Chocolate

What is the CR4 readership's favourite chocolate confection (please illustrate with pictures), and why?

A 'Standard British Bath' is 100 litres. This will only rise to about 4 or 5 ", but will just about serve your purpose (I'm only guessing ! ). The standard needs revising methinks. I don't recommend Iron/Steel baths, since you may become 'set' in the thing as the chocolate cools and solidifies rapidly (Somebody told me , OK !). Subsequent news reports leaked by the Fire-Brigade may be embarrassing.

Re: Chocolate

Well, here you are not justified to say so. (See, I did not dare to call you wrong) Just because you and few others like only dark and balck and ugly looking chocolate, does not mean that you can call the people who like white chocolate names of not good choice. We all like different things and in some cases the same thing is not liked in different forms. Like I sometimes would eat few spoonful of cole slaw but I never eat the vege it is made of. I like raisins in ther cereal but do not like cooked raisins in the cake or bread. Sometimes I will drink Coco, Chocolate or Ovaltine but do not like to eat chocolate ice cream or chocolate cake if it is black. I know some people who do not like to drink any alcohol in plastic glass. It has to be a glass glass. When I used to drink Soda, I only drank in glass bottles as when cold glass touches your lips, the taste is better than aluminum or plastic. Many people will confirm that on this thread as I know many people who do the same as I do. Would you call them wierd? Off course not. They are just different.

People are diffeent and their likings are diffeent, No one is wrong or right and no likings are wrong or right - just different.

If you take survey of the participants in this thread, you fill find many who like white chocolate also. So would you call all those people names or take the result as the proof that white chocolate is also chocolate and many people like it better that black.

You have a wonderful day or more correctly chocoful day.

Regards;

Nadeem Butt

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, yeah I miss the days of drinking cold soda from glass bottles. Aluminum and plastic taste strange compared to good ol' glass. Ya here that Coke... Bigger bottles please!!!

Re: Chocolate

As of Feb 23, 1983, I do not drink coke or any carbonated water. I was getting addicted to about 2-3 litre of pepsi, barq root beer and that day after about 3 litres, I said no more soda and so far I went cold on that stuff but I still remember the smell of freshly open glass bottle and the taste on my tongue but I do not long for it any more. Lots of juice of all kind and milk and plenty of water to keep myself hydarted.

Nadeem Saheb, Aap hazoroon saal jiyenge. You know Yogi Guru Ramdev has recommended Coke & Pepsi just for cleaning toilets not for drinking purpose. And there was lot of conterversy about this.Well you being Kashmiri ( I presume) will definately go for milk and fruits which I would also.By the way I being a Brahmin do not eat Non veg, do not drink, do not smoke, dont even eat paan. At 67 I am not having any problems as I take morning and evening walks and do yoga and pranayams for 1 hour.

Re: Chocolate

Slightly off the chocolate theme but, when I was young, my uncle owned a sweet shop where he made most of the sweets on the premises.

I was always fascinated to see him boiling up the sugar mixture in a large gas heated copper pan then pouring it onto a marble worktop to harden. The liquid was transparent & if he wanted to lose the transparency he would cut off a long thick strip & stretch it over a big aluminium hook that was fixed to the wall. He would keep looping & stretching it to entrap air bubbles & the sugar would gradually turn white.

He would add colours & flavours to the sugar then pass strips through a hand powered machine (something like a pasta machine) which had rollers in various patterns to form the sweet shapes.

I used to cycle half way across London to visit him on a regular basis.

Have you been into the Fudge Shops? They make the fudges on the premises, and have a large marble table on which they work the fudge - and they like you to watch.

The end product is delicious, but at about £2 a slice, a bit of a luxury. It was a regular haunt of mine when I was a student in the City of Bath, though

Yes, we have a shop locally, opened about a year or so ago where they make some sweets at the back of the shop & encourage people to watch.

I've also made fudge & other sweets at home, it's not that difficult. The only piece of equipment you might need to buy is a decent thermometer & the results are as good as the commercial product but a lot cheaper and much more fun.

I do not drink, but would that be something like adding alcohol (whichever you prefer) to jello, or gellatin of your choice? That is a favorite of MANY younger people that I know watch it wiggle and giggle and then get DRUNK ....

