Why So Many Guests?

01/14/2009 10:52 PM

I have enjoyed hanging out on CR4 for a good while. Lately it seems that in a Thread there are an awful lot of "Guests". I myself like it that I have grown to know some posters by their CR4 names. The CR4 site is well set up so that you do not have to have any other identity other than the one you might represent with an avatar name, and allows for further anonymity whereby a member can choose to post anonymously. But when half or more of the participants in a discussion are "Guests", I wonder if there is something wrong, or lightweight of me to participate in that thread. Overtime I have discovered that some members know more about a particular subject than I do, and have no shame at all about saying so. It is not as if I don't myself know a few things. Anyway this is an internal to CR4 wonder, and I wonder if other members have noticed and have any insights.

There are so many guests because Disney invited them in Beauty and the Beast:

Lumiere:
Ma chere Mademoiselle, it is with deepest pride
and greatest pleasure that we welcome you tonight.
And now we invite you to relax, let us pull up a
chair as the dining room proudly presents -
your dinner!

Be our guest! Be our guest!
Put our service to the test
Tie your napkin 'round your neck, cherie
And we'll provide the rest
Soup du jour
Hot hors d'oeuvres
Why, we only live to serve
Try the grey stuff
Chip:
It's delicious
Lumiere:
Don't believe me? Ask the dishes
They can sing, they can dance
After all, Miss, this is France
And a dinner here is never second best
Go on, unfold your menu
Take a glance and then you'll
Be our guest
Oui, our guest
Be our guest!
Lumiere and Chorus:
Beef ragout
Cheese souffle
Pie and pudding "en flambe"
Lumiere:
We'll prepare and serve with flair
A culinary cabaret!
You're alone
And you're scared
But the banquet's all prepared
No one's gloomy or complaining
While the flatware's entertaining
We tell jokes! I do tricks
With my fellow candlesticks
Chorus:
And it's all in perfect taste
That you can bet
Come on and lift your glass
You've won your own free pass
To be out guest
Lumiere:
If you're stressed
It's fine dining we suggest

Chorus:
Be our guest! Be our guest! Be our guest!
Get your worries off your chest
Let us say for your entree
We've an array; may we suggest:
Try the bread! Try the soup!
When the croutons loop de loop
It's a treat for any dinner
Don't belive me? Ask the china
Singing pork! Dancing veal!
What an entertaining meal!
How could anyone be gloomy and depressed?
We'll make you shout "encore!"
And send us out for more
So, be our guest!
Lumiere:
Be our guest!
Chorus:
Be our guest!
Mrs Potts:
It's a guest! It's a guest!
Sakes alive, well I'll be blessed!
Wine's been poured and thank the Lord
I've had the napkins freshly pressed
With dessert, she'll want tea
And my dear that's fine with me
While the cups do their soft-shoein'
I'll be bubbling, I'll be brewing
I'll get warm, piping hot
Heaven's sakes! Is that a spot?
Clean it up! We want the company impressed
Chorus:
We've got a lot to do!
Mrs Potts:
Is it one lump or two?
For you, our guest!
Chorus:
She's our guest!
Mrs Potts:
She's our guest!
Chorus:
She's our guest!
Be our guest! Be our guest! Be our guest!
Lumiere:
Life is so unnerving
For a servant who's not serving
He's not whole without a soul to wait upon
Ah, those good old days when we were useful...
Suddenly those good old days are gone
Ten years we've been rusting
Needing so much more than dusting
Needing exercise, a chance to use our skills!
Most days we just lay around the castle
Flabby, fat and lazy
You walked in and oops-a-daisy!
Chorus:
Be our guest! Be our guest!
Our command is your request
It's been years since we've had anybody here
And we're obsessed
With your meal, with your ease
Yes, indeed, we aim to please
While the candlelight's still glowing
Let us help you, We'll keep going
Course by course, one by one
'Til you shout, "Enough! I'm done!"
Then we'll sing you off to sleep as you digest
Tonight you'll prop your feet up
But for now, let's eat up
Be our guest!
Be our guest!
Be our guest!
Please, be our guest!

So let us get this right. In order to be an engineer you have to have the ability to cut and paste.

Wow, it is truly amazing. Its no wonder the world is collapsing in upon itself. Accountants are the only group of professionals, engineers can hardly be called professionals, afterall the grease monkey who services my cars (note the plural use of car here for all you dumb ass engineers) calls himself an engineer.

Notice how my post was humorous, but your response was rude and not humorous?

See, in comedy, a reference (like I made) can be used to simultaneously remind the reader of something cute (Disney movie) and also entertain.

