Numbering Systems

08/29/2012 9:51 AM

I am learning binary systems by self study,but I am having a problem determining the identification of digits after the Hexadecimal System 0 thru F.

Do they begin to use lower case alpha characters, up to 35? such as Fa for 33, Fb for 34,etc.What about 64 bit systems?What is the proper integer designator for this system?

I am sure the solution is simple,once revealed, but right now I am in the dark.

Any assistance is appreciated.

Me too. In a couple more years I'll be 30.

I worked on a system back in college (IBM 1401) which used 12 bit words. 0...9+i+e. Hex hadn't been invented yet.

All discussion so far has been with integer arithmetic. What if we expand the binary system into fractional arithmetic?

0.1 = 1/2

0.01 = 1/4

0.001 = 1/8

0.0001 = 1/16

0.00001 = 1/32 etc.

Thus 2 1/4 = 10.01

This leads us into the double zero problem which led us into twos complement arithmetic. Any comments?
