Last month saw a record number of intercepts by NATO fighters of Russian military aircraft over the Baltic Sea. Large formations totaling 22 aircraft in the last two weeks of July were escorted by fighters from the UK, Belgium, Italy, and Norway. The transiting aircraft included Su-34 "Fullback" and Su-24 "Fencer" strike aircraft, MiG-31 "Foxhound" interceptors, and various transport types. Last year, NATO made 400 intercepts over all of Europe, but this year has seen a record pace, with 250 thus far.
