The Science Behind Windshield Wiper Failure

01/19/2015 1:32 AM

I have driven and owned many vehicles in my life and have always had the windshield wipers go bad on the drivers side and leave streaks at the most inconvenient level.

Can anyone tell me the science behind the failure of these wipers almost always where I need to see.?

Mail carrier vehicles are RHD to allow the driver to reach the curb side mail boxes.

I have seen a number of Japanese RHD cars on the road.

Part of that was due to mandates in Japan that required owners to get rid of their cars after they reach a certain age. Some got sold and shipped to the US at bargain rates.

I have seen a number of Toyota Skylines like this cruising around.

Many have driven a RH drive car in the USA and never ever knew it!

You could be one of them even!!

As most Japanese cars for many years, still had the wipers and the exhaust placed for their home country that drives on the left!!

Many forget that around 56 countries still drive on the left!!!

Furthermore, if the windscreen mists up, many people will notice that the RH side (where the driver sits in countries where driven on the left would be), clears first!!!

I do believe that most modern Japanese cars are built purely as right and left hand drive, mine seems to be so, but I cannot speak for all of course.....

Maybe some feedback from our members about such cars?

You notice this with the sweep pattern as well. Cars that are designed for LH drive then converted for RH drive have an uncleared arc of screen on the drivers side.

It is due to retinal identification lasers tracking your every move. Soon you will have the option of a heads-up display of a clean windshield.

The Grumman S2E's I worked on had hydraulically powered wipers that moved very fast. The acrylic windshields would take a beating.

Who needs wipers? Could this be one of those new "driverless" cars in action? Photographed on the M60 Motorway near Manchester, England.
