Is Popular Science Really Science?

Posted November 09, 2008 8:12 AM

There have been many popularizers of scientific ideas, from Rachel Carson's ground-breaking expose on the dangers of DDT to Carl Sagan's Cosmos to the Discovery Channel's many offerings (Mythbusters being a huge favorite among engineers). Is all this popular science improving our overall science education? Are people now more curious about science and technology? Or is television delivering scientific ideas as palatable, easy concepts that bely their real complexity?

The science content is often little and sketchy at best, sometimes downright wrong...
However if it generates excitement, interest and critical thought about science and egineering it's a good thing.

Those mythbuster boys (and girl ) are generally excellent.

I think I said that, but those Mythbusters guys, sometimes I question their enthusiasm.

Hopefully popular science will encourage youngsters (at my age most people fall into that category) to take on science or engineering instead of going into areas like law and commerce.

Without a good supply of scientifically minded people (ie scientists and engineers) our progress will stop and ultimately our standard of living will fall.

Society fails to recognize this and rewards lawyers, businessmen and doctors far better than engineers and scientists.

Now a-days it seems to get the younger people interested in science, it has to be entertaining.

I enjoy it, but I got into it more because of a thrist.....I had to know.
