Guruship

12/27/2007 12:43 AM

Fellows I've just been granted "Guru" ship (500 +) . I am happy and honoured but at the same time I feel it is unjustfied when I rank as Guru with the rest:

Kris - 4432 + : Del the Cat - 3355 + : Vermin - 3300 + : Andy Germany - 2910 +

PWSlack - 2690 + : Aurizon - 1920 + : C Rummel3 - 1538 + : Electroman - 1465 +

and lots of lots of other CR4 friends.

Comparatively I am no where.

Guru is a Hindi word for Teacher

CR4 ratings according to me should be:

+ 500 = Guru

+ 1000 = Bara (Big) Guru

+ 2000 = Maha (Huge) Guru

+ 3000 = Uttam (Ultimate) Guru *

+ 4000 = Supertum (Super) Guru *

+ 5000 = Guru Guru *

+ 10000 & > = Guruji

* Perhaps some friend from India with good grip on the hindi language can correct with the right hindi word.

Hello again ducon,

I "collect" interesting graphics, and try and remember exactly where I put them, while awaiting a use for each.

I have a few spare ones, should you wish to start your own collection, and seeing as you're such a helpful sort of chap, call here to collect them in person, any time.

Just so you know me when you arrive here at the airport, I attach a picture of myself, taken with my brother some 40 years ago.

The only problem both of us have, is that neither of us can remember which of us is which.

on joining the dizzy heights of "Guru" and for being able to

Kind Regards....

I got a couple of good answer points there .

I think Mark (mgaulin) is working on an improvement. Maybe your inputs can be used.

Dear Ducon,

Can you please provide me with thread Steam Accumulator in Mechanical, because I didn't found it.

But a preliminary design for a steam accumulator vessel based on Design Pressure 10 bar, Design Temp. 250 oC, Corrosion Allowance 3 mm, Radiography 10% (RT 3), Inside Dia. 4 m, and by using carbon steel material ASME SA516 Grade 70:

a. Shell Plate Thickness : 21 mm.

b. Ellipsoidal 2:1 Head Thickness : 21 mm (min.)

Note : The vessel wall thickness 21 mm can be minimized by reducing the inside diameter of the vessel.

Hello Abdel Halim Galala,

"Can you please provide me with thread Steam Accumulator in Mechanical, because I didn't found it."

If you need to Search for what you wanted, you could "Search all of CR4" in the Search Box, using "Steam Accumulator" as combined words in same order of a short phrase - same as Google or other Internet Search Engine.

So I've done that for you, gotten the results of all "Steam Accumulator" on CR4, and chosen the Topic Threads started by Ducon, so here it is, click on it:

http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/15632/Steam-Accumulators

Kind Regards....

If we would decount and substract off topic's and blabla answers there would be much less Guru's.

Quality definitely matters more than quantity. Unfortunately there's no reliable way to measure the quality of a reply. Even if we use a voting system (as in the "good answer" feature), we ask mostly non-expert members to rate expertise. Oh well, as someone pointed out to me, the "Guru" title is mainly for fun.

Hi svengali,

I think the "good answer" rating should have a definite impact upon "guruship".

You said "we ask mostly non-expert members to rate expertise". So what! If CR4 members believe it's a good answer then it definitely needs to count toward your place on the mountain of Sparky.

Whether one is an expert, or not, in a particular field posted by a sincere questioner, we, as a whole, start to think about the topic in ways that a reader of the original post may have not considered. Granted, multiple threads develop that lead into, sometimes, strange places , but then again, we gain insights that were previously not considered. So yes! Good answer ratings should be a primary requirement for membership exclusive to the mountaintop.

Perhaps (so as not to demote too many folk), we could have an apprenticeship program for guru wannabes. Are you listening JohnDG?

Can we post a vote for grand poobah of guruship? I vote for Del. Anyone else?

Re: Guruship

Of course! However, I sometimes find Shyam a little hard to follow. So I would have reservations about where his place should be on Sparky's mountain.

Instead of guruship (what a term!), let's just call it:

α: "Hi there, we're listening",

β: "Good to here from you again",

γ: "I wanta' here what you gotta' say",

δ: "I'm all ears!"

ε: "I humbly bow to your insights!",

ω: "Master, please teach me".

∞: Go find another forum, your antenna's broke!

BUT!!! the entertainment factor absolutely must be a prime requisite for membership in to the "higher order". For therein contains the seed that draws us all, newcomers and gurus alike, back for further punishment, and chastisement, by our peers.

there's more the whole place is filled w/crochetty old guys, who are quick w/a quip.

JohnJohn, fair enough -- I agree with your point. The "good answer" rating, although not completely reliable, seems like the best option presently available for measuring the quality of a members contributions. It at least sounds like a more objective criterion than the total number of posts (which often include off-topic replies, as Gwen pointed out). My point, which was too narrow, referred to the paradox of non-experts trying to rate expertise. But as you explained, a good answer (even when not offering a definite solution) can get us thinking in productive directions. So I will vote your answer as a good one.

