What is my 'thing' ?

03/23/2008 8:19 AM

Inspired by PlbMak's recent picture puzzles, I had a look in my cupboards. Does anybody know what the contraption below is ? The label would give too much away, so I've left the pictures blurry, but I might attempt better shots later. I found it in the out-buildings of a Farmhouse about 30 years ago, lying amongst stacks of old wood-working tools. That's probably not relevant, but you never know.

Ane fule kno it is the fuel filler/filter from the original KrisDelTM mk1 time machine...it's the only remaining piece...the rest dissapeared back to 1832 or thereabouts .

I just went back tommorow looking, but to no avail. Whilst there I posted my findings forward in time, but I can't remember to what date. One of the 3 turbo-intakes on the outside has fallen off as well.

It can also be used as the bell for a flugel horn, but the resultant sound was so horrible (like a tortured Del the Cat) that it was outlawed in every part of Europe in the 1800's. They had to convert it to spare parts for time machines...

It look like the parts (separation cone & gloat) from a cream separator. The ones that made ting ting when it was on the right speed.

A more refined machine as well. I think this one separate the cream from the Orly whip.

No far fetched gig here. Not as far as Del´s anyway. I believe he´s right about the fuel part though.. Looks like a gas burner head used for weeding small plots by burning. What about it, Kris?

Warning to all CR4 users.

Kris has previously shown by his posts and thread choice, to be of exceptionally doubtful nature and as such should be regarded as highly likely to want to cause as much confusion and strive as is humanly possible in order to have his wicked way with you.

Don't look at the pictures as they are solely devised to alter your state of mind so you become vulnerable to his brain waves. Instead block all images from CR4 and just tell him we are not interested in his "thing". We know many things could tickle his fancy but we do not want to be part of it.

You'll all have to forgive the lack of individual replies, but you are all wrong so far ! Hee hee hee.......Some more clues...........It would have originally had a wooden 'handle'. Operating mode would have been on an upright position as shown in the first picture. Sometime (slight guess) circa 1910, it would have been a 'must-have' inside the suburban home. I don't yet know exactly how it was powered, though it may have been a 2-person job. Some versions of this type of thing required a horse and cart to carry the power unit ! Hmmmm........

Hi Kris, Looks to me like the bottom part of what we used to call a "Dolly Washer", Powered by one housewife's hands heaving up and down on an upright wooden handle fixed to the tube at the top. used to wash clothes in a wooden tub of soapy water.

Takes me back a long way. TrevorL

Hi TrevorL, You are indeed correct, as was bobdad at #12 (oops, my bad !). That must be a fair way back - did you ever see one used ? I can recall old fashioned wash-boards and hand-cranked mangles. Anyways, here is some pics pinched off the web ;

The name-plate reads

THE BRITISH VACUUM WASHER Co

THE "SWIFTSURE"

PATENT No 10999/15

DUKE St LIVERPOOL

Hubert Cecil Booth founded the British Vacuum Company in 1901, and I think the makers of this are a subsidiary. Booth is credited with inventing the first vacuum cleaner, though there's lots of contenders. It needed a petrol driven vacuum pump, drawn on a horse carriage. The hose was fed through a house window. Hoovers 'bag-on-stick' arrived in 1907. I digress, as you say it's a 'wash-dolly', or more simply an 'agitator'. I wouldn't want to arm-wrestle the sturdy washer-woman !

Thanks to all. Now I've put you in the frame of mind, you can venture forth and do the spring cleaning ! For the nostalgic, there's one on e-bay for 99p (at present).

Hi Kris, Yes, Liverpool's my home town. I remember Duke Street and the company offices. They were on a corner and had an enormous poster of the dolly washer on the wall. Used to delight this small boy on the way past. TrevorL.

Wow ! It's amazing what connections all the people on CR4 have. I'd never imagined that such a 'thing' would find somebody who'd lived next to where the makers were. Hope you enjoyed the trip down 'memory-lane'.

Kris Good morning. Had the OP shown the "Plunger" in the left hand illustration minus the handle I would have recogonized it immediately. I was indentured to operate one on a few occasions. I missed the clues of the vents in the muddy photo in the OP.

During the depression years they were in common use in the US.