Re: Chocolate

Yes, but unfortunately only once to fudge factory and once to the chocolate factory. Fudge was in Luray Cavern, Virginia and we saw when we came out of the caverns and Chocolate factory in San Antonio, Texas. The first one was to make you mad and buy fudge and eat there specially the one with almond. The area was filled with aroma. I think it was like 6 or 8 dollars a pound. I think I ate about half a pound while touring the classic cars museum and did not eat any thing until we arrived in Washington, DC.

I still have the aroma in my head. Both chocolate and fudge were fantastic and I tasted the chocolate also (although as I said I am not crazy about chocolate, just white chocolate) just to get over the aroma and say, I tasted it, the chocolate.

Boy, the aroma of fresh pizza from the wood burning earthen hearth, the Pizza (that I had on the road from Bologna to Milan, Italy and I haven't found such pizza yet in USA), the fudge and the chocolate factory would make any one go crazy and eat as much as one can and pay the price later.

I hope you all are feeling hungry now and want to run out and buy the things I mentioned earlier. Bon Apetite. (Spelling?)

Regards;

Nadeem

Yes, we have one about 60 miles north of here where they carry out a copper kettle and sing a duet about fudge while they pour and screed it. Absolutely crazy and it sells the stuff! Course, it's good.

Re: Chocolate

The only chocolate I eat now is HEALTHY CHOCOLATE!

The company MXI has a patent on cold processing the raw cocoa so it maintains all the flavonals that make chocolate healthy! All other manufactures "Dutch" or cook the chocolate, which like cooking any food, destroys much of the goodness.

They had it tested at Brunswick Laboratories and the ORAC score was off the chart!

All natural, low fat, low sugar, makes it truly healthy.

I thought it was all hype when I heard of it, but tried it anyway. I have since not got a cold, my sore knee is gone, no more hemroirds, no core sores and others.

It is great was antioxidants can do for you!

No more candy bars!

'Nutella' sounds goooood too bad I'm allergic to soy. Contains soy lecithin. But I've got a Kitchen, and bet I can make my own.

Could call it Nutzilla after Japanese (Nipponjin) Godzirra (no Ls in Nihongo) means Whale lizard, all pun intended.

And now for something completely different.

Chocolate coated Nutella Bar. Mmmm. Even hides the taste of fur-ball medicine

Re: Chocolate

02/07/2008 5:31 AM

"The mythology of chocolate begins with the gods. And so it should. Was there ever a creation more heavenly, more divine? It is said that Quetzalcoatl, the supreme god of the Aztecs and Toltecs, bestowed the seeds of the cacao tree upon his grateful people. The result was xocolatl, a drink, but not merely a beverage. Ambrosia. An aphrodisiac. A fountain of strength and vigor. Its mystery and legend made it irresistible to the conquistador, Cortes. It was he who brought it to the courts of Europe in the sixteenth century.

The aristocracy embraced it. Chocolate became the frothy, intoxicating potion of noblemen. The taste delighted them. Their faith in its powers entranced them. Chocolate, they believed, infused them with vitality, sexuality, wisdom, and well-being. Some worried that chocolate was too voluptuous for the good of their souls. But no one abstained.

For sophisticated court belles and their beaux, chocolate insinuated the sensual, the amorous. Casanova was said to seduce with chocolate as often as with champagne. Chocolate spoke of love and passion. The courts of Europe floated on a cloud of chocolate desire.

There was more to come. Two hundred years later, Belgian chocolatiers created an even more sensuous experience. No longer merely a drink, chocolate became a confection to be savored on the tongue, held in the mouth as its silky richness melted into satisfaction.

History moves forward, but chocolate remains the essence of life's most yearned-for moments. The desire is no ordinary hunger. A craving for chocolate, as the nobles new, is a lust for life."

BTW, does anyone else doubt chocolate's efficacy for Valentine objectives in this weight-obsessed age?

Some one was inspired to take a inedible white alkaloid seed from a pod and ferment it then roast it then grind it.

Originally mixed with hot peppers and later sugar. Later yet further refined and milk added to the mix that was temper chilled.

Mysticism to alchemy to science creating nirvana in a bite.

Gotta love progress

Let's Not Suppress Thoughts of Chocolate

Suppressing thoughts - such as thoughts about eating chocolate - can lead people to engage in the very behavior they wish to avoid, according to a research project carried out at the University of Hertfordshire just outside London, England.

