12/12/12

As we celebrate the last repeating numerical date for a while (the next one will be 01/01/01, or January 1, 3001 2101), let's explore some facts about 12/12/12 and the number 12:

  • The date is the same no matter which format you use (day/month/year, month/day/year, etc.)
  • Just after noon you'll see an even longer string of 12s: 12/12 12:12:12
  • 12 men have walked on the moon
  • The Astronomical Society of the Pacific declared 12/12/12 Anti-Doomsday Day (in an effort to clear up the idea that today is Doomsday; it's supposedly 12/21/12)
  • 12/12/12 is occurring exactly 6 years, 6 months, and 6 days after 06/06/06
  • Washington, DC has been America's capital for 212 years
  • Lots of couples plan on getting married or giving birth via Cesarean in order to have a 12/12/12 anniversary or birth date
  • Lots of things are grouped in 12s (better known as a dozen):
    • 12 months in the year
    • 12 hours of night and day
    • 12 signs of the Zodiac
    • 12 animals representing Chinese years
    • 12 Olympic gods and goddesses
    • 12 days of Christmas (and Engineering!)
    • Shakespeare's Twelfth Night
    • A dozen eggs

Do you have any facts about 12/12/12 or the number 12 to share?

Now that you mention it, Today is exactly 3 years, 3 months and 3 days after the birth day of my youngest son: 09/09/09. Happy palindromo Fernando !!

But hey, wait a second ! we are not considering leap-years, are we?

Oh well, never mind.

Every time I open a carton of eggs, there are 12 in it. Not 9, 11, 13, etc. Twelve, every damned time...! It's a conspiracy, I say! Or a miracle! Or a debacle!

Maybe someday there will be square egg cartons with 13 eggs, like the pattern of perforations in a saltine, or one of the early U.S. flags. O frabjous day!!

I'm just glad that it is now 12/13/12. Now the "tin foil hat" crowd will go back to sleep - at least until the 21st.
