Home Cabling: All Dressed Up With Nowhere To Go

Posted November 17, 2007 8:26 AM

The rush to implement fiber-to-the-home placed efforts to wire up the last 100 yards was on the back burner; now with FTTx, exploding installers nationwide are trying to come up with faster ways to get it done. Customers have to make an economic decision for their in-home wiring: use their existing coax linkups, or new fiber cable? Installers need to wire up in half the time if providers are to serve the 30 million homes asking for advanced broadband and entertainment services and to meet their 2010 target. No two homes are alike, so national protocols are hard to apply. How would you take advantage of FTTx?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Wire & Cable Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Wire & Cable Technology today.

Utilizing the existing available coax or composite wiring (in newer homes of the past several years), is necessary for the business to succeed. Combination multiplexers using RG6, Cat5e, fiber can make an attractive combination solution.

Rewiring with fiber sounds nice; until you try to fish it in a wall full of insulation. When existing stuff is there, it should be used to hold down installation and equipment costs.

When wireless transmission gets better bandwidth in a few years, this will all be moot! <smile>; if and when that happens!

Cheers,
