Picture Challenge: Uncommon Item, Common Name

04/26/2008 11:24 PM

I use this item, and 3 others that are similar, on a daily basis. I apologize for the quality of the pictures, I took them at close range with a camera phone.

The object is cylindrical in shape, with a slot along one side, and the ends partially closed off. The material is a plastic that is slightly flexible. It is used in conjunction with common items. The color is a clue, and is the last clue I will give.

Geez, at least give us SOMETHING! Rough estimate of size? Shot "close range with a camera phone" could make them an inch tall, or six inches tall.
And, your definition of "common items" almost certainly different than many others reading this thread.

Size would definitely give it away! Oh, well, the background is my computer.

The word "common" is an important clue, if your knowledge of US history is "great".

The background looks like a peg board. that makes the object small.

I would go for a battery clip for the name and used to bind cables together.

It looks like some sort of pipe clip to keep a hot pipe away from your paws.
Or a protector for some sort of cylindrical object..
Maybe a sardine protector?

Hello 3Doug

I'm taking a guess here, because there is no size indication, as has been mentioned by others, also the extreme fuzziness makes proper identification difficult.

You refer to "this item", but there are 3 similar items shown, all slightly different colours.

They are protective covers for safety razors, to cover the blades while the razor is not in use.

That's my best shot.

Kind Regards....

Three pictures of the same item.

Someone has come close on the what the item is, but no guesses on yet on the name.

The object in question is a "coin wrapper". Instead of being made from paper, these are made from plastic and are reusable. The banks here handed them out years ago to business folk.

Never heard of a coin wrapper before???

I was going to suggest that they could be used forcarrier bags... you know when you carry a full carrier bag the handles dig into your hands painfully, with one of these over the carrier bag handles they wouldn't dig in so much and make carrying them more easy...

Not sure if you are being facetious, so I'll take a chance. LOL...

Coin wrappers are used to "roll" coins to take them to the bank. The red one pictured above is more then likely for "pennies" or the Canadian and American 1 cent piece.

And if you were being facetious... sorry. hehehe...

Oh you mean they hold the coins in a stack for convenience?

I thought the banks used some sort of plastic wrapping and customers used plastic bags.. well they used to!!

It's just a reddish common fuse remover. Clip on pull out sort of thing. Or it could be a cable length measuring device for people with a too short tape measure. Place it were the tape measure runs out and start again with out marking the cable. Well, maybe not.

They are Change counters. You fill them up with Pennies, Dimes,Nickels & Quarters. Then put the change in paper rolls to take to the bank.

Guess I should have read all the response first. A couple of you already said coin counters.

Re: Picture Challenge: Uncommon Item, Common Name

Well, I'll end part of the suspense. They are coin holders that hold enough for a roll. The one in the pictures is red because coin wrappers for pennies are red. I have a blue one for nickels, a green one for dimes, and an orange one for quarters.

Pennies are common items. American pennies bear the image of Abraham Lincoln, one of our greatest presidents. His image was chosen for the penny because he was known as "The Great Commoner."

These holders are covered by US patent #4095608. You can see the patent abstract with illustrations at:

http://www.google.com/patents?id=Z3I1AAAAEBAJ&printsec=abstract&zoom=4#PPA1,M1

I'm still looking for someone to give me the brand name for this particular one. The name is a common "name", or rather a nickname given to someone who might make excessive use of this item.

Then I'll get to work on another picture challenge.

I didn't stand a chance here, in the UK coins go into plastic bags before being emptied into coin counting machines.

What, something like "penny pincher"? OK, but then it would be "nickle nabber", "dime dangler" and "quarter catcher" or somesuch nonsense. "Change miser" maybe? "Coin catcher"? 'Fess up! I'm starting to babble here...

You got it!

Again I apologize for the picture being fuzzy, and I had to rotate it to get the name oriented the right way.

The other items are Nickel Pincher, Dime Pincher and Quarter Pincher. Not poetic, I know, but descriptive of how they work. Of course, when I fill one up, I have to transfer the coins to paper wrappers.

You and the others who made correct guesses are free to reward yourselves as you see fit. Unfortunately, I can only offer to entertain you with a poem:

When I am out walking,
And I see a quarter, nickel, penny or dime,
I will stop and pick it up
Each and every time.

If you think I am foolish,
And my actions are not wise;
Well, I do save my change,
And I can always use the exercise!

You in the US are way behind, if the banks still use that old technology: clips to hold a stack of coins.

Here coin counting machines are used, and pre-counted amounts loaded into ziplock plastic bags, same as mentioned by Electroman: http://cr4.globalspec.com/comment/217807/Re-Picture-Challenge-Uncommon-Item-Common-Name

Kind Regards....

These devices were never meant for commercial application. They were handed out by the banks here in Canada, at least where I lived, for a short time and were sold in the dollar stores. They were meant for people to use when they cashed in their "Piggy Banks".

Banks don't use them. Private citizens do. US banks do have automatic coin sorting and counting machines. I believe they even have machines that can count paper money.

I went to cash in some rolled change for paper at a bank, and the teller fed my rolls into a coin counting machine to confirm they rolls had the right number of coins in them.

I was at a fast-food joint picking up an order for a friend while on the way to the bowling alley the other evening, and the manager was counting paper money in one of the cash drawers. He was using an electronic scale to weigh the stacks of bills in each denomination. Apparently we have now migrated to the "pound" system that our Brit compatriots just abandoned...

Sterling is still the official currency, euros can be used but there is still massive opposition to the euro replacing the pound. We're still resisting the conversion to metric units in some area although it is in common use. Road signs are still in miles, loose goods can still be sold in pounds although pre-packed goods must be marked in kilos/litres etc.

Our banks used to (and some still do) use paper wrappers. Now most of them use a thin plastic tube that resembles a sausage casing - or big electric cable shrink wrap.