Researchers gathered 67 males and 67 females, with an average age of 22, and gave them specific topics to either think about or not think about. They were also given two brands of chocolate, and asked to perform a taste-preference test. Result: both males and females who were asked to suppress thoughts of chocolate ate significantly more than those in the control group.

This seemingly trivial experiment actually reveals a profound truth known to spiritual adepts throughout history: that nothing feeds desire like suppression. When thoughts are greeted as friends and allowed to come and go freely, they lose a great deal of their power to make us behave in compulsive ways. So go ahead and think about chocolate, and if you eat some (most likely a moderate amount, because you didn't suppress your thoughts!), make sure it's the dark variety. Look for at least 70 percent cocoa solids; this kind contains the most heart-protective flavanoids.

For a lot of people, it's all about 'mouth-feel', which is developed by 'conching' (You'll find this term explained if you follow through the link). Here is a more chemical type analysis. For more medicinal stuff, this may disturb some. The culinary roots are here. The chocolate mad may want to look here. Dogs be warned (don't let them eat onions either).

Nice to see you in Chocolate forum.

I hope you also like white chocolate.

I am getting people to say it loud and clear that they also like white chocolate beside that eye-hurting black, after taste bitterness in mouth dark chocolate. (We may be real and the best chocolate loving minority) I think white chocolate with almond is the blessings from the heavens. (but I still have to buy chocolate for the Valentine day celebration as it has now become a tradition in USA.

Hey JohnDG:

Sorry to hear the store being out of your favorite chocolate. The same thing happened to me. I used to love Cow's toffee that came from England and only walmart was selling them. I used to keep the jar full of it in my office and I had more visitors to stop by and get the toffee beside the discussions. Then some wise person decided to discontinue the product and now I am completely out of it but still have taste in my taste buds.

Thanks to be on my side to like white chocolate otherwise I was thinking I may be the only odd ball. I do not think this product, that you mentioned is available in the USA. We have other chocolate with rice crispies called KITKAT. That is also fairly good as the rice crispies hide the bitter after taste of black chocolate.

I shall look for the Filtrade White chocolate bar next time I am in the chocolate store.

Thanks for the hint.

Although I quite like bitter black chocolate (Lindt, Green & Blacks), I don't believe black chocolate needs to be bitter. Some people prefer Suchard's, which I would describe as bitter-sour (definitely not my favourite, but acceptable if there's nothing better).

Some Belgian chocolatier's bars (75% cocoa solids) give pure chocolate pleasure without the unnecessary bitterness. Worth the trip just for that (even if you don't like frites).

Re: Chocolate

I will tolerate no more of this anti dark drivel.

Dark chocolate is not all bitter. There are countless varieties of chocolate that are not white which are not bitter.

A true unsweetened or semisweet dark may be a bit bitter for some. However, the majority of chocolate is smooth sweet and delicious. Bold in it's richness. Discernible as fine wines or good cheeses. Truly an artisans work of passion.

White chocolate is timid and absent of character. It is boring to look at and more boring to eat. It is a shame that it should even be called chocolate - what an insult. The blush Zinfandel of chocolates

So for the so called white chocolate - phooey! You may enjoy your weak-kneed milk toast chocolate all you wish. But enough of the anti dark rhetoric.

Or would you rather we take up fondue pots at fifty paces.

Re: Chocolate

I am not a chocolate hater or critic. I walk the line and stay listed slightly towards the white or milk chocolate and like it better that way. Sometimes I eat KitKat with rice crispies. I buy a bar at the check out counter if I go the stores. I drink chocolate with lots of milk in it. So, you see, I am not a chocolate hater of dark chocolate, I just do not like bitter taste. I do not dislike or get angry with the people with different opinions and call them names. Let us be friendly.

You have a wonderful and chocoful day.

Got it. LOL.

You would not believe this. One of the coworked just came in and brought Valentine day cookies that she baked. I took one of each kind (two in total) and the one which was big has a dark chocolate layer at the bottom and I am eating it right now and writing to you that I am eating dark chocolate with sugar cookie. It has a bitter aftertaste but I will eat it with pleasure to keep fellow Texan happy.

Enjoy your day.