The specific term for the usage here is "comic irony", especially of the type tending toward the absurd.

I realize that this is clearly lost on you. However, next time you want to flame my posts and imply that by use of cut and paste, I am somehow a grease monkey who services your car, you may consider doing something else - somewhere else- instead.

If the community here is to be forced to read your nonsensical ranting, at least strive to keep it to an acceptable level of comedy. In the above you have only managed to fail. Miserably.

You are correct but we managed to get a response out of you. Now, if engineers were actually clever (hang on a minute while we pick ourselves up from the floor from the laughter at the thought of this prospect) then you would not post any responses to our posts.

It really quite simple, we control your every move and we decide in which direction you will go - this is both true in the workplace and on this forum. This will be hard for you to take on board but we believe that when you actually think about it (after scratching yourselves - favourite passtime of an engineer ) you will agree.

We see that the off topic button is checked so we will uncheck it - is that OK with our little pets?

We have a bet going that some muppett will respond to this post - any takers?

I'll take...your bet means nothing to me.

This thread is so surreal...in our organization, the accountants answer to the engineers (as do the salesmen). Who would ever put a profession not responsible for producing anything of value in charge of anything? I suspect you harbour a severe inadequacy complex or some other dysfunction that fuels your hostility toward individuals you have never met. You have my pity.

Please explain the significance of this statement. Every living organism responds to external influences in one manner or another. In what way is the stimulus provided by you more significant than any other? While I agree that your posts on this thread have influenced me to reply, it is only out of a sense of transient curiosity and amusement. So at this point, let me thank you for serving my needs and providing me with some limited entertainment.

You truly do not see the relevance in this do you? You are like a puppet muppet on a string and we are controlling the strings. What is needed is that you stop responding to these posts, which are clearly designed to antagonise and to illicit a response. The type of response does not matter.

This is about control and being able to exercise that. In order to have success you need to show control, whether on this site or in the work place.

Hopefully you all have learned a valuable lesson from this thread.

Just give us a GA and we will accept that as thanks for educating you. We are somewhat hurt that no one has even voted a GA on any of our posts - can anyone explain why this is?

I appreciate what your saying, but I don't subscribe to the belief that ignoring these sort of things is the best approach. I've been in many forums, and as well received that suggestion is, I've never actually seen it work. If I have something to say to them I say it. If I get tire or aggravated I stop talking to them. It's the best approach. I just think if someone is acting like a fool, and you never bother to tell them, at least once, then they may never truly understand the situation. They end up thinking their clever for doing what my 2 year old nephew banging pots together for an hour does, making noise that I just tune out.

Hi Roger

I think you're being a bit delusional.

That comes with the territory Mate. These drug induced comments (if you can call them that) have only a fun factor. No meaning, no result, no Eff all. A giggle here and there, or maybe only the illusion of it.

Reverse Psychology, executed by drugged up kids can only result in fear. Not fear of the unknown but the fear of knowing nothing and bragging with it and being cought out in the end. When ever that might be....

I am surprised that I am still responding. A bit like walking away from a drowning person. Being our brothers keeper comes to mind.

I hope the stuff they/he are taking will wear off rather sooner than later. At least they will not have to apologize or be punished for this childish behavior, they are only Guest's.

I like when things go full circle, Ky.

Yeah, you're right, but it just isn't me, and if someone is acting like a fool, I feel like I should tell them, even if it's only once, just for their own sake. Lets face it, we've all been the fool at one time or the other and we thought we were being clever. May I offer a suggestion to you all, now and in the future, to avoid making any remarks to those annoying, off topic, truly childish and obviously non professionals. Banter with those types of guests is a waste of time and effort. Why even remotely try to converse much less try and convince them in any intelligent conversation? Ignoring their comments completely gives them no more motivation to continue. Besides it's painful to see my otherwise intelligent colleges stoup to their level. We have time better spent on topics that share important information that help others and ourselves. Please don't allowy your pride or ego to fuel your rebutles.

This is absolutely correct. It is unfortunate that their are not more people like you on this site or in the world. You saw through our ploy straight away and you must be given credit for that. Regardless of the quality of the response we were never going to enter into any form of intelligent conversation.

"Ignoring their comments completely gives them no more motivation to continue" - a truer word was never said.

We have clearly stated that our aim was to get a response and thus far we have not been disappointed.

Again well done for being one of the few clever members on this forum. We have marked this comment off topic as a mark of respect to you.

