All spell checkers should be set to the linguistic rules applicable where the software manufacturer resides, much like hollywood tends to use a common california accent in movies, or the standard for television is the standard midwestern accent (though they tend to also use californian accents). Though i guess if this were the case every english spell checker would be set to suburban Seattle accents, which wouldn't be all that bad for me (since it is very similar to californian, but a little hard on australians or londoners).

My appaling grammer und sppelling is part stupity and part just to annoy. The bloddody spill chucker insists on using American English. It cuts all the 'u's our of my humour. English/Spanish translation has a similar issue. In a highschool Spanish class a young lady stood up and recited her part of a lesson. When she mad a mistake, she said "Estoy muy embarasada", thinking she was saying "I am very embarassed". What she actually said was "I am very pregnant". Fortunately she wasn't.

Yeah, critics are easily found in couches and other comfortable places. Would they speak out so readily when face to face? Forums are great but with some it draws the worse out of them.

I did not want to make you feel bad only to give you the correct expression. By the way in German there is as well a good luck wish which is not always rightly understood : "Hals und Beinbruch" which means break neck and legs even more than the one mentioned in English.

I would like to mention to you that you should not feel disturbed by people who try to show how bad you are, they have such a narrow horizon that they can not think the right way several month ago i was as you strongly criticized for my bad English by a person who i am sure does not know even English in its all details and fine tunings. I am using as well as i can 6 languages as English, Français, Deutsch, Romaneste, Russian, Italian and i understand a bit of Spanish. Whenever undertaking erection of utility pipeline systems in a totally new factory with plants from different countries, we have about 2-3 foreign erectors and commissioning engineers coming from Germany, USA, England,Japan,Italy,Korea etc., each for their machines. At time it totals 14-20 of them and we are involved with all of them since everybody needs some part of steam,air,condensate,water,thermo oil etc., for their machine(s).

My boys (Welders, Fabricators, helpers) on speak urdu or punjabi and cannot speak a word english to communicate hence, I was required round-the-clock. I came up with a novel idea to make everyone in my team to speak english with anybody.

I told them to add "ing" after every urdu word and use hand expression and anybody will understand. Kha = eat. Kha-ing with hand expression is understood. Ja = go. Ja-ing with a walking away is understood. La= bring. La-ing, Kar = do. Kar-ing = doing.

With time these boys have expertised to an extend that it amazes me that they are in conversation with these erectors during breaks.

Since this is a translation blog, is "learnt" the actual Brit version of learned, like tyre/tire, or centre/center, or are you a redneck? Or is that readneck? Cr@p, now I'm confused all over agin.

In (Oxford English Dictionary) English, "learned" and "learnt" are equally acceptable variant spellings of the past tense and past participle of the verb "learn".

"Learnt" isn't used too often these days (in writing; it's often pronounced with more of a "t" than a "d") ... I'm just a bit old-fashioned.

That would appear to be similar to a German pronunciation problem. For example, many men are called "Bernd" in Germany, and we Europeans have problems with ending a word with "d" in some instances.

In German you must not use a "d" as the sound it makes is more like a "dee", which is not allowed as you are adding sounds/letters which are not written, totally forbidden!!

So to get round this, such words and names like "Bernd" are spoken as though a "t" was at the end and not a "d", so "Bernd" has more or less the sound of the English word "Burnt", but with an "e" where the "u" is.

You use the "t" instead of a "d" to "cut off" the word or name's ending....

If I did not make myself clear, firstly my apologies and secondly let me know and I will try and improve my description for you....

Do you all understand fully the umlaut and sharp "s" in German, that is "ÄÖÜ & ß?

I can give a quick explanation if anyone wishes and the sound differences between an "S" and a "Z" and the other way to use "TH" in a language instead of the "TH" sound as in English "Mother & the" for example.....

Furthermore, both English and German have their own "sayings", some are similar and some are quite different, but some of one language are complete rubbish in the other language and some of them SHOULD be translated as they work in both languages.....and really could add a (small) new dimension to conversation....

There's something about the sound of many German words that appeals to me, even when divorced from their meanings.

Three off the top of my head are 'Bremsstrahlung', 'Schadenfreude' and 'Ausgetzeichnet' (which I tend to use a lot, much to the puzzlement of all & sundry!).

(BTW - I 'did' German for a year at school, and have spent several months over there).

I personally do not care in which language you write in, I am a lazy bugger and use the spellchecker and let it correct to US standards, but if you wish to use British, then feel completely free to do that.

