USB widgets

12/20/2007 12:46 AM

Looking for the most weird or wonderful or inventive or just downright idiotic garbage you can plug into a USB port.

Ok I know about the office rocket launcher, the plug-in AA battery and even a mouse on a bike that pedals and counts words as you type. OK so don't believe me.....

Hi again, BabyGuinness,

I had heard about those things, I trust you know what you're doing when they are plugged in.

I cannot "see your icon", but I can see your Avatar, evidently the pic was taken at Rongatai airport, when the wind blew old Santa splat against the nose of a stationary plane...

"Father Christmas/SantaClaus" is not what Christmas is all about, anyway.

Did you know where his red suit came from?

Check out CocaCola history, they were not the first, but they permanently changed the jolly old gentleman's suit colour, last century, refer:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Claus

Kind Regards....

Re: USB widgets

I have posted before regarding this device, so here it is again.

Oh, just found the humping dog USB flash drive http://www.hiptechblog.com/ and the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rI-pct3zy18&eurl=

I don't know, its not a very practical memory stick to put in your pocket. Almost impractical as the memory stick that looks like a stick.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/31/business/yourmoney/31goods.html?ex=1325221200&en=3fcdea5d2e446b81&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss

Now doesn't that look practical.

Ok as self-appointed administrator for this thread the current ratings are as follows:

1. Humping dog

2. Le vibromasseur

3. Desk vacuum

4. Pedalling mouse

5. Captain's log (doesn't look real, but what am I talking about???)

However (as my school report cards used to read) very disappointed, must try harder!!! 2 of the above are my own contributions!!!

There must be something really strange out there...go for it guys and gals.

There is a fine and ever-increasing selection of arcane USB-powered items here:

Now I'm away for a well-earned cup of Earl Grey tea, after perusing that webpage....

Don't Worry Del. She's just cooling off because her USB powered seat cooler failed. I'm sure she'll need to warm up after the swim...maybe on her USB powered warming blanket! I'd say she might need need you to help warm her up, but it's a long way to Hong Kong from Harlow!

I got something free in the mail many years ago. It was called CatsEye or CatsPaw or something. Was a handheld device, shaped liike a cat lying down, that had a IR scanner in the nose. you were supposed to use this free device and software to scan barcodes. It was targeted toward consumers,no idea in the world why anyone would want to scan there own barcodes at home, but whatever. It obviously never got used and sits in my computer junk drawer along with its Win95 drivers to this day hehehe.....

It is still in its original packaging...the bidding starts at $50.......

This is totally off topic, but being a hater of cables - I'm mean aggravated hate.

I really love my Cannon scanner! It gets all of its power off of the USB port, so no AC connection to add to the already exasperating load of knotted cables!!!

Re: USB widgets

You should see my collection of desktop USB and other hardware...

5 external USB Hard Drives - total over 1TB, 1 USB Internet Phone, 1 USB Router, 1 USB inkjet printer/scanner/copier, 1 USB Laser fax printer/copier, 1 USB mouse, 1 USB keyboard, 1 set USB speakers, 2 USB powered hubs.

Of course there are other phones, answer-phone, and Mains surge diverters, 2 x UPS, plus all those power-packs which clutter-up the place.

I dare not take a photo of it all, because the Forum Editor Window is not big enough.

Kind Regards....

Re: USB widgets

In answer to your question, as many as your expansion slots can hold adaptor cards for. Behold, the most worthless USB-powered device ever conceived.

...........The USB Grill

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/peripherals/usb-powered-bbq--wtf-196087.php

30 USB outputs are not going to give you much heat at all. What's that, about 15W of heating (before diode losses due to the parallel connection). Your average sandwich maker is around 650W, and average griller around say 1200-2200W.

Hello Jack,

That USB grill looks interesting. Is it yours?

What length of time does it take How Long to grill a piece of streaky bacon?

"How Long" is the cook, of course.

Kind Regards....

Re: USB widgets

It's not mine obviously. Someone else's little project. I thought the original source was Japanese (they really do have a qwerky sense of invention, but that is another thread altogether).

No, not my style - impractical and illogical. The heat loss from the computer power supply would probably do a better job of cooking that meat. What's the cost now days of USB expansion cards?, now compare that to the cost of a standard 110V or 230V sandwich griller (or similar). Madness, there are some things you should not stick into your USB ports.