I agree. I do not know how much tracking is done automatically (other than #of Posts) but if I could suggest a rating system it would use the following.

1. The Guru post counter should only be incremented once per day, instead of once per post. This would at least require all GURUS to have been here and posting 1+ years. (500 days)

2. Ideally the GOOD ANSWER # would be a factor, Say if you maintain at least a 1% (1 out of 100) then your GURU counter stays applicable.

3. Those that maintain a higher (say 5%) good answers, then they are allowed to increment their GURU counter twice per day, and so on.

4. Have a bar graph in Avatar that let's you know (Green decaying to yellow, decaying to red) as your good answer percentage falls, warning you to keep your posts relevant, and use them wisely.

5. Marking your own post off topic removes it from the 'percentage calculator" shown in #3-4 above- this allows the clever wit of some to be posted without them being penalized, allowing some of us to mark our own as off topic more often.

Using me as a rough example: 146 posts, posted on 105 (guess) different days.

My guru counter would equal 105, however since I only have 1 good out of 146 total posts, my correction factor is 0, thus my chances of being GURU are also 0. But if I had 5% good answers then my GURU counter would be 210 because my correction factor is 2.

I have been humbled numerous times on this site, and really do try to refrain from posting. Over the last 2 years I have also been educated, and entertained- thanks for all of it.

Thanks for responding

I was only suggesting the counter (not posts) be limited to 1 tick per day (or possibly more if your correction factor allows for it)

It might be dangerous to stand between an addict and his fix!

Don't refrain from posting (blimey, Kris & Del never do ), all contribution, even the otp ones help. This is inspiring me to actually get back on the boards. Since my Daily Digest stopped getting through (CL is sure it's being sent out correctly), and work got manic rather than busy, I've not got further than PMs. Trouble is, now I'm wasting my evenings on CR4...

Nice, little Malleus Maleficarum you came up with there. Just one question... Who died and made you Torquemada?

Sorry if my post offended you. I feel the titles should not imply knowledge level. I could achieve GURU before the end of this weekend, but in reality I would be no different than yourself- simply a "poster child"

From some of the things I've seen vermin shrug off in the short time I've been around, I doubt very much that you COULD offend the fuzz-ball. I haven't been able to, anyway...

Concur that if the titles imply knowledge level(s), then there would have to be a tie-in to the good answer rating, but I don't think that's how it was originally designed (not that I actually know anything about it, all guesswork). My take is that it's just mock respect for long-time adherents. I've often been called "guru" for no other reason than I was one of the 10% longest surviving members of a given group. Didn't mean I knew sugar from Shinola.

BTW, I LOVE your term "poster child"! Maybe that could become an official title for those who have 10K posts with 0 good answers...

Please reread my post on what a "CR4 Guru" is. If you do not think this is appropriate, and knowledge in a particular subject is needed, the rank of "CR4 Guru" needs to be radically altered, you rat-bastard.

My porcupine friend, after the first read I gave you a "good answer score".

Here is the problem bound to the open basis of out community: everyone can join and start commenting. The biggest idiot's can give their opinion and shout idea's. From time to time there are beautiful idea's hidden behind the stupidity.

But that is how CR4 is set up: an open community not bound to grades and knowledge but intended to give the free mind a place.

That id why the title is perhaps wrongly chosen or inappropriate. Again some people proud on titles pop up and rush to be a Guru.

Again solved by the good answer option, which can be tricked if it is needed to become a Guru.

Re: Guru ship

I think you're absolutely right Gwen.

Perhaps a better idea might be to just do away with titles altogether.

The avatar info box could simply state "join date" (as it does now), along with number of good answers. In addition, members could vote on "entertainment value" which could also be posted in the avatar box.

I concur that within ridiculous posts are truly "diamonds in the rough" just waiting for some observant soul to pounce upon them and provide the rest of us with a glimpse of rare insight that otherwise would have gone un-noticed.

I for one would rather be deemed something like 'non technical guru' of 'entertainment guru' or 'out of the box guru'.

I know so little about specific issues I feel it is a misnomer for me. However we (me and my ego) do like the recognition that comes with our sincere attempts to earn our keep.

As I continue to learn and glean and create as a result of participation I find it very gratifying to contribute that which I may offer to this wonderful community. Even if it is little more than a smile or the unorthodox response.

Guru is more like seniority, than any qualitative rating.

Having the # of OTP listed below the good answers would be informative also.

Re: Guru ship

01/01/2008 5:29 PM

But the title itself implies knowledge.