I'll never understand why this sort of thing is mistaken for cleverness or intelligence. It's not an issue of cleverness, it's an issue of morality and empathy. Anyone can antagonize people, it's easy, just like anyone can kill anyone else if they really wanted to. Doing so doesn't make one clever or intelligent, it just means you're broken. There's something wrong with your moral and empathy section of your brain that makes you delight in things most humans find repulsive.

Also "ignoring" is never really a solution to anything, no matter how noble it sounds.

Re: Why So Many Guests?

Dear Guest,

First of all let me say that I'm enjoying having a guest speak in plural. I think you should take it a step further and go third person by saying stuff like this:

"Guest has clearly stated that Guests aim.............Guest is disappointed in you"

That would really be great if you would do that for us (I think I may start posting in plural too).

Second, who cares what your aim is? I mean, do you even care really? I respect Jorrie because he can teach me about relativity, and I respect Steve S because he travels the world, and I respect Enviroman for the many discussions we've had on threads, and even Physicist? who I find argumentative (just like myself) but most definitely intelligent and worth reading. Europium, Del the cat, Electroman, Yuval, Milo, and many others I don't have space to list here I find engaging and enjoyable and rewarding to interact with. Even some guests. I'll do what I want, respond to you, don't respond to you, who cares?

Third, you have a lot of rules about responding and when people can and cannot supposedly "lower" themselves to your level, whatever that means. I would probably be better able to at least attempt to follow your rules if you wrote a rulebook. You could call it "The Annoying Guest Game Handbook" or "The Troll Handbook". I would appreciate it if you wrote this in third person as well, or at the very least continue to speak in plurals.

Finally (Fourth), and most importantly, you will never, ever, ever, be as clever as Del the cat. No matter what you do, no matter what you say, nothing will be as clever as having an entire community accept you as the forum's house cat even though the very concept doesn't make any sense even remotely. If you want clever (or crazy, or both, or maybe he's really a cat, I just don't know anymore), Del's your cat.

Sincerely,

Roger Pink

OK.

Guest wrote in plural due to the combined minds of the individual persons posing as Guest. Guest would feel it inappropriate to take all the credit for getting you upset and spilling your engine oil all over your bed - as a side note: Guest does wonder what you are doing with engine oil in bed but perhaps this is just another favourite pastime of said engineer.

Guest would really appreciate it if you would not respond to Guests posts. Guest has stated that the aim of Guest is to get a response and you have not disappointed the said Guest. Guest thanks you for that.

Guest does feel somewhat sorry for you, all the name dropping of these Gurus does not impress Guest. Guest hopes that you receive lots of birthday cards from your new colleagues.

Has Guest made Guests point clear enough for you to understand or should Guest draw you a nice simple picture?

Also, I just want you to know that despite everything I've said above, I really admire you and everyone else on CR4, think you're all very intelligent, and find your discussions engaging.

You see, this is why I need a rulebook, your last the statement above is confusing.

Re: Why So Many Guests?

Boy, sort of wow. I'm about tempted to check the I want to post anonymously box up there on the right. Ben Franklin said that it was legitimate in some cases where otherwise the truth could not be told, to write anonymously. So I am inclined myself to endorse that as a little CR4 cultural guide when posting anonymously. Can't remember my password, is also a legitimate reason. I did that, so I have sympathy for that as a reason. Right now I couldn't tell you my password under torture. Where did that suspicion that an Administrator of CR4 would alter a post come from? Hell they can post anonymously if they want. I'll bet all the Guests would be flipped out, if for a day all the members they know by Avatar, CR4 name, posted as Guest. It would be really a bit cooler if when you saw a Guest Posting, it was a sign of secret or original information. To somehow know something knowbody else knows can be a little ego boost. To think of something nobody ever thought of is sort of fun too. What then is the ethics of posting anonymously? Say we determine it is to be able to share a truth that we know will advance all of mankind and the greater good, that otherwise could not be shared without destruction to ourselves? Is that good manners? I started this discussion, and said at the start it was something internal to CR4, but who knows maybe I'm wrong. In this day and age it is almost as if we are all supposed to be spies, and know spycraft and use it all the time. CR4 is a very well designed site and I may now turn to the administrators for an ethical answer that influenced them to facilitate anonymous postings. Did seem to me that it was getting a bit extreme.

"Where did that suspicion that an Administrator of CR4 would alter a post come from?" - because we did not write "Also, I just want you to know that despite everything I've said above, I really admire you and everyone else on CR4, think you're all very intelligent, and find your discussions engaging."

If you look at our posts they are all written in the plural or the third person - that is what we have been doing all the time.

Surely you can see that this is not just an issue for ourselves as Guests but for Registered members as well. Perhaps someone should ask Admin if they modified the post.

