Do's and Dont's

07/06/2009 5:06 PM

There are certain things that one should not do and some that should be done. This is true of the engineering community and elsewhere. I will start off the list with:

1. Never assume anything

2. Always double even triple check before entering

3. Never volunteer without first checking

4. Never give out personal information until you know what that information will be used for

"Never assume anything"- How true

When you ASSUME you make an "ASS" out of "U" and "ME"

I particularly like the "Never volunteer without first checking"

I never seem to have the option to volunteer, I tend to just get thrown under the bus, or in other words, I get Volunteered.

"Always double even triple check before entering"

I can triple check my own work and still miss things. I prefer to have a fresh set of eyes take a look.

Giving out personal information is just not good in any case... Unless absolutely necessary my name will be John Doe to you.

That list could easily be much much longer, In fact I'm not sure it would ever end.

I agree with the first four in any case.

I used to think that too, until several situations arose in which 'all other means' took waayyyyyyyyy more time than RTFM. There's gold in them there fine print.

Always have a standard, manufacture instruction or technical information as a reference when doing anything. Today's world is full of lawyers waiting for you to answer something like "...just because this is the way to do..." to get you. But I think this is just a corolary for the first item in the list. Item 3 is great in my opinion. Another item would be: do it straight, strong and true. Don't expect anymore to check it and tell you something is wrong. (specially good in aviation...)

Your points are all good.

However...

There are two rules to live by:

Never get involved in a land war in Asia... (HOW TRUE!); and

Slightly less well-known is this:

Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!!!

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha...

Do it their way, in front of them, and watch it crumble.

Humbly ask for them to instruct you as to what went wrong.

I rate that second only to the one I mentioned for wisdom. I respect Ghandi, and think he was an exemplary man. As for the one I mentioned, I personally consider it to be "The One Law of Heaven", in all its variations, which I think Ghandi's statement was an aspect.

Re: Do's and Dont's

Not sure that there is a "final answer" with "honor " to this.

"HOW TO DEAL WITH SOME ONE ALWAYS SEE HIMSLF AS KNOWING EVERY THING AND WHEN YOU TRAYING TO FACE HIM WITH THIS HE GET ANGREY FROM YOU AND ALWAYS SAY THAT WHEN I WAS IN XXX I WAS DOING THIS"

1) Nobody knows everything. Experience can grow over many years, or it can be one day only repeated thousands of times-where no learning ever occurs. That is seniority, not experience.

2) "When i was XXX I was doing this." So? That was before fax machines, Maybe before computers, maybe before Computerized controls, Etc. etc. The world has changed for the rest of us. You might welcome them into our world to see the positive changes that have ocurred since XXX... (My dad was proud that he had a phone; I currently pay for 4 phones for my household (just dropped the fax) and have 5 lines available at work, plus multiple email accts. Its a different world!)

3) Progress is driven by continuous improvement. If a person is not committed to continuous improvement, then there will be no improvement. Therefore, there will be no progress. We have a saying her " if you always do what you've always done, you will always get what you always got.

4) When one of these guys is a superior that you report to, it is especially difficult. But "Respectful behavior " and documenting the facts of possible savings by doing it "your way" might eventually help change minds. it also helps if it isn't "your way" vs His way" but "Here's an approach that maybe we should try because it will..." You can accomplish a hell of a lot if everybody stops worrying about who gets credit for it...

5) count your blessings, at the end of the day, you still have a job. When you want to challenge your boss, ask yourself "what is the reason that I don't want to do it their way?" If it is just to prove your way is better, rather thanto actually Achive better measureable results for the company, there will be only pain.

Best wishes for you.

milo

Many people who claim twenty years of experience have one year of experience repeated twenty times. They do not feel a need to learn or gather data, as they are convinced they are right. This trait has been shown to be disastrous in engineers, military generals, and American presidents.

The ten commandments...

Don't take a knife to a gunfight...

Sharpen you're point...

There's no good answer to the question why when she asks...

Be genuine...Integrity, the consistency between inward life and outward life, is the essential character trait of a leader...

While actors are at their best when they are lost in the role and are not themselves, people are at their best when they confront the illusion of the role and are themselves...

The degree to which I wear a mask in my key relationships is the degree to which my character development will be thwarted...

Don't do as I do....just do as I Say do! (The 1st thought that comes to mind when observing those with the repugnant ability to speak out of both sides of their mouth at the same time)

Do: Match your words with your deeds

Do: Maintain your integrity in all dealings with others

Do: Hold in high esteem the integrity and self-worth of all those around you

Don't: Use someone's integrity against them

The exception that proves the rule:

I saw and heard Howard Dean (former presidential candidate, and, I believe, Chairman of the Democratic Party) say on TV that the reason tort reform is conspicuously absent in the discussions on health care reform, is that Congress is afraid to take on the Trial Lawyers Association. I truly believe he got caught up in the heat of the moment and actually told the truth! Who do the representatives in Congress actually represent? The citizens who put the check mark by their name on the ballot, or the Trial Lawyers Association who puts the check in their account? I wish Congress could find the testicular fortitude to tell the Trial Lawyers Association to just go to Hell, and do what's right for the citizens. And go ahead and dock me for getting off-topic! This really gets me riled up, and the talking heads on tv gloss right over this, not wanting to rock obama's boat.

About two thirds of conressmen are lawyers. I've always thought it was a conflict of interest to pass laws and then profit from using them for pay. Yes, it's amazing that a politician forgot and told the truth.

So, to stay on topic: DO'NT ever believe a politician's promises.

I have two more to add to the list. "Never ever underestimate an adversary, no matter how low on the food chain that person is." and "Always document everything in an event that could come back to haunt you". Memories fade and documentation can mean the difference between success and failure. In the "he said/she said" scenario, documentation will provide the facts.
