Back to the future, the Power Glove and the Wii

Posted September 10, 2008 11:59 AM by frankd20

The date was somewhere near the end of 1991. The browser of choice was non- existent; text if you had Internet access. Bulletin boards were still the rage - elitist access if you were lucky. As for the Internet, there was Telnet, FTP, and FSP (if you knew what it was and how to use it), as well as Linux and DOS. My blazing-fast 486 33 had a math co-processor, a 130 Meg hard drive, and a sound blaster card.Mice were still vermin to me. Computer music meant MODs and perhaps Midi. Other sound files were just too big. The buzz was virtual reality, and the game system of choice was the NES.

In the late 1980s, the Nintendo power glove arrived. In the end, it was a big failure with the NES, but a big failure means a big drop in price. Enter one of my first computer-related projects. With some modifications, the Nintendo power glove could be interfaced with a PC. So modify it I did! The software, called Rend386, let you move around virtual environments, pick up objects, and move them around. Later, there was also a tennis game that you could use to pick up a racket and hit a ball.

So now we have the Nintendo Wii, and people are using the controllers for various applications. But I still have my power glove tucked away in a closet (I never owned an NES). I guess it was just ahead of its time.

Why haven't you tried making an interactive whiteboard like the one ShakespeareTheEngineer is currently working on with the wii remotes? Or perhaps another application with the same concept?

(I wish frankd20 made cool gadgets like the one Shakespeare is making )

No. In general competition between companies and products benefits consumers.

Jaxy <--- consumer

I want to reap the benefits of this new technology without paying the hefty price for it. Plus different people working on the same products spawn creativity along with new ideas. More competition = Better products

Jaxy has a point here. Although I shudder at the thought of getting into a gadget contest with the owner of Workbench Creations.

On the other hand, Frankd20 also has a point. Jaxy...he has you, at least a little, on that one!

Truth be had, the main reason (aside from not having time) I am not making a Wii whiteboard is because I have no need for one.

Rest assured that I have plenty of cool projects I plan to work on in the future. My top priority project while its warm enough to have the windows open is renovating my house, and I have quite a lot to do on that, just not many blog entries

Jaxy seems to be the one who likes to compete, and she better know enough electronics by now to connect an IR LED, so where is her Wii whiteboard?

Like you I have no need for one at the time. Perhaps when I decide to become a teacher or need to project a presentation of mine, I will have some use for a wii whiteboard and make one myself.

You better hurry though, the warm weather is subsiding to the coolness of fall!

This is very cool, and it makes me wish I had access to an NES system. This blog entry is a really good example of how much technology has changed in a little over a decade. Although I was quite young in 1991, I still got the sense of nostalgia from reading this.

The nostalgia is also probably why I think the NES glove looks like the one that Dr. Claw had in Inspector Gadget - the cartoon. Thanks for a fun and interesting read!

Ahead of its time indeed! Wii need this kind of innovation now more than ever.