As Wiki states "In contemporary India, the word "guru" is widely used with the general meaning of "teacher." In Western usage, the meaning of guru has been extended to cover anyone who acquires followers, though not necessarily in an established school of philosophy or religion. In a further Western metaphorical extension, guru is used to refer to a person who has authority because of his or her perceived secular knowledge or skills".

So using the title as a yardstick of seniority is probably not the correct way to express it. Good answers, however, should go a long way toward "sitting on the mountain".

One thing that also MUST be considered is the particular topic being discussed! A poster may have the most beautiful insights into some thread topic but be somewhat ignorant in another. I know! The said poster should stick with his/her realm of expertise, but you know as well as I do, that ain't gonna' happen.

So, what do we do now?

The floor's open....

Hello Johnjohn,

"The floor's open...."

Please specify which floor is open.

There are various types of floor:

  1. Sea
  2. Wooden
  3. Concrete
  4. Numbered
  5. Multi-level
  6. Mezzanine
  7. Pelvic
  8. Top
  9. Bottom
  • And more.....

It would narrow the scope of discussion, if you can specify which floor is opening....and to where....

Thank you.

Kind Regards....

From the CR4 FAQ's

Member titles are a fun way to track user participation on the site. The more posts you submit to CR4, the higher you'll rise along the following scale:

  • 0 - Browser
  • 1 - 4 Participant
  • 5 - 9 Member
  • 10 - 24 Active Contributor
  • 25 - 54 Associate
  • 55 - 99 Commentator
  • 100 - 499 Power-User
  • 500 - 999999 Guru

Beyond that, we really don't know (and we're kind of scared...).

This would be the definition we are discussing.

CR4 is just like any other source of "information" consider the source

There are definite fresh insights to be had from the mouths of babes

sometimes I throw out some stupid, less than informed commentary, just to focus the discussion. other times I'm just trying to learn

So, what do we do now?

Clink on the members name, do a background check the proof is in the posts.

Personally I like the pelvic floor.

Re: Guru ship

Johnjohn - happy new year!

IMHO "If it ain't broke..." Let's look at what we really have here.

  • I have yet to see a single post that really needed an expert, go unanswered or given a joking answered before the correct information was given. This includes electrical, chemical, civil, manufacturing, or any of the other engineering fields.
  • If someone gives an incorrect answer, the correct information comes quickly to the rescue.
  • If you do not want to view off topic posts, you can can make it so by the click of a box in your profile.
  • Certain somewhat nonsensical threads have popped up, but you are free to join in or not - whatever suits your pleasure.

I am assuming that on CR4 the title of "guru" really doesn't have a lot to do with your experience in a particular field of Engineering. Otherwise, upon joining, you would be handed your status after filling out a credentials form. Instead, I believe that the term "guru" as used here at CR4 is an acknowledgment that you have stuck with CR4 out of a sense of enjoyment, responsibility, ownership, and the desire to help others that are new to our site.

It means that you know the CR4 rules and can help others find their way. Furthermore, it shows an ability to know when to and how to direct questioners to other web sites or sources of information, know of other members that would be of help, and, especially, know when things are over your head and it would be better to remain silent.

Finally, the status of guru implies you have demonstrated your ability to play nicely and sanely with others. Any guru that allows themselves to be pulled into a flame war should be ashamed... Remember, guru=500 posts, but those are 500 long, grueling posts through which you learned many things about the rules, culture, personalities, and workings of CR4. 500 posts means you are a "CR4 Guru."

Odd, I also visualize the fuzz-ball as blue...subliminal, you think? And thank you very much for the nice scarf - tho' the patriotic thing would have been the r/w/b number, the intricate stitch pattern on the other intrigued me, so that's the one I saved.

Suppose vermin objected to having two knitting needles run thru his pseudoavatar?

I think the issue is just in the choice of words.

An improvement in the titles might be to use words that reflect how active or how long the person has been in CR4 like freshman, sophomore, junior or senior (shades of high school? ). The exact words used depends on the administrators of course.

The good answer score (GAS? ) should remain separate, IMHO. If you've been giving good answers, I think you should be recognized for it.

I could go with that.

Your grades are too American...the terms need to have international instant understanding, which is what the Team have tried to with what's here I think.

Perhaps an alternative is fresher, undergrad, post grad, post doc, prof, chancellor, and finally "Just how much time do you spend here" and "Do you any work?". Seriously, these titles are a bit of fun, and vermin (pet) has covered the other relevant points.

(so sophomores are younger than juniors? See I'm confused already!)

They were just suggestions and, yes, generally speaking, sophomores (second year of college/high school) are younger than juniors (next to the last year of college/high school). Of course if the person happens to be a 30 year old who returns to college then it's a different thing.

Actually I had to recheck my dictionary to make sure...

After reading and re-reading the posts here, I think I would be in favor of granting titles based on the ratio of good answers to posts. Then the title of "Guru" would be more appropriate.

Re: Guru ship

Well, what would motivate you to give good answers?

