Science Fiction or Science Future?

Posted December 06, 2008 8:16 AM

Could scientists actually clone a woolly mammoth, à la Jurassic Park? Well, they have uncovered 80% of the extinct animal's genome extracted from mummified hair samples. How about creating personalized organs for transplant? Doctors recently used stem cells to grow a new windpipe for a patient who had lost hers to tuberculosis. How else is science truth stranger than science fiction? What other possibilities are right around the corner?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Coatings & Surface Engineering, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Coatings & Surface Engineering today.

Hi,

I believe we've come further with cloning and genetical research than we think, or know about. Ethical questions are holding us back. You mention creating organs, think of all the lives that could be saved? I've thought a lot about this, actually to the point of writing a book about a genetically engineered being.

As it is today, I believe there is a lot of people that simply are not ready for the advanced technology we actually possess. Mainly because their beliefs and religion, and I'm horrified there's actually people out there who don't believe in Darwin...

It is just a matter of time and money. It might be doable to create a mammoth egg and male sperm and fuse them. I am not sure if they will find a piece of frozen tissue with intact cells they can program back to the equivalent of a fertilized egg and implant it in a female elephant. It may or may not come to term. There may be chemical cues that elephants cannot provide. With a budget and 20 years they should be able to achieve it or know why they cannot.

G.E.N.I...sounds interesting...

I keep a copy of the Watchtowers' "Life! How Did it Get Here? By Evolution or by Creation?". Lots of nice pictures. Did you know Adam and Eve were well manicured Caucasians?

I am always fascinated that a clear case of science and engineering provides proof for Darwin's theories...

Thank God for people who "don't believe in Darwin"... hmmm lets see, in the tens of millions maybe.

Good grief.

With only 80% percent you maybe get an animal that looks like a Mammoth but is not one in the true sense IMO

Carefull Epke......you might start another breeders association similar to the one dog breeders have.

It might start the "My mammoth was 98% cloned by the Japanese" syndrome.............besides, I heard that the Japanese had started cloning a mammoth a few years ago.

The Japanese probably want to create a mini mammoth that they can sell as pets, let them wear silly clothes and move them around in special Luis Vuitton Mammoth bags :p

I've read that we also have enough DNA to resurrect Neanderthal man. I'm thinking we can breed them and sell them as household servants.

That might be a bad idea, especially if they turn out to be smarter than us. There is an assumption that the Neanderthals were dumb, but there isn't actually any evidence of that.

They used spears and made tools. They buried their dead with tools and pigment (as though the body was "painted" before it was laid to rest). They had Jewellery.

I recommend Planet of the Apes Movies 1, and 3-5. You can skip 2, I don't think there is any lesson to be learned from that movie except that some scripts should never make it to production.

It's true they made tools, but the quality of the Neanderthal tools was less than Homosapien tools of the same era. The real question is whether they'll steal the silverware.

Actually their tools weren't inferior, just different.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neanderthal#Tools

As far as I'm aware (and I've looked into this), there is no reason whatsoever, beyond our vanity, to believe that the Neanderthals were mentally inferior to modern humans. We both occupied Earth for hundreds of thousands of years. It is much more likely that climate change or disease or killed by Homo Sapiens or some combination of all of that killed them off.

They don't need to be inferior to be enslaved, just different.

You're right of course. It's just that I have this image in my head, and it scares me:
