin 46F.

Hi, Spencer,

I make 11°C = 51.8°F ... or was that a special conversion for Vermin ?

Hi JohnDG.

Sorry about that, but I have just got out of bed and my brain needs it's coffee before it works properly!

You are right, 11C = 51.8F. Incidently, this is very warm for this time of the year over here.

Re: The weather where you are NOW!

OK. I'll be straight with you guys... Over the last several weeks, daytime temperatures have been ranging between 55° F (12.78 C° or 285.93° K) to about 44° F (6.67°C or 279.82° K).

Of course, nighttime temperatures have been in the high 30°s F (> 2.2° C or 275.37° K).

On "very" rare occasions does it get below 32° F (0° C or 273.15 K). When this happens, the skies are clear, it doesn't rain, and any small puddle of water in a parking lot becomes an insurance company's worst nightmare!

Don't know whether this is related to global warming or not, but here our rainy season is the winter. So far, very little rain!!!

Many thanks for your good wishes.

We are often asked why on that date?

The Flip answers are that it gave us one years back tax cash in the hand and that there is always a party somewhere!!

The real answer is that my wife was very ill that year and was in and out of hospital about 10 times.....it was the first date that she managed to be on her feet for!!! She had just spent Christmas in the hospital.....

Luckily for us the reason for such problems is alive and well and called Sarah!! Who will be 25 next year!!!

WAY cool - please send Ms Sarah my wishes for a happy birthday - can't be too far past mine, I reckon! Although nowhere NEAR as many of 'em...

I get asked about the date a lot too - I tell folks my Dad said they just tacked me on at the end of the year for tax purposes...

It is starting to snow again.

Weather HERE and NOW - it's 72°F and 59% rel hum at 1015 hours per NOAA.

Weather HERE but LATER - predicted to drop into the low 30's overnight due to a cold front moving in (all that rainy/snowy weather from Texas up to Maine moving across the eastern seaboard). Lows in the mid-upper 20's later in the week, with highs in the low-mid 50's (all in degF BTW).

The 70's we've been having are 10-15 deg above normal average temps, so the mid-high 50's will get us back on schedule. But those lows are NOT typical!

Re: The weather where you are NOW!

01/10/2008 3:28 AM

I spent a week in Dublin, Ireland from the 29th Dec. to the 5th of Jan., our Honeymoon that we were unable to take 25 years ago! So it became our Siver Wedding Anniversary instead!!

The weather was I believe for Irish weather very kind, a tiny shower of rain one day that did not even get the pavement wet and a 4 hour soaking on the 4th!

It actually went down to -6 (very unusual) on the 3rd for a few hours, then snowed over 90% of Ireland (but not in Dublin, the handful of snow we had was so thin that it did not even lay around.....)

Dublin turned out to be great, pubs and bars with good Irish live music, lots of good shopping for the wife and excellent Guinness for me etc etc., about our only problem was that we both developed colds by the Sunday 30th, Monday 31st time that sapped a lot of our energy.......of course for the trip home, they were mostly gone!!

We flew home via Zurich (costs the same!) to Frankfurt as this saves a lot on the price of Booze. I bought 2 x 1 liter bottles of Irish Whiskey (Clontarf, the name of the area we stayed in as well!!) and paid exactly half as much as if we had flown directly to Frankfurt.....because Zurich (Switzerland) is not in the EU, an old and well known trick....

Frankfurt also allows people returning from abroad to buy booze cheaply at the duty paid counter, but are very limited on special types eg. no Clontarf, only Jameisons and one other.....but my wife also wanted Cointreau, so a liter was purchased there for 16€!!

Here it is again my least favorite color of gray outside with temps around or just above 0C, I have not yet been outside to check this fully out today though!!

Hi, Andy, glad to hear you had a good time.

Have you ever done Zurich to Frankfurt by rail? I did Zurich to Dusseldorf many years ago (when I was installing & commissioning medical scanners out there). Best rail journey I've ever been on!

Only the bit from Frankfurt to Düsseldorf, which is pretty good too as then it went along the Rhine for miles in the 80s.

I do believe they are routed differently via Gießen nowadays, not so good, at least those from Frankfurt....I would think that from Zurich they would take the same route as before....

I will checkup and see where they go nowadays via....

Congratulations on your silver anniversary. Here's to you and your sweetheart.

Hope to some day tour Europe with my dear wife. Gotta check out the places you mentioned, especially since I really love that good ole Irish Music. Got about 150 Irish Songs on my i-pod.

Weather Report: Currently -12o Yesterday we had more snow fall in one day than we've had since 1952. I spent 8.5 hours just shoveling snow. Hope to have a break today to get some work done.

I doubt it - the infernal "squirrel bathtub" thread went to, what, 1200+...and apparently can still be added to, should anyone have nothing at all to do with their time. But it's a good excuse to avoid all that typing!

My main ambition in life now is a '1234'. It would be sort of cool to hit that mark. This thread does however have considerable potential. Del's backyard battery challenge should have by rights done so. I'm positively annoyed at the prospect somebody may beat my egomaniac thread, but it's still good fun to read some of the lunacy..

Ah, so I do lad, so I do - it was left me by me maternal grandfather, whose people came from County Cork. As I'm sure you're well aware, that's the locale of Blarney Castle and the famed Blarney stone. Y'know what they say of those who've kissed the stone, of course. Legend within our family has it that one of the ancestors must have darn near swallowed the bloody rock!

"Harrison Ford would be so jealous."

I dunno about that - his Indy Jones isn't exactly loquacious. And really, that sounds more like a plot device for a Nicholas Cage National Treasure sequel. Speaking of which, I recommend both to date if you've a chance to see them. One of few sequels to equal (or better) the first. Go for a theatre showing if possible - TV can't capture the scale and scope...

I think I saw that National Treasure film - the one where they find all the treasure hidden by the knights Templar in NYC ? I don't get how they could make a sequel - they found the goodies and all got rich. Happy ever after kind of thing.

People frequently tell me I have verbal diarrhoea. Is there an internet equivalent expression, I probably have it too. I did like the way Indy simply shot that sword wielding bad guy.

As long as your verbal diarrhea isn't complicated by mental constipation, you should be fine. Take two of these...

...and see a physician if the condition degrades. Yes, the single shot to the brisket was a classic - like I said, Indy wasn't given to over-discussion. And, yes, the very movie with the Knights Templar treasure. The sequel gets him (Cage's character) involved over a point of honor, not financial need. But there IS a treasure - think "Cibola". Plus, we get to meet his Mom! A treasure in her own right...

Take two of these...

...and I'll have you believing I can type 10K wpm. Or take two of these...

...and you won't give a good sharp rap whether I can type at all, much less how fast.

Why do you ask? I suspect the truth is dependent upon content and context, but anywhere from 50-75 wpm, I suppose.

One of these days I'll have to have a session with Mavis Beacon. Meantime I'm stuck with the 'two-fingered' approach.

Mavis Beacon? I presume your equivalent of Evelyn Wood, the sped reding quen.

Well I meant this one, though I am now confounded at the posibility I have 8 fingers and two tumbs ! Counting to eleven is a problem unless I drop my pants.

On a more serious note, my son types with two fingers. He's real fast - One day I'll have to check his typing rate. I'm sure it would give a profesional typist a run for their money. Some people seem to have a real knack for this type of thing. I'm a complete clutz with a keyboard, and my handwriting is deplorable.

OK. Well, it looks like the San Francisco Bay Area is going to have one of our "every 10 year" winters. So what does this mean...

Currently, daily temperatures are in the 50's - 60's. However, next week we're supposed to get hit be the Alaskan Express. That's a low pressure system that's heading toward us from the Gulf of Alaska. So we're looking at 20's and 30's (F), and snow down to 1500 feet. If it's a really good one, we could get snow at sea level. Yes it actually happens here every great once in awhile!

We are still mostly suffering in the "Greyout" conditions that I have bored you all (and myself!) with mentioning several times.

What has been amazing for Germany in January are the fact that some days are getting upto 15°C !!! Totally out of the norm....25 years ago we had only minus temperatures for the later part of December, all of January and February at least.....with late snow falls in April of upto a meter or more......

Yesterday I saw the Sun a few times, once it actually shined on us!!! Amazing.

The warm spells have brought gale force winds occasionally too....I expect the UK is suffering with high winds if I notice it here.....

Typical late autumn weather here in the mountains in South West Germany (almost on the border with France) in a tiny town called Dahn.

You can rent a 2 bedroom (1 double, 1 bunk beds, room for more beds if needed...) flat (apartment for the USA!) here (modern, clean and very well appointed) for €35 per day if anyone is interested, lovely walks and scenery too.....hotel costs €80 a day for a single, but very, very nice.....

Weather is building up for the first snows here as it is around 600 meters above sea level.......we had some flakes today, but not enough to call real snow.....just as we are getting ready to leave on saturday!!!

If I'm not mistaken, you have an anniversary fast approaching - any big plans for this year?

Re: The weather where you are NOW!

A couple of nights ago we got snow, snow as we have not seen for many years, 30cm or about a foot.

It has turned the countryside into the Magic kingdom, beautiful!

My new acquisition a Weimaraner bitch (4 months and 21.5 Kg or about 44 pounds or so!) loves it, thought it is now getting so cold, I am worried about her ears freezing.

It was -18°C this afternoon and about -23°C tonight.

We have a very good insulated house and I had to laugh at the front door (also relatively new and well insulated!), the cylinder lock is the only metal connection that goes from outside to inside, it is now sporting an icy beard, inside the house!!!

It is great outside during the day, thick powder snow and totally blue skies with a good Sun, though walking through the local forest is too cold for long walks....

"...new acquisition a Weimaraner..."

You may not know - we have 3 Weimies! Gracie, about 10½ years old, Reginald and Poti, both about 3½ years old. As EnviroMrs puts it, having 2 male Weimies the same age is a mark of insanity, but it IS entertaining. They are a challenging breed. Very active, and too smart for most human companions' own good.

I had my first Weimaraner 31 years ago, since then no other breed is in any way interesting for me......totally brilliant as they are intelligent, clean, lose little hair. As my ex wife always said, pretty enough for the ladies and manly enough for the men!!

Chloe II is fantastic, she fills a 2 man sofa already at 4 months.....

Loves gun shot sounds, starts looking for where the downed bird has landed as soon as I fire a starting pistol.....already very protective and watchful, not aggressive though.

Weather has got even colder, we had around -30°C overnight, it was still -26°FC at 11:00am....sun and clear skies. Will stay as cold tonight according to the forecast.

Here, yesterday (6th) was a beautiful day - clear & blue all over - but bluddy freezing! This morning I tried to take a shortcut down a county lane on the way to work, but found a narrow road, steep hill, sheet of about ½" of ice. Had to do 37pt turn & backtrack.

Warmed up today, overcast & 0° ±1° during the day, about +1º now (10:45pm, figures all °C).

I'd claim modesty for being in such relatively balmy conditions, but everybody'd see right through that, wouldn't they? OK, mental irregularity, leave it at that, and let's move on, eh?

I was just venting off some frustrations... Sorry about that... We ended up with about 25 cm of snow and traffic wasn't sooo bad after all...So I went to the local pub for a pint (or 2) and a good hockey game (we won 6-3 !!!). All in all, a good day
