LCD Screen: Ugly When Off!

12/19/2007 9:48 AM

Do LCD Flat Screen TV's have a screen saver image that works when the tv is off?

Can it be done? If yes elaborate! If not, then do same!

Wellllllllllllll,

By definition you wouldn't need to save the screen when it is off.

Screen savers originated in the days of CRTs (cathode ray tube) where a stationary image could burn the phosphor leaving a prmanent mark.

You can get LCD displays which are hidden behind a mirror...expensive tho'.

I'm sure you can get programs which will cycle throught the iamges of your choice...so you could have yopur own art show or whatever... (those digital picture frames are quite expensive and smaller than your PC screen)

Bottom line is it is hardly going to display anything when OFF...Unless the word OFF has some new interpretation with which I am unfamiliar!

Have fun

Ask Microsoft. They get everything else back-asswards. Windows make you press 'Start' to turn off the computer. Go figure.

Ask Microsoft.... .Still holding..

..You are in a queue..

...Hell will be freezing over shortly, do you want to hold?

(The propect of asking Microsoft anything makes a sinus headache relatively appealing)

However if you want to leave it on, I have seen art programs that flip through images of paintings or landscapes on the screen while you are not using it for other purposes.

What I meant was in stand-by mode, idle mode? Off my couch and not watching TV mode!

You know like those Digital pic' frames sold at Walgreens. Please do not refer to PC/LCD monitors, I know about those, my question is about TELEVISION monitors, those things that bring regular programming and commercials for ones "enjoyment".

!!!If you know about those then you can answer your own question...they are essentially the same thing and the LCD can be driven by a variety of sources.

You just need the appropriate source...oooh, but I'm not allowed to talk about it.....

I have a saying ..usually applied to asking Mrs Cat things...

'If you don't want the answer....don't ask the question....'

Dear commentator, my question is simple and it does not mean I'm ignorant. I wanted to know if somone, somewhere will come-up with a pretty little gadget or ckt that could be added to a TV to make it like a PC monitor where it can be left in idle or standby mode WITH A SCREENSAVER!!!!!!!!!

You seem to want to put so much info and forget about the reasons for asking. A question is sometimes placed to measure someone elses lack of understanding!

Yeh.... well maybe that's what the original question could have said?

No offense intended...but we tend to offer replies in good faith in an attempt to help. The title of the thread is 'LCD Screen'.

The quality of answers is generally directly proportional to the accuracy and detail of the question.

Besides the very interesting title that moves one to jump the gun; I suggest to be as quick to read the question! BLIMEY!

Thank You! This is GOOD!

...along the lines that I expected; Not too technical and not too complex! And no; I did not think of this. Now, I would like to ask; How I can save on energy consumption by trying other methods; like built into the TV ?

Hello ronald,

The best way to save on energy consumption is to turn off the TV at the wall, saving some $12 per annum of electrical energy by not having the TV in its "standby" Mode, take a long broom handle or dowel with you, then lie on the couch, shut your eyes and go to sleep.

You are wondering what the broom handle or dowel is usedfor - that isso you use minimal energy, turning that TV back on, at the wall switch, after your nap....

Nah, get a couple of extension leads. That way you can lie down easy and just flick the power switch. Wooden broom handles could be dangerous as in theory they can conduct electricity. They would for me because I just PMSL. Better still have children in standby mode for such tasks ( " When my eyes are shut and I'm snoring, chuck a blanket over me and turn the sockets off. Don't touch my wallet, I'll know !")

Now that the subjecct has changed to having the TV ON, be aware that most 40+ inch falt screen TV's draw about as much power as a 150 W light bulb. Check your spec's for your TV. This is a pretty large energy draw to pay for having a picture on the TV when no one is watching!

ronald FYI the thread title is NOT in keeping with your inquiry.

IF what you want is to provide a pretty design on the TV instead of an Ugly Black Area on the wall or elsewhere in your den/multi-media room or whatever you call it, you will have to have a PC with a TV display card and a screen saver you can connect to the TV. The cable converter of antenna signal processor will have to be OFF and the TV ON.

Maybe a timer to cut it off at bed time and turn it on at a preset time the next day

Last few times I have looked at my big tv screen, it was either ON or OFF. Don't know if it has/had stand-by or idle mode. Wait a moment and I'll double check.

Back now. It is either ON or OFF and no Stand-By nor Idle mode available.

If you have a blank black screen why worry. [w/ apologies to Alfred E. Newman}

Sony already do this.

