Will You Buy an Apple Watch?

03/12/2015 11:06 AM

Apple recently released additional details about the Apple watch, which will be released on April 24.

The new information included:

  • Case materials - aluminum, stainless steel, or 18-karat gold
  • Band materials - sport, leather, or metal
  • Communication between the Apple watch and the iPhone
  • Expected battery life of 18 hours

I'm not very excited about it. I love my Citizen Eco-Drive watch which relies on light for charging, and never needs a battery. And I'm happy to use my phone for notifications. I don't need a vibration on my wrist to let me know I have a new message or a meeting coming up. It seems like the Apple watch takes us farther away from the ability to unplug.

Will there be an Apple watch on your wrist in the future?

No.

I stopped wearing wrist watches 20 years ago. If I'm away from home and need to know the time I look at my phone.

Maybe if they bring out earrings, so I can have stereo...!

There's not a chance I will buy this tiny electronics display. I saw the advertisement for it on TV the other day. The fine details they showed me immediately told me that I'd need more magnification than my normal reading glasses to see probably anything. My Android phone is already larger than the clam shell style cell phone I use to use. I didn't try to access the web with my old phone and I often regret doing this with my Android. I certainly wouldn't even try this with a screen the size of a coin.

This looks like a product only for the near sighted.

I totally agree. I have a Casio Waveceptor that recharges from the daylight and syncs with WWVB every morning at 4 AM. It never needs a battery and is always right. I talked to someone with an Ewatch (not sure what type), who said he had to charge it every two days. I don't need a device with a screen smaller than my phone screen.

I'm sure the Apple worshipers will jump on it.

No, I bought my last watch 16 years ago, Tag Heuer 2000 Sport watch. And I haven't wore that in a long time because of the work environments I'm in.

Interesting note about apple, The Chinese already had it copied and selling the Apple counterfeit watch. Also what I heard from the British is that the battery life is poor, 18 hours. And if you use any features it can get done to about 2 hours. And recharging time is horrid.

The only thing driving the apple watch is the apple die hards prospects.

No chance I will get one, I don't use Apple products (primarily because I am not interested in being a slave).

If an Android version comes out, I am still unlikely to get one for reasons others have stated like the small screen size.

Re: Will You Buy an Apple Watch?

I might get one because A) I like watches, and B) for the heart rate monitor aspect. I like to track my runs/workouts, so its integration with my iPhone 6 and the Health app should be neat.

The idea of charging a watch, especially that regularly, is definitely a turn off. But looking at a watch that I'd be wearing anyway to see a "Yes" or "OK" text instead of pulling my phone back out would also be neat. Definitely not necessary, but neat.

I'll probably get the Apple Watch 2, because first gen apple products are good to stay away from. Or I'll buy a broken one, repair it, and use that.

If I ever got one it'd be used. I'd never spend more than $100 on one. Let alone $17k. That's insane, even for Apple.

No. A snowball would stand a better chance in Hell.

My daughter gets me (at my request), a cheap plastic watch with a velcro band once a year. It tells me what I want to know - the time. I don't have to take it off my wrist when I work on low voltage (<=120VAC) equipment. And the batteries will last 5 years - the only reason to replace it every year is the plastic face gets scratched, at $15-$20 who cares?

I totally agree!

I used to buy the Casio sports watch (About $19.99 20 years ago) and immediately put a Velcro band on it because the band never fit my wrist and would slip when I would sweat or get it wet!

I have used $20 Timex watches for years..."Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'!

In a book called "The Millionaire Next Door", the author states that most of them wear $20 watches!

There's a good article on why Apple may be doing this. One of the main points is it could be more for the marketing aspect rather than how much they'll make from the actual sale of the watches.

I didn't read the article, but I understand that their not so much marketing it, but are counting on the apple power users of buying it, just because its a new apple product.

Disposable income.... I hope I didn't say that out loud.

I expect that this will go the exact same path as the Google Glass. The watch and the glass seem so much like cutting edge technology that doesn't know where it can be useful.

Re: Will You Buy an Apple Watch?