This sort of behaviour could get someone into a lot of trouble at sometime in the future. What if someone modified your post to include something illegal or subversive then perhaps you may find yourself trying to explain it to higher authorities.

Yes, in this instance, it is funny that it was modified in such a way. However that is not the issue - it is the fact that it was modified is the issue.

Had the post been offensive then the post should have been removed.

Perhaps this is really the answer to your initial post "Why So Many Guests"

We just hope that some member reads this and asks Admin if they had anything to do with this modification. If they did not then there is a security issue with the site.

I suspect that you have fabricated this situation to serve your own purposes. You have clearly stated ulterior motives. Nothing written in your posts can be accepted as truth unless corroborated by a registered and well-known member of this forum. In my experience, the CR4 Administrators conduct themselves and the business of this site with the highest degree of integrity. That this very thread remains open for comment is a demonstration of their editorial restraint. Your conduct thus far in the discussion does not give you the moral authority to even consider commenting on their actions or, in this case, suspected actions.

You are certainly welcome to remain and continue sparring with other site participants. It is of no matter to me, and I am sure you will find many willing to briefly entertain themselves with your particular brand of diversion. But if you're going to make serious accusations against site administrators or even other members, bring hard evidence, not a flimsy example of your own contrivance.

I am in agreement with CSM Engineer. I did not mean to start trouble. Chris onetime yanked a thread I started about mushrooms in the yard. My suggestion that Poly Science would be a legitimate category has also been rejected. In both cases I got a note and in both cases I understood the reasoning. Even if I did disagree to some point, the administrators of this site have over the two years I have participated, have displayed impeccable manners.

Which bloody guest are you. He is a bit confused. I knew it was related to a variety of mushroom in some way. Thanks for changing your ways, Ky.

Just an update on where in the world is Steve S.

Still in the South China Sea, I fly back onshore tomorrow. No pirates so far, but I sat in the crew lounge last night for several hours playing electric rhythm guitar at very high volumes with the mainly Filipino crew, a scaffolder on bass, a cook doing vocals, one of the maintenance techs on drums, and one of the guys on the cleaning crew on lead guitar. These guys were all professional caliber musicians... I had a bit of trouble keeping up with them at times.

Here is a picture of my digs, yes that is the helideck right above my roof.

Make sure to follow the arrows to the life boats....

One of the problem compressors I am supposed to engineer a solution for..

Wow what a lot of plumbing! Good luck. Nothing passes the time like good jamming with fellow musicians. Good luck out there, be safe!

There are some very good musicians in pick-up bands in the Philippines. I recall back in the '60's (when I was last there) any bar band I heard could have had a recording contract here in the States.

It's a well known fact that Steve S. once caught all the fish in the Gulf of Thailand in one night. When the fisherman villagers along the coast of Thailand woke up the next morning and found all the fish gone, they immediately tracked down Steve S. and begged him to put the fish back so they wouldn't starve. Unfortunately the fish were already dead, so Steve S. went to Australia and scooped up the ocean onto the desert and created salt flats. Then he salted the fish and gave them to the fisherman from Thailand so they wouldn't starve. To this day the word for fish in Thai is ปลา , which is pronouced stee-ve-es.

so then, you are the Guest? Please tell us what machine that actually is? It looks like a Aerospatle, but it does have a Jet Ranger Bell sort of nose. How many pounds of thrust do the engines have? What is the service ceiling? I have a suspicion that TMF wouldn't like it. When my neighbors who hated me moved to New Orleans I suggested they put some like you on retainer to come and get them. (This was prior to Katrina, so I figure they remembered my suggestion at some point.) -I had read the predictions of what was coming for New Orleans in Scientific American. Faulkner wrote Pylon and bought Dean, his brother a plane that Dean crashed to death. I refused to spin a Tomahawk, and when my instructor pulled power I just gave it throttle back. I have great great respect for helicopter pilots. It is easy to crash them, and I noticed from a seat in a Hughes 500 on a joyride. Go Guest.

The reason for the red is a bit ominous though... They say red is more visible in the water, so it is a requirement to wear red while on board, in case the helicopter goes down....

Wow, great looking craft! You look like you should be the pilot. I noticed some of your posts about music. My 16 year old son is a really good guitar player. He has an American deluxe strat, a Taylor accustic and several others. I wish you were close enough to jam with him. He plays mostly classic rock, Clapton, Hendrix, Beatles. He is a decent and clean cut kid. If your interested let me know and I send a link to his myspace, it has some of his music.

Once again, nice picture. And congrats on the fishing!

Bill