My Sony WEGA TV has a port for Memory Sticks and will "Play" them like a screensaver with the push of a button.

Some of thier LCD\Plasma screens do the same.
These same models also have a variety of ports in the back to connect alternate video sources (i.e. a PC) which could accomplish the same end result.

With all the good multi media entertainment on the net these days I have also ended up having an "Entertainment PC" hooked up to the TV to stream movies for the neices\nephews.

It gets around all those nasty Zoning issues.

Global Warming is ugly too - when the TV is in standby. Why not just place a favourite photograph or painting in front of the screen?

Freeze frame on your favourite video/DVD. You can then paint the picture 'on-screen' and save loads of money. I did this with Panorama 10 years ago and have never looked back.. I'm considering upgrading to Blackadder, but need a good paint scraper first.

I don't know, the answer's obvious to me..

If you find the TV is ugly just throw a pretty picture or lace tablecloth over it to hide it

My JVC tv has a USB port on it for a flash drive. It IS cool to have a slideshow running while you're listening to music.

Now if only it would play mp3s from the drive as well...

You could always attach a cabinet door on both sides and when not using close them so it looks like a cabinet instead of a expensive TV

You find a way to watch TV with the TV off yet?

Maybe drive the car without starting the engine to save gas?

How can the TV "save" energy while displaying image?

You'll be really rich if you can do one of the above.

With a house in the right location you could use binoculars for watching the neighbours TV. On the several occasions I've been arrested for doing so, the Police just didn't believe my explanations. Wearing the panties I'd also borrowed from the clothes line probably didn't help.

Maybe the TV could be turned into an aquarium ? Nah all the pumps and stuff would use electric too. On the other hand, viewing would be better than reality shows like Big Brother etc.

How about putting a TV tuner card in your PC. You could then watch TV in a miniature box whilst enjoying CR4 at the same time.

Funny you should mention watching your neighbors TV. My neighbor had a very large screen TV that I could watch while I was sitting outside around my fire pit in my back yard. No sound but very easy to see picture. It was great for watching the game and enjoying the outside night air at the same time.

Even though I was having a laugh, it's true that some screens are now are so big that you can do this. It beats sitting on the pavement outside the TV shop + I'm not so obvious in the lacy panties I 'borrowed' !

Just so you remember where to return them to... "Ugh! They're all stretched out!!!"

My 'beer-gut' hangs over the top, so they don't get stretched ! Also I've never yet had to ask " does my bum look big in this". Probably because I know the answer.

Duh! My laptop has this in its user options section!

Conserving battery power

Get the most from a single charge

If you have time to do only one thing...

Use the Power saver power plan to minimize power consumption. You can always return to this article later to try more power-saving tips. To choose the Power saver plan, open Power Options in Control Panel.

Ever run out of battery power in the middle of a meeting? Has the urgent beep of your mobile PC's battery alarm made you the center of attention during an executive presentation? Even with recent advancements in battery cell technology and in software that makes efficient use of power, you can do only so much work on a single charge. The trick is to get the most out of the power that's available.

Chances are, you already have ways to make sure your mobile PC has power no matter where you are. Maybe you always carry the power cord or an extra battery for times when AC power isn't available. Those strategies work, but do you know how to get the most out of the battery you'll be using during your next five-hour flight?

Here are a few easy tips that can help you stretch your battery's power:

Choose a power plan that saves power. A power plan is a collection of hardware and system settings that control how your mobile PC manages power. These settings include power-saving measures, such as switching to a power-saving state when you aren't using your mobile PC. For more information, see Power plans: frequently asked questions.

Reduce display brightness. The display can use more power than any other computer hardware—even more than your hard disk and CPU. Although many mobile PCs are equipped with keys to adjust brightness and other display settings, the way you change the display brightness can differ depending on the mobile PC manufacturer. To learn more about how to dim your display, check the information that came with your mobile PC or go to the manufacturer's website.

Shorten the length of time before Windows turns off the display. When you're not using the mobile PC—even for brief periods of time—you can save power by having Windows turn off the display after a brief period of inactivity.

To choose when Windows turns off the display

  1. Click to open Power Options.
  2. On the Select a power plan page, in the task pane, click Choose when to turn off the display.
  3. On the Change settings for the plan page, next to Turn off the display, choose the display and sleep settings that you want to use when your mobile PC is running on battery and when it's plugged in.
  4. Click Save changes.

Turn off or remove devices that you aren't using. Many universal serial bus (USB) devices use power just by being connected. If you use a USB mouse, you can save power by disconnecting the mouse and using a touch pad or tablet pen. If you use a USB flash drive, unplug it when you're not using it.

Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) cards and integrated wireless devices also use power. If you don't need these devices while you work, turn them off.

These power-saving tips can help you get the most use from a single battery charge and avoid the inconvenience—and the potential embarrassment—of having a dead battery.

Nice answer Guest,

We could all get Hamsters for X-mas ; http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/08/29/hamster-charger/

(though I haven't been able to calculate the energy cost of feeding the Hamster)

Another possibility is using the hand, but this review doesn't sound too good ; http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-11288_7-6427792-2.html

Trevor Baylis may know an answer.

So you prefer the blackness of a computer LCD screen to an older television's green? By now you probably recognize that without power to CRT guns or LCD back lights, green or black is the best you can expect.

I sometimes (instead of going standby, which is what OFF actually is for LCD screens) will feed an aquarium or other active display (a form of screen saver) to my HDTV from the computer (sound effects optional). Depending on which video inputs your set provides, where an RGB input is best, this could be an option for you. The power consumption of DTV is low compared with CRTTV; but running the computer adds to the power requirement. Bottom line, if you want the set Off, any picture will be unavailable--being Off is also a good screen saver for any set type. Placing the set in a built in or standalone cabinet and closing the doors is another option.

Of course, you could always buy a box of crayons® for your kids/grand kids... I'm sure they'll be more than happy to whip something up for you. Also, don't be a Scrooge! Get the 64 color box with sharpener, you cheap bastage!!!

"...you could always buy a box of crayons® for your kids/grand kids..."

Reminds me of the world's first interactive TV program, way back in 19-something-something--memory's a bit fuzzy but I thinks it was Mr. Twinkles or some such--where the viewer input devise was a film and wax marker. The film was spread and clung onto the picture tube screen (at least the first few times) and the marker was used to trace a drawing being sketched (backwards) at the broadcast studio.

This was before the hazards of radiation were well understood--when foot (and whatever) x-raying in shoe stores was still in vogue.

Very good!!! You do remember stuff, so you can't be that old. The rick of X-rays diminished when they started putting the HV rectifiers into little, metal, houses.

I walk around with 'tin' foil on my head just to be safe. I'm not going to have them aliens and Government agencies beaming thoughts into my head. I tried lead but it was too heavy. Do you think I'll be OK ?

Hello ronald,

I have been wondering, but too polite to mention it before.

Noting your Topic Title:

"LCD Screen: Ugly When Off!"

The question I ask is in the nature of a delicate one, but ask I must.

Is your LCD screen one of the new ones which look like a mirror when un-powered = Off ?

If that is so, what you see may well be your own reflection.....

Happy Christmas....

Hello Guy's...!

I was wondering where all of you had gone!? I'd forgotten it was a weekend and probably you'd all gone away to visit and party. I'm alone in this frickin' house. My parents are in Orlando, Fla. waiting for me to finish some fixing a few things here at the house before they move back in. You know; water damage due to rainy season. Fatigue/fungus in concrete structure, they were sick all the time, colds, sniffles, asthma, rashes, sores, infections of the skin and all that. Hmm, good material for discussion! About the WS LCD or Plasma TV's; I think they're too expensive. For now I'll stick to the tube until prices start falling. Nobody in the household has bought one yet but seriously considering it in the future. My question came because I'd seen them in other peoples houses and thru windows and store fronts and displays etc, etc. but considered that hanging a blank screen on a wall was kind of ridiculous; then the mind started rolling and the rest is history... Well, I apreciate your concern. Have a Merry One on me!

Back in 1970 when they moved to PR they started adding to the house...

They were never told that beach sand would wear away the rebar; so now the roof is sagging, bulging and the humidity has created a menagery of different fungi and plantlife on the bedroom walls and closets. I think they'll need a new roof and that will cost nearly $25,000.00 (rough estimate).

Need source for EPDM and definition.

Say no more!!! EPDM.

Wow! It also sounds like you need to import several house geckos from Hawaii to get rid of the really big bugs. Also, have you checked about indigenous snails & slugs that live off this fungi? If it grows, there's often someone near by that will eat it!

It's a black, dusty (spores) type of fungus, that caused my mom to break-out in nasty sores; I thought she had a human flesh-eating bacteria. But then I noticed the fungus and all and determined that they should take a long vacation until I could do something about it. I washed the roof and walls with Clorox® and it took care of that but if I don't fix the leaks it'll all come back. The house is old spanish style with an upper level terrace. I was thinking of just putting a roof over the terrace?
