January is National Oatmeal Month

Posted January 21, 2010 12:00 AM by Jaxy

There are many different types of oats: rolled, steel-cut, and stone-ground. So it's hard to choose just one to supplement your breakfast. Since January is National Oatmeal Month, I decided to present some information about the different types of oats.

Definitions

Rolled oats are made by steaming the hulled toasted grains and then running them between rollers to create flakes. Steel-cut oats are about the size of a sesame seed and are hulled, toasted, oat grains that are then coarsely chopped. Stone-ground oats are about the size of a poppy seed and are formed much the same way as steel-cut oats; however, stone-ground oats are ground into smaller pieces.

Nutrition

All of these oats (rolled, steel-cut, stone-ground) contain the germ, endosperm, and bran of the original grain. Because of this, they are considered whole grains. Their divergence in nutritional value is due to their unique processing methods. Rolled oats start off as the least healthy type because of nutrient loss due to heat and moisture during steaming , but the long cooking time that steel-cut oats need also results in lost nutrients. All three forms of these oats are considered to be low-glycemic foods.

Since the nutritional difference between old-fashioned rolled oats, steel-cut oats, and stone-ground oats is relatively miniscule, the type that appeals to your taste buds most is recommended. So now you might be thinking, "What about them quick-cooking and instant oats?" Sorry, but oats that are packaged with additives are nutritionally inferior.

To conclude, I thought I would leave you with a hearty oat joke from formerfatguy.com:

"A tough, old cowboy once counseled his grandson that if he wanted to live a long life, the secret was to sprinkle a pinch of gunpowder on his oatmeal every morning.

The grandson did this religiously and lived to the age of 110.

He left four children, 20 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, 10
great great grandchildren and a 50 foot hole where the crematorium used to be."

I think Samuel Johnson said something to the effect that oatmeal was food for horses, but in Scotland they served it to people.

As a kid, I hated it, but that might have been a matter of cooking time, or quantity. Later on I liked it better, and the Quaker Oats instant oatmeal with various fruits/spices became a favorite backpacking breakfast.

Proud to have been the first company in the USA to offer "SAFE" oats to the celiac community. We are one of you, so we understand issues if our oats are not pure and uncontaminated. Yes, from the President to the Production Manager we are on a gluten free diet.

I used to like oats as a kid (in porridge form, but with Golden Syrup rather than Salt as Scots reputedly take them). Without namimg names (I'm Quaking in my boots ), makers make claims about how oats can help lower cholesterol. The wording in the adverts is carefully chosen, which leads me to suspect that the claims might not be as concete as implied/stated. I'm inclined to think oats are a healthy food, though it may be more in respect of the 'roughage' than anything else. Having experimented with cabbage soup the other day, I can vouchsave that it will be long before you reach the Crematorium that a 50' hole can be blown in the wall. Haven't seen such horror since the Brussel Sprout incident of '79

Or the 1919 Boston Molasses Disaster - 21 killed, 150 injured.

Thank God that can't happen in this day and age!

Or can it?

Oatmeal is a great way to begin the day. Some instant oats have garbage ingredients in them like high fructose corn syrup or artificial sweeteners, so choose wisely. Luckily, the "natural foods" movement is making it so more companies are providing natural versions of their instant oats.

I keep a package of natural, flavored rolled oats in my desk at work. It provides a filling, vitamin rich, whole grain, and fibrous meal that gives me the energy to get going in the mornings.

It's funny, in the same month that Oatmeal is being honored, there is also a "Pie Day" (not to be confused with Pi Day 3.14) on the 23rd. What a delicious month!

I like oatmeal and the best kind is that you grind your own self and cook right away

When I left boarding school I swore I wouldn't ever let that "stuff" pass my lips again. I had to tolerate that "stuff" again as it was my sons favorite as a toddler. Well, at least we had food and I shouldn't complain.

Re: January is National Oatmeal Month

Ah, so Oatmeal scooped the month of January! My heavens, what an edge-of-your-seat-white-knuckled-nail-biter that was, and no mistake!

Larks' Tongues in Aspic led for what seemed like an eternity with Hot Buttered Groat Clusters a mere two helpings right behind - and closing fast. For awhile Oatmeal seemed to taste like a distant third, picked up the pace a bit (the maple syrup helped), but then just disappeared. I waited for the longest time (I had a bit of bank riding on the outcome, you understand, as well as a few antacids) but eventually I just walked my bowl to the sink in disgust, figuring Oatmeal, like so many others, showed out to be just another run-of-the-mill also-ate.

Ah well, maybe next month.

I shot the bookie, btw.

Dammit.

A TRIP TO Costco

Yesterday I was at my local COSTCO buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my
loyal pet, Biscuit, the Wonder Dog and was in the checkout line when a woman
behind me asked if I had a dog.

What did she think I had, an elephant? So since I'm retired and have little to do, on
impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again.

I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but
that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes
coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load
your pants pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel
hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it
again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with
my story.)

Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned
me.

I told her no, I stepped off a curb to sniff an Irish Setter's butt and a car hit us both.

I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so
hard.

Costco won't let me shop there anymore.

Better watch what you ask retired people. They have all the time in the world to
think of crazy things to say. Forward this (especially) to all your retired friends......
it will be their Laugh for the day.

I'm sorry, but you misspelled almost everything there. To get a handle on this, it helps to start with the correct misspelling, "Mairzy Doats." A search on this will tell the whole story.

Sincerely yours--Editor Crankshaft

A look into the origins of "Mairzy Doats" indicates that it is the lyrics themselves that are misspelled, phonetic misspellings of the original words which inspired this song. Our Guest's spelling of the original words is, in fact, correct.

If oatmeal causes you constipation, then you may likely be dehydrated.

Good segue from the subject of constipation by the way... "who dreams up this ...."

Been eating old-fashioned rolled oatmeal religiously most every morning now for around 25 years. It's the one food I found I could stomach 'every' morning, no matter how I felt. I still love it for breakfast.

I always eat my rolled oats like a cold cereal not cooked but with milk and sugar only, well, sometimes with a bit of strawberries or banana.

Guess my mom was too lazy to cook them and that was how we ate them when we were kids. (sometimes we had oats cooked)!
