The promise of vehicles powered by compressed air seems to be fading, but is there still a role for compressed air in engine design? In China, a regenerative air braking system may soon see application on bus engines. Engine piston "braking," working as a compressor, directly pumps air into a reservoir. The engine can be shut down and then activated via an air starter motor fed from the pressurized reservoir — which also directly "boosts" the engine without any turbo-charger "lag." Why, or why won't, this technology catch on.
