Talking Cars are Coming to a Dealer Near You

Posted August 18, 2014 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Technologies enabling self-driving cars got some high-level publicity recently when U.S. President Barack Obama delivered a speech about the nation's transportation infrastructure at the federal government's Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center in McLean, VA. Referring to wireless vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication technologies, Obama said, "They can tell you if an oncoming vehicle is about to run a red light, or if a car is coming around a blind corner, or if a detour would help you save some time and fuel."

One gets the feeling that this 'convenience and automation' will become quite distracting (as well as an annoyance) to the driver.

Back in the 70's (maybe 80's) in Popular Mechanics or a magazine like that we all remember the Moller flying car. A problem was brought up about the crowded airways, and the solution was that each car would be tracked by what is now GPS and would avoid accidents.

Sounds like a possible solution, but it seems that when you try to incorporate solutions to aid the driver, they just find other things to distract them... cell phone are notorious... (finally getting to the meat of the matter).

Anyways, when I bought my where I was giving it on a OnStar trial period. It's nice for maintenance , but the phone and other option is basic BS.

I was in my car, and I received a call on the car phone.... then wft was that. After I realized it was the car phone they hung up. So then I brushed up on that system...

too many distractions.

I received a call again the following day, but I didn't answer because even talking hands free on the phone, I feel is a distraction.

I really don't like the talking system in my 2009 Honda Accord. It actually argued with me about setting the Bluetooth of a new phone while driving. It has to read every damn artist, album and song title before it will gets to what I selected. It never gets the voice commands for the a/c correct and I have yet to get the GPS system to do what I want. It's a stupidly expensive waste of tech for me. I ended up with it when I bought the car from a friend who was about to lose it to the bank. Never again. And god help me if anything ever goes wrong with it.

Car: "Warning: a vehicle has been detected going the wrong way on the freeway on your immediate route. For your continued safety please take the next exit. Warning: a vehicle has been ..."

Driver: "A vehicle? Hell, they're ALL going the wrong way!!"

Why in heck would I want a talking car when I already have a shrill wife?
