What is funny about this? It is a picture of the older building where I work when I first arrived in the mid 1980's. My first full time task here was correcting all that kind of wiring.

I remember one of my first jobs while attending college was working at a music store helping the owner renovate the building that was built around 1800.

All the old electric wire was till in place in the basement. It was what is called Knob & Wire, where single wires were strung in pairs and every so many feet there was a ceramic knob that the wires attached to, but otherwise the wires simply hung in the air an inch below the floor joists.

I was ripping all that old stuff out when I discovered it was still live! For whatever reason I decided to put a meter on it and lo and behold - Voltage!

What a fire hazard that was with all the old insulation rotting off the now mostly bare wires.

I still have a tingling memory of knob and tube (what we call it in central Pa) from the day I was cleaning a light socket on the porch of my Grandfather's house with a hose. What a surprise to find out that in the knob and tube days, it was also very common to switch the neutral, not the hot line.That was my first lesson in Lock Out the source, way before OSHA got into it.

My second experience was as a third person party, when a friend had his house burned down by Amish roofers who did not know there was knob and tube run along the roof rafters and sunk a nail in a bit too far.

I also remember my father removing the knob and tube in our house, when I was about 13 or so. He ran Romex and hooked up fixtures and receptacles live standing on an old car tire, but that is another story.

Pretty much all the houses in the town where I grew up were wired that way.

But George, the India Electrical Safety Code Inspector said it passed all present safety code norms.