So far, from what I can see, this thread has been dominated by those on the other side of the Atlantic, which might be a good thing. American English could deserve its own thread, with all the regional differences, slang, influences from different cultures, etc.

Lewis Grizzard was a humor columnist for a newspaper in Atlanta GA. He often commented on the differences between Northern and Southern language, and he was particularly fond of pointing out the addtional nuances of Southern language.

Take the word "naked" for example. People use the same word up North and down South. The spelling and the meaning are the same in both places. But the South has another word, "nekkid". It means, "You ain't got no clothes on, but now you is up to sumthin!"

American English. Now that's an oxymoron if I've ever heard one! Don't even get started on the way we speak. Most of us couldn't speak "English" if we tried. Both my parents are Okies, and I done growed up with some turrible tockin' habits. Not as bad as one of my buddies from L.A., though. That's "Lower Alabama" for those of you in the old country.

I personally feel that it should be called American, you are all big enough and "growed up" enough to have your own language!!!

There are more and more differences in spelling and pronunciation, which is right, correct and as it should be. i have no problems with it any way you wish.

Sadly, I cannot hear your dialect, which would be very interesting for me personally as I love hearing dialects and accents anywhere....

Back to the funny translations....a couple of years ago Mrs Cat bought me one of those micro scooters which were all the rage with kids (ok I'm just a big kid)

Well this thread seems to be going all over the place, so I'll scatter my own two sense in also.

I grew up as the son of post WWII European immigrants to America. So English wasn't the first language in the house. For years I thought we were speaking Polish, for that's where my parents mostly lived. We lived in an extended family, with my grandparents remaining with us all their years. It wasn't until I grew up and tried to communicate with some Polish relatives still living in Europe, that I learned they hardly understood me. It seems all these years my grandmother had been speaking Czek, my parents had been speaking mostly Polish, and my grandfather had been speaking Ukrainian. This resulted in my second language actually being Czeklishnian

It did lead to some colorful mixed curses when I misbehaved. My favorite was one that meant I was a sewer rat covered in vomit Not sure what language that actually was.

When I married a Brit and moved to Dorset, the British/American miscommunications were often humo(u)rous. But there was one that I'm convinced was at least partially responsible for my divorce some years later. Whenever Abi would ask me my opinion on one thing or other, and I had no preference, I would reply with "I don't care". After perhaps hundreds of "I don't care" replies, after the divorce was in process, I learned that the proper British response to her would have been "I don't mind". For all those years I had been telling her that I don't care about her, when in fact I was trying to be loving & appeasing!

Has anybody heard of the electrical appliance company named 'SMEG' or the delivery firm 'TOSFRIT'? Both are here in Spain and I think 'SMEG' is from the USA! In English, this word has an unsavory connotation! If you ever watch 'Friends', check out the fridge!!

Several years ago there was someone in Germany that got away with a personalized licence plate on their car for a couple of years before some English speaker alerted the Führerscheinstelle, who eventually revoked the plate. The registration number on the plate was SMEGMA.

Thats too many letters for a German plate, was it a US citizen with the Armed Forces?

Don't know the details unfortunately. I recall seeing the article about it in Playboy magazine quite some time ago. They did show a photo of the car with the plate on it. Might have been 25 years ago. One of those lost files in my brain that hasn't been accessed for decades, until it floated to the top because of the question about the SMEG Company.

German plates have a standard that seemingly has not changed since the early 60's at least ( we had a fire department vehicle from 1960 that had a standard plate), as far as I am aware the system was in use a long time before that.

The system is organized so:-

Firstly a 1 - 3 letter for the area, then a "-" and then a max of two letters followed by a 1 - 3 digit number. If the middle letter is a single letter, then you can have a 4 figure number. The single front letters are for large towns, the 3 letters are for "one horse" towns....

My license plate is as follows:-

FB-AM 31

FB is for Friedberg in Hessen. It could have been even FB-AM 1 or FB-AM 331

But nothing else except the local government & government vehicles, they only have the area and a 4 digit number. For example:-

FB-4567

Army vehicles are similar , as are police vehicles....

I would guess that it was a US registration in Germany (US Soldier), they could (not anymore) have anything as long as it was not duplicated.....then they could have had the plate you mentioned.

The people who did the actual US serviceman's cars licensing were Germans and would not know a "Smelly Dick" if you poked it in their face!!!

I'm unsure of most of the spellings & pronounceations, my ear hears english where it doesn't exist.
