Waterproof, No-maintenance Concrete

Posted June 25, 2014 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

How would you like to build your home or driveway with concrete that repels water instead of absorbs it and won't crack for as long as you own the property, plus 100 years? Impossible, you say? Not to engineers at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. They've developed a hybrid concrete, called a Superhydrophobic Engineered Cementitious Composite, that makes it nearly waterproof, as shown in this video. But they didn't stop there. They mixed in super-strong polyvinyl alcohol fibers that bond with the concrete to keep tiny cracks from becoming large tears.

Sounds like awesome stuff...how long before entire airport runways are made with this to avoid icing problems? Overpasses in winter also become iced up, and if water simply rolls off, less accumulation of ice, perhaps. Although no mention was made of snow, compacted snow, etc.

I would be worried about the rate of melting for this. If it decreases melting time, I would worry about floating ice, but if it increased melting time, thus giving the plows more time, I would worry about accumulation. I wonder which problem would be more difficult?

If it is as hydrophobic as it appears (repels water), then water will bead up, and not spread. The beads will tend to roll away as more water is added, given any crown to the runway. I think runway de-icing just got a whole lot simpler, but planes themselves will still have to be de-iced (and kept that way) or be grounded.

As to roadways, not sure this concrete will be cost competitive, except in bridge construction, and other areas where ice accumulation is a real problem for traffic. The product was shown to be flexible, so it can take a pounding, not sure about any transition from bendability to brittle state with temperature (the video was really short on details), and they mentioned something about this being "smart" concrete, presumably they can embed sensors within it.