Hey, c'mon, grow up. we are socialized people love white choclate and do not call other people names. By the way, what is wrong in liking white chocolate any way? I guess you just can't handle the white color, sweet taste and smooth texture of the product.

You have a wonderful chocoful day.

Re: Chocolate

I have to admit that I prefer Dark Bitter chocolate to both white and milk. But I eat it very rarely nowadays, less than once a month.....

My youngest daughter (22) is the same, but my wife and eldest daughter (24) both prefer milk. (they all eat chocolate more often than I do!!)

My mother was a great eater of dark, bitter chocolate, you could not even give her as a present of milk chocolate in any form or shape! So maybe its a "genes thing"......(or a "Jeans thing?")

I prefer the Bounty bar in red/white packing to blue/white (dark against milk chocolate), but you rarely find the red here in Germany......I used to buy about one a month in the UK when driving and hungry with no time to eat, really great!!!

Checkout the following link where you will also see this picture:-

Hi Nadeem - the label said it was chocolate. Imagine the weird taste surprise if you suddenly got a taste of cheese ! Just checked, and found this. .

I'm omnichocolic, and my only aversion is to 'inclusions' other than rum-soaked raisins. Air bubbles are OK, but I'm not sure they are exactly 'inclusions'. Fondant style fillings are a waste of valuable chocolate space. Cheesy fondues don't really rock my boat (I prefer it in chunks with pickled onions etc).

Kris:

Thanks for sharing the the article under "THIS". How did you know thatI was trying to lose weight. errrr, not trying to lose but to reduce. Reduce weight because if I lose, I may find it again along the way. I shall print it out and read carefully to take the benefit of the write up. Inactivity after all day long in the refinery and then 10 months in the hotel room made me about 10 lbs heavier in about 10 months. Now that I am in the apartmnet, the weight increase has come down to a screeching halt and within last fortnight, I have reduced 4 pounds. Booy, every bit off, helps.

I still like occasional chocolate bar to keep my taste buds acquainted with the taste of the chocolate, mostly white and then I will go for KITKAT or light kind or chocolate drink made will all milk and sugar. It is still atsty no matter what form or shape that comes in contact with my lips and the tongue and palate.

Once again, thanks for the artcle.

Regards;

Nadeem

Re: Chocolate

02/14/2008 4:24 PM

It must be coincidence-happenstance thing Nadeem. On an impulse I checked out chocolate + cheese on google and found that site. I never noticed it had a header about diets ! LOL. It's truly strange how things happen. Sounds like you had a stint away from home, stuck in a hotel. That would send most peoples weight upwards. It's not so bad if you have long shifts (ie work/sleep/work/sleep etc), but killing time whilst living out of a suitcase is bad news. Sounds like your mind-set is attuned to sensible eating though, so hopefully you'll catch up on your desired weight and still be able to enjoy the pleasures of chocolate. There is a saying (not sure if it's used outside the UK) ; "A little of what you fancy does you good". I think there's a fair bit of truth in it. As pointed out by yourself and others, being happy in ones own skin (another saying) and enjoying pleasure in moderation is the best recipe. Chocolate, or anything else, every day wouldn't be so much fun.

Great idea (not). Pure chocolate would be much better. Only consider the effects on Taiwanese life-expectancy of adding further high-cholesterol foods to their already high-salt diet.

Hey, hey, Sharma Ji:

Not all Americans are fat or obese. We enjoy life and have the knack for it. Then we all grow up from all sides in every direction and die with the complications of obesity, lung cancer because we love smoking and attack other countries to bring peace on earth.

Yes, we have sweet tooth for all the wrong things and that is experience to have done it rather not doing any thing. We love oil and would excahnge for blood of our innocent children of 18 and 19 years old that the recruiter allured them from the high school.

Any way, we love life and that is why we have best comedy programs on air and what we lack we steal from UK TV channels and change it s little and call it of our own. We are creative in stealing other people's ideas and nmaking it of our own. Same thing we will do worldwide to steal the nations as long as we can get hold of their oil. We have done it and we will keep on doing until the entire world is ours.

You can call any thing you want, just do not call us fat or obese. We may be all of the above but not fat or obese. Period. LOL.

