Why Have People Left CR4?

I have been here for a few years and do like the banter almost as much as the really good info. but from time to time the system seem to change and lock's me out, like on several post that require a registration, even though I am a member it won't allow me to post or register. But enough on my issues on this last day of the year good luck to all here. Well some of us still have to work so off to the drudgery of making the world safe from it's self. Duke

Thread is already long, but I think I have a slightly different view. I like the banter and quips, but sometimes there is entirely too much of it. And some people just don't use the spell check capability. Perhaps if this multi-click (4 in this case plus preview and post) process were simplified more would use it.

The problem with spell check is that Americans don't speak English.

Seriously though, spell check doesn't fix the to, too, the your, you're, or the there, their and they're problems, but we have to remember that there is a vast variety of nationalities participating here, many of whom do not have English as their mother tongue but who do an amazingly good job of communicating with us in our language.

I applaud them and accept their quite small misdemeanours with what is a very complicated language to use.

On the subject of spell check - the CR4 spell check is telling me that my above spelling of misdemeanours is incorrect, when it is in fact correct English, just not correct American.

Usually when I see someone write in perfect English I assume they are foreign. ;-)

I agree on those whose Mother language is not English; I can usually tell them from those who just can't spell. Same with your spelling of misdemeanours. (Interesting thing: it got a red line, but spell check said it was OK.)

My favorites for things spell check can't flag are site-sight-cite, and rain-rein-reign. The English language has hundreds of them.

Years ago we used a word processer named "MultiMate", one of the early ones. When you misspelled "warehouse" as "wharehouse" as I often did, it would correct it to "whorehouse"! Still it was better than the CR4 spell checker.

I didn't realise people came and went, I thought they were all there watching, and waiting to respond to questions of interest to them, as I do.

I make helpful comments (or ones that I think are helpful) - then I follow the topic due to email updates and comment again if necessary. Interest in the topic eventually fades out and it drops off the email update.

If the OP is not one on the IHS new list that I can help with, I don't log-on.

So perhaps it is the quality of the OP question......you might not hear from me again ....but I am still here.

I think those that left got discouraged because that bathtub just won't break.

It may be just me, but I have a feeling that It may indeed be the hidden cause to to many incidents of very slow user-interface response : every time someone tried to read this thread, the whole system would slow to a halt..

I haven 't been around that long, and wouldn't overate my value on the forum but can tell you this:

When I first stumbled on the forum, it was googling something (don't remember what, but it was chemical related!!). I stayed around a bit to play with the neat trebuchet and rocket games that my kids liked- admittedly, I did too- and found that CR4 had a level of decency, intelligence and interesting banter that many lack. Quit bluntly though, I don't pay as much attention because the questions often don't seem to be as interesting (to me) as they were just a few years ago- especially when it's an AP!! Having a new daughter also swallows a lot of time.

Now mind you, anything from Del gets an automatic read- waiting for the repeating crossbow- or especially tcmtech responding to lyn (or vice versa)!

This whole thread reminds me of an axiom I had when hiring, keeping and firing of personnel to maintain a competent staff in the chemical Industry.

If you hire 3 people (three members join CR4): 1 will quit (leave because they choose not to continue to participate in CR4, doesn't like the few aggravating or simple doesn't care to participate); 1 will be fired (many negative responses or "challenged answers" from other participants); or 1 stays (participates in threads that they feel they can contribute to).

Thank you to all those who have stayed and made this an interesting forum, one that meets most "stays" expectations.

Happy New Year, hope CR4 stays as good as it is or even better improves for the participants. (Still can't post pictures!)

On the attaching / posting pic front .. keep the byte size small ... ie, no need for super high resolution to get your point across .. a bit like a CR4 post. So what is the max size of an attached pic? (That should get a couple more replies with an educational point!)

My pics are normally only 0.3Mb, but I have posted a couple at 7Mb, and they have gone OK, you just have to go and make yourself a cuppa while it loads, can take up to 5 minutes.

It is the old 80/20 rule:

Looking back on my working life,I have found this rule to hold true.

So much so that management training emphasizes not to waste your time on

minimum performers,but instead try to get more from the hard workers.

If you want something done, give the job to a busy person..they will find a way to

get it done.

For me, I found the repeatedly failing "preview" fiasco very off-putting.
When something does not work correctly (or as it's supposed to) coupled, with
no means of inspiring any correction (I tried at least twice) then I give up.

Not for me to question why, life's too short. Then, with over 2000 spam emails a day
(yes, I have a spam filter) I was coerced into changing my email address. If only they
were as interested in me, as they are in my (empty) wallet. This very effectively cut
me off completely from receiving any CR4 messages. Peace enveloped my small world.

Now my craving returned for some intelligent conversation with informed engineers.
With none to be found I had to return to CR4 to get my daily fix of friendly advice.
Please come back CR4 members. To actually chose being sent to Coventry is idiocy.

Seriously; members fall ill or die, some are put off (bullied) but, without the "banter"
we would all be robots, stating information to the best of our ability. The exceptions
make the difference; help destroy the boredom, and, I think we should all laugh more.

No one is going to get out alive, and the world is big enough for all. So what is life
but a cross we carry. Fool is he to take it seriously, yet only strive to benefit others.

First: Do no harm. Then laugh and enjoy all you can. It raises my spirits to read the
members comments; the happy helpful some times hilarious advice and comments
because, it conveys the comradeship and the joy of life to which we all aspire.

Regretfully not all situations are comic, or worthy of laughter, to some persons.
It is at time like this I fall from grace, and am truly sorry. In (a poor) defense I say:
life goes on and, if we need to over come grief, laughter is the best mediciene.

I too can't post pics in IE but I can if I open the CR4 thread in Chrome. I cannot disable IE. It is embedded in my email program which is Outlook formed from a collaboration with Telstra and MS. I don't believe they were married.

I can fully agree with that comment, someone else on CR4 fits into that perfectly....once he is no longer your "friend", he is forever your enemy!