Its possible (strong possibility), the glass, considering my poor eyesight..... that never moved me.

And the watch, I remember my parents got me a digital watch (Christmas, Must have forgotten to get me something and was a last minute item.....) when I was a Freshman in high school. I was surprised, it was a nice watch, but digital back then was $$.

The novelty wore off quickly for me, I needed both hands to see what time it was. which turned me off digital wrist watches. Too small a face to be useful and I have to big of fingers to be precise (Setting).

Bottom line (no pun intended) people and stock holders expect a new product from apple coming out every 6-8 months.

and imho, this fills the requirement. But a couple of busts of product releases. it will become oh-hum

Only when you pry my 20+ year old Casio of my cold, dead arm.

Expected battery life 18 hours <pfft>, I think my watch gets 53,000 hours or so between batteries. Besides I just got a new strap 2 years ago.

Re: Will You Buy an Apple Watch?

No...

Now, I wear watches all the time (military thing) and I'm an off the beaten path kind of outdoors-person so my watch of choice has to be functional, dependable, and durable. I've had and tried all different types and my current choice is the Luminox 8830 series.

Now, I have 'dress' watches - but not by choice, they are procured for me ;-). Apparently my wife doesn't think I need a watch with a compass when we go to the theatre or symphony or... in her own words... 'anywhere with her'.

Also, I'm an Apple person - not a 'fanboy' but I liked the fact that they make both the hardware and the software and I've used Mac for a really long time... I had a Mac 128k. I also use Windows (still have an XP machine that runs my tech software.) But outside of XP I'm not big on Windows... too many stability issues for me.

Apple was also innovative with the SmartPhone - but I'm not married to it and I like some of the other options out there... but the iPhone was my first SmartPhone and I have had, as of yet, no reason to change. And it syncs well with my other Apple products.

But Apple Watch - No... it does not fit my life style and would not be dependable over a long period (a year+ in The Suck) so it's essentially useless to me. Plus the fact that most of the health monitoring features are scrapped with this initial model and that you need to have an iPhone on your person for other features to work... no thanks, I'll pass.

Absolutely no way. An Apple watch, like a Rolex or Tag Heuer is just a vanity item, fine if you are multi rich and don't know what to do with your money. I have an Omega, I bought over 50 years ago and a Lucian Piccard, inherited from my Father. They sit in a box on my bureau. I haven't worn a watch for 20 years; no need, time displays are everywhere; in the car, on your cell phone, computer screen. These are things we just don't need. They are created for the sole purpose of making money. Next year they will come out with a "new improved" model.

No! Real watches have hands and can be used to explain the terms "clockwise" and "counter clockwise". The best watches have fobs and are kept in your fifth pocket.

Absolutely NOT!!!!!

With prices starting at $349.99 and skyward of $10,000.00 Absofu**inglutely NOT!

Why would I spend the money for something that has less capabilities than most phones we already have. And it only interfaces with an iPhone? (Which I do have) (Only because I got it for .99 cents)

No friggin way!!!!

Maybe the iPhone Kool-Aid drinkers will buy one?

Does anyone remember the SPOT watch from Microsoft? Does anyone even OWN a SPOT watch?

No chance....three things pop to mind....one, I have a collection of watches, that I never wear(I hate wearing anything, except clothes, and as few of those as necessary)....two, there's no way I could see the thing...three, the technology is redundant, I have an iphone 6+, I just spent $1k on, mainly because my iphone3 was hard to see the screen, and it kept crashing from the software upgrades....status symbols? you can keep mine just give me the cash....excepting of course, a nice car....

No, even without my reading glasses on, I can discern the time on my $35 Timex Expedition I bought at a certain, very large U.S. retailer. The battery generally lasts between 2 and 3 years. If I lose it water skiing or damage it doing something stupid, I would just shrug my shoulders and go buy another one. I can point someone to the general area on Lake Anna, Virginia where you can find a very well used Timex (takes a licking and keeps on ticking) down on the bottom probably in some silty mud.

Re: Will You Buy an Apple Watch?