You can post and post, offering just conversation or wise-cracks without really answering questions. Your posting score increases and all it means is that you're very active.

CSM engineer, sparkstation, steve s, and dell are exceptional and should be models to follow.

In one forum for computers I visited once (experts-exhange), they had a team of experts. If you join, you can become one of their "problem solvers". People bring problems to them and whoever gives the best solution gets awarded points by the questioner. As far as I can tell, the number of posts have nothing to do with their ratings.

Now, that's how they do it but we don't have to copy. If you want to become a Guru, then give good answers. If you don't care for titles and such, then just post. If you get a good answer score then fine.

Just my 2¢.

Again, I have to raise the point that I have never seen a serious and complex question go immediately unanswered by a real expert.

Yes there are comedic answers and OTP answers, but these only appear after the question has been well answered by experts!!! So the credo and purpose of CR4 is always well upheld!!!

To be fair, your advice is usually more "straight from the horse's mouth" than from the nether regions...

Now here's a thought for those who are new to CR4

Write your ideas Re "Guruship" into this Forum Thread, and other Topics and Blogs too.

All ideas are interesting, providing kept within CR4 Rules, please click on the blue link below:

Are there specific rules for posting?

Some Members and Guests are more interested in certain subjects, others like a "wider scope for discussion".

That small effort of sharing your ideas, will grant you an extra click on your Posts Counter

When you have 500 effective Posts clocked up, added a pinch of humour, soothed ruffled feathers, not flamed or , and generally been kind and helpful to others, you wait with bated breath, and somewhere in the CR4 Software gears things happen, and you find your Member Title automatically gets the Guru description.

That of course, is not the time to sit on one's laurels or decide to take a tropical island holiday

The noble Title of Guru bringeth greater responsibility to add a bit of along with some and more assistance to those needing it.

Just my thoughts, and of course I get another click on my , so could you, if you reply.....

Kind Regards....

Kudos for the graphics, but several negative for placement. Might I recommend a small book called "Guerrilla Graphic Arts." It's a quick and easy way to learn the most important dos-and-don'ts of the graphics world.

Re: Guruship

Hello vermin,

Thank you for your considered advice.

I place graphics where they look OK on my Monitor at the actual resolution I am presently using.

I have not used a selection of Monitor sizes and resolutions to check the finished Post.

It does also depend on one's Graphics Card, as well as the actual web Browser used, and the further text size plus other settings in that Browser.

Then the CR4 Forum Editor Box alters things once again....where will all this altering stop....

The only way which things would not alter once the Post leaves my Computer here, far away, is to put the Post Entry in an "Adobe Acrobat/Reader" Format, or similar Portable Document Format.

There are two immediate problems with that:

  1. Not all use such utility Applications
  2. CR4 Forum Software does not allow the usage of such Formats.

However, never let it be said that I'm ungracious, perish the thought, nay, please do not contemplate such a horrible idea.

So...I am always willing to learn new ideas, try and eliminate "negative placement", and modify my erstwhile apparent bad habits.

Letter follows:

Dear vermin,

It is soon my Birthday, and if you send my 2008 gift, as the book: "Guerrilla Graphic Arts.", then I shall be truly grateful.

Please PM me for my address, to which you may Post my Birthday Gift.

Thanks ever so, and the gift will be acknowledged here at CR4 Forum, on its safe arrival.

Yours Sincerely

SparkY

Kind Regards....

I like it! Great concept - if I hadn't been involved in a similar "ring forum" some years ago, I'd have been confused when I first found this place. A brief intro like that might be more than useful for some folks.

Since I seem to have gotten here first, I'll reply for the fuzz-ball - prudes are known as blue-noses. Those who are scandalized by the thought that someone, somewhere, might be having a good time... For SHAME!

Re: Guruship

This thread is overlapping considerably with this thread.

The below is my reply to one of Blink's posts...
Now seeing as 'Good answers' are being given away like confetti on this thread...maybe Me 'n Ken deserve some too? , pretty please..I dun a pretty link thingy too...

"Ah yes... exactly...what we need is a drivel quality measurement system (DQMS).
Then we should factor in a brevity quotient (BrevQuot).

Another problem is guests who thank one personally but don't rate the good answer. Like this brief thread, so... maybe compulsory tracking down of guests and force them to rate the answers by showing them endless repeats of 'I Love Lucy'?

Anyhow gota go before I blow up the DQMS and exceed my BrevQuot"

Del

So far no-one has even mentioned that other stable of CR4 life - use of correct English grammar and the correcting of punctuation mistakes.

Whilst I realise that the non-native English speakers would be at a disadvantage...PMSL, that's nonsense - at least half of them write better English than us native speakers...it would provide an education point to those who wish to improve their use of what is rapidly becoming the modern day lingua franca.

And STL and I could have a great time...