Any way, chocolate is good and by this thread we found out that there are people who like white chocolate and some dark and some none. And there are people who think that the people who like white chocolate are sissy and call them other names as well. It was so intersting to see what people are thinking and read their opinions with interest and one amuses himself. (Himself as there were no ladies who read this kind of threads although would love to receive chocolate and especialy today.

Regards;

Nadeem

Nadeem Shab, Well you can enjoy life but not at the cost of your health. It is better to control your desires and "Eat to Live rather than Live to eat". I will recite a stanza from Sikh holy book "Jitani Kushian Manana Utna Bhogna Rog" it transaltes like this "If you Enjoy more the more you suffer from diseases". If you eat more unhealthy food you will be sick. If you drink more, more you will be sick. Well I am not a preist to teach people but it is upto everyone to maintain their body in good shape.

Suresh -

Let me counter with a few lines from a different Holy Book. When King Solomon was writing the Proverbs, he didn't know about chocolate, but these are his views on honey:

"Eat honey, my son, for it is good" (Chapter 24, verse 13)

"It is not good to eat too much honey" (Chapter 25, verse 27)

"If you find honey, eat just enough -- too much of it, and you will vomit." (Ch25:v16)

So he's saying: If it's good, eat it! Just not too much.

Life is about compromises - even good things must be consumed in moderation: Chocolate for Your Valentine

Giving chocolate on this Valentine's Day can help keep love alive - and the lovers, as well. The evidence is growing that dark chocolate, in moderate amounts, conveys several health benefits, and the latest good news is that regular intake appears to lower blood pressure.

Between January 2005 and December 2006, 44 hypertensive German volunteers, ages 55 to 75 and in otherwise good health, took part in an 18-week study. About half were randomly assigned to eat 6.3 grams daily of dark chocolate; the other half ate a 5.6 gram portion of white chocolate. By the end of the test period, the participants eating dark chocolate had statistically significant reductions in blood pressure (systolic pressure declined by a mean of 2.4 mm Hg, diastolic by 1.3 mm Hg). In the white chocolate group, blood pressure remained unchanged. Researchers speculated that the difference was due to the 30 mg of polyphenols in each dark chocolate "dose"; the white chocolate was polyphenol-free.

The lesson here is not to gorge on dark chocolate: 6.3 grams is less than one-quarter of an ounce, and eating more of this calorie-dense food could lead to unwanted weight gain. But a little dark chocolate daily does indeed appear to be a healthful treat.

Thanks Jaan for your thoughtfulness. I read the health benefits, Yes, I keep the moderation in view and the moderation is NEVER more than one bar. Today I had the home baked cookies with Black chocolate at the bottom that one coworker baked and brought in. We all thanked her for her efforts.

I do not not think my love is so cheap to keep alive artificiallay with one package of chocolate. Few ounces of 22/24 Carat gold may be. That was Christmas heartache.

Weeks before the event I start getting hints as to what she likes to have. I never buy her any thing and I ask her how much that thing costs? Upon her response I give her the cash to go and buy yourself. Usually after that I stay home and she buys whatever she wants. It is so peaceful and no hassle whatsoever and I keep away from helping her to make up her mind when she has to make a choice between the two. I say, oh, no lady, I am not going to fall in that trap again. It doesd not matter what I say or like she always longs for the one that we did not buy. I used to end up buying two things because she was so indecisive and now I learnt my lesson to stay out of her buying spree. It is better to pay the bills than to get involved in the selection process. I am quite sure lots of people (May be after Valentine day) will agree with me. Usually I end up with much more expenses than the flowers, chocolate and dinner and movie combined. I skip all that and she gets what she wants. I even do not get shoe laces or handkerchiefs for any festival or holidays. Poor men and I am one of them. I am quite sure there are others with the similar experience.

Ok, it is time to go home.

Regards;

Nadeem

That sort of love is not merely cheap - it is completely valueless. Love that thrives on kindness and thoughtfulness (which can include a small package of chocolate at an appropriate time) is a different matter.

I know. I understand you perfectly. I am doing this since last 23 years and June 11 will be 24th. One does not understand women and we do it because there is no other way to make them understand that there is a limit to the income and expenditure. So, I resigned to do whatever you want to do and pay the bills quietly and keep the home atmosphere artificially quiet and I knw when and if I say NO to some thing, it will burst so better keep quiet. Now your comments where is the love or what kind of love, beats me.