Under no circumstances, even if it were given to me FREE! I hate digital watches!. When I usually want to see what time it is I don't need to know down to the minute or second. If I do I tilt the head back a little and look through the bottom of the bifocals. Was given a digital once when they were new but switched back to the analog within a week. Wife bought me a watch, she let me pick it out, after a serious health condition. I chose a st stl battery Citizen analog. Needs a new battery every 4-5 years, no chronometer, no fancy diamonds, no exotic numbers on it just glow in the dark hands. Main reason for it was it has an excellent st.stl band on it that doesn't self destruct, corrode or fall apart. On a cost/year basis I have never had a cheaper watch, including purchase, and it is even the best I have had.

Besides all that, I have better places for my money to go!

Good Luck, Old Salt

lyn-

What I really prefer, but they don't make the wrist bands long enough, is a Mickey Mouse watch with the short arm for hours and the long arm for minutes. If not Mickey then Goofy! Now those are REAL WATCHES! I've been told they are also a good way to get young women to start a conversation with guys. I'm too old for that kind of revelry though.

Those watches were the real pre-apps kind of watches! Even better than John Gambling walking out of the water with a Timex watch on saying "It takes a licking and is still ticking"

Good Luck, Old Salt

os,

When I was younger, I was into watches. I had one of the first calculator watches and one of the very first talking watches.

I'm over the gadget craze now.

Did get some high tech hearing aids not long ago. Coulda almost bought a gold Apple Watch for what those puppies cost. They're worth it. I could even hear my old talking watch, if I could just find it.

Oh, and it was John Cameron Swayze.

I still love the one Volvo commercial where they strapped John Cameron Swayze to (the passenger seat of) a Volvo to answer the question, can he take it. Then they run the Volvo through an all weather test track.

No. I dislike watches anyway.

They're made in China, though the price isn't 2 bob anymore.... let the Chinese wear the silly things. Bling and wow are wasted on me.

I do know people who would buy one because it so "cool" and it's Apple... these same people are always broke too....

Nope! i have a Timex Expedition and a phone, why would i need anything more? I even have a calculator watch that i bought off of ebay for 2.50 USD (shipping included). If you need to know the time down to a millisecond then your life is far too fast.

I've been rather fond of 'Twistoflex' bands on any old quality analog, although years ago I did spring for an HP-1, battery issues relegated it to the shoebox, wife once bought me an expensive 'dress' watch and then bitched when I was minutes late, it became a relic in San Francisco Bay.

If I ever need a watch, I just wait until McDonald's or some other fast food place comes out with one in the " happy meal" , that way I get a burger, fries and a coke too.

These look alot like that Apple watch. Could be some IP fights over it.

Pretty, aren't they?

No. I am not an Apple customer. That is to say, nothing in Apple's marketing is aimed at me or my interests, including a watch. I wear a $20 Casio which I take off and place in front of me under the PC monitor as soon as I sit down. It has hands for time and a little digital display which tells me the day of the week and the date. Anything more would just be duplication of what I have on my phone or PC. Why do I want to pay another copy of what I've already got, especially when it isn't as good as what I've got?

My son works for Apple and we have had many discussions over the years. He has yet to convince me that I need a Lamborghini to drive when I go to the grocery store.

I have a feeling that we may not be the target market demographic.

Apple should start a rumor of a new product line, and release it, like an empty box or something.... The Chinese will have counterfeit boxes on the market by noon. Just to piss the Chinese off.

The new Apple air. Not like the laptop, its just a box filled with Steve Jobs breath.

Getting back to the watch, it's a bit of an expensive gimmick really in a new market of smart wearables that is still finding its way. I think most sensible people will just wait and save their money since their modern smart cellphone already does the job just as well and you really don't need both.

Let's see...buy a gadget that needs daily charging and will be obsolete in less than two years to tell me when the other gadget that I must still carry, and needs daily charging and will be obsolete in less than two years, is buzzing?

My significant other is all hot to buy one of these. I told her I'm positive the Apple Watch will not be popular until it can completely replace the phone.