Dear Jaan, Yesterday I read in newspaper that eventhough chocolate is good for heart but it causes porosity of bones. It excreates calcium from the bones. This finding is from none other than a American University. It can also lead to oestoporosity of bones which means your bones can become brittle and crack if you have accidental fall. Well I am not against the Sweet Posion Black or White but it should be taken in limited way more particularly by Sr.Citizens.

Dear Suresh,

I read the same study, could be in our newspaper or in a health newsletter. Therefore I stressed the moderation. It is true for other foods and supplements as well - they can be beneficial for one person but detrimental for another. In this case knowledge can be power. Suresh, do you know that Omega-3 fatty acids are good for the heart, the brain and, it now appears, the bones too?

The study in question does not PROVE a link, it only SUGGESTS one. The popular press may scream that chocolate hurts your bones, but here's what the medical press has to say about it:

"The research behind this claim is a cross-sectional study, which by virtue of its design, cannot prove that chocolate consumption causes low bone density in women. Other diet, lifestyle, or environmental factors could have caused the decreased bone density. This finding was also only in women over 70 and so cannot apply to younger women or men. Studies with more robust designs would be needed to confirm this association. ... Until prospective studies confirm a harmful link between chocolate consumption and bone health, women should not be unduly concerned by the results of this study. Because of its high fat and sugar content, chocolate should be consumed in sensible amounts." -- http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/95208.php

Personally, I eat lots of chocolate, and my bone density is 50% HIGHER than normal. (In a swimming pool, I can't float at all! Truth.)

Your optimism in regard of your bone density may be well-placed, but flotation is not in itself a very good indicator of bone density. Typically, the skeleton comprises up to about 20% of body mass, and the density range of healthy bones is in the order of 15%, giving a maximum 3% effect on total body density. Flotation is more generally regarded as an indicator of your level of body fat, which has a specific gravity of 0.9 and ranges from about 3% upwards (usually slightly higher for females). Be aware that there can be a correlation between being excessively thin in early life and later onset of osteoporosis.

Maybe Astronut had a bone density test, like one of these DEXA scans. 50 % above average bone density does sound a bit high though. I have to take Calcium & Ergocalciferol, to counter depletion caused by something else. I've never broken an arm/leg in my life (despite some fairly severe knocks), and I can't think of anyone in my family who has.

I have never been thin, much less "excessively" so, but even as a chubby teen I could lie motionless on the bottom of the pool. Freaky. I had often wondered whether my inability to float was a bone density thing, and it was confirmed this year by a DEXA scan. (They test EVERYTHING when you start getting older.) But "50% above normal" really amazed me!

The only bone I ever broke was in my "pinkie" toe - I was maybe six or seven years old. My brother and I were racing barefoot up the stairs, both in an urgent hurry to use the bathroom, and I stubbed my toe on his heel. I lost the race, but didn't disgrace myself, as the pain of the toe suddenly made other matters irrelevant...

This could make for a whole interesting thread on it's own. I can manage floating on the bottom if I exhale deeply. I've never had a bone-density scan, and can't even recall my BMI last time I checked ( I think it was well within the 'Healthy' range, though there is dispute over the validity of such measures). I'm tempted to fully immerse myself in a bath to work out my volume, then try and do some density type calculations. It could be an interesting discussion if others did similar. We could all compare our density and BMI - I don't recall ever having seen the two compared. What think ye ?

"I'm tempted to fully immerse myself in a bath to work out my volume"

I'd need to find a bigger bath first.

I have the same problem, but I reckon I was born with it, I am sure that its nothing to do with Chocolate.....or swimming pools around the world would be choked with drowning chocolate lovers!

I cannot float in fresh water swimming pools, I even have problems in some Seas and Oceans......The eastern Mediterranean is so salty I almost have no problem at all as is the sea in some areas off western Australia, Perth to be exact!

I was refused to be allowed to be a RN Diver as I did not need any extra weights to keep me down.....in the 100 foot submarine school diving tower at HMS Vernon, nobody believed me that I do not float and as you are NOT allowed to assist yourself to the surface in any way shape or form, so I had to be assisted!!!! That did cause some consternation at the time!!! Luckily I had already set the problem up in my head and guessed at what they would do......you have so much compressed air in your lungs, that breathing is not a problem for quite a long time!!