Good morning to you Stan. There's probably more than a few people who's interest in things mechanical began with household appliances. My mothers mechanical meat-mincer used to fascinate me. I haven't seen anybody use one of those in years. If I asked present generation kids where mince came from, the answers would probably be hilarious/alarming. I've even heard first-hand, some of those stories like kids thinking eggs come from hens etc. Whilst diverging to read about vacuum cleaners, I was amused to read that Hoover didn't invent his vacuum cleaner. It's hard to imagine 'spangling' rather than 'hoovering'.

As a point of interest, here in Central America, the manual mincing machine is a very common feature in the typical kitchen, and they are readily available from most housewares vendors. Most seem to be fabricated in China...

I'm worried - my first thought were Liberace and the Rhinestone Cowboy ! That's nearly as bad as your inclination towards ducks. Some people will be too embarassed to reveal what sex-related thoughts the word 'spangling' prompted in their heads. Those who though 'flag-pole' might do better to remain silent.

The flag is fine, it's just the whole phallocentric business of hoisting it up and down the pole. You can rejoice in your observation of the flag-pole every morning.

I still have my Mother's! Useful for making sausage, and for cranberry-orange relish. More reliable and consistent texture over a 'food processor' (that name has ALWAYS bothered me!).

Had one in an old (pre 1900's) farm house I rented in NE Washington...near Canadian/Idaho border.

<......an upright position.....>

According to NASA's terminology, the Apollo capsule containing the three astronauts adopted the "stable 1 position" after splashdown. In the event of it tending to the "stable 2 position", a set of buoyancy balloons were inflated to prevent its getting there.

The top picture shows the stable 1 position, and it looks as though the buoyancy balloons have failed in the lower picture. Back to the drawing board......

Yes, 100% - I used one as a lad in a wash tub.
(soon got fed up though!)

I was intrigued by how it "worked" - but not by
my aching arms, - and always tried to disappeared
sharp-ish, when I was to be "found" something to do!

Shows my humble beginnings (violins) - but we soon
got rich - and had a iron mangle! (much more interesting)

After a few finger pinches, I found a respect for any
machines larger than me. Happy days!!!

LOL. You probably had good reason to do a disappearing act - working one of those 'dollies' must have been real hard work. Guys like you and Stan must have developed pretty good arm muscles, or at least leg muscles ! I'm surprised that old fshioned mangles haven't re-emerged to cater for those who want to cut down electricity consumption. Maybe too much clothing now has buttons/zips that would break. Even seeing kids wash the car is a rarity these days. Keep 'em busy and out of mischief I say !

Seeing kids do anything anymore is a rarity. I tried, as a child, to get out of chores, but with a military dad with an 8th dan...you tend not to argue too much. Fear: The Great Persuader

Anymore some soft hearted piece of filth would make it sound as if you are neglecting/harming your child if they were to find out that you were forcing them to do chores(?) such as washing the car(s). Don't you know it is better for them to sit on their butts and play video games and/or surf the net w/ myspace then it is to get outside and get "fresh air" and actually do something. We take ours to the park. Car washing is the realm of the adults still (at the local car wash). When I have a house, then the, hmmmmmmm yard chores will not be mandatory (I enjoy doing yard work) for the kids. How about voluntary?

Voluntary is great - you can Tom Sawyer 'em into doing just about anything! My Mom used to get me to do the most b-o-o-o-ring chores by figuring out ways to make them seem like games. That way I didn't resent doing them. Something along the lines of "if you behave right, I might let you help with the yard work, and I'll show you a few things about how flowers grow" should work for you.

Del, all you had to do is look at the mirror image, and it should have been instantly clear. If the mirror was moving away at nearly the speed of light, then you could have seen the "thingy" in action, some years ago.

As a young boy (about 6) i saw one of these in action. My Dad (Auburn Mech. Engr.) rigged up this device to a bunch of pulleys, belts and a one cylinder gas engine to *invent* Mom a washing machine. I think Mom was afraid of it because I don't remember it after the *inventing*.

I dunno about that - they haven't been in common use for many years - I know about them from my folks having an old one about as a curiosity, and I'm forty-twenty years old... A bit better focus might have made it easier but it wouldn't have made it newer or us older.

Sheesh! Give a guy a camera, let him take a couple of out-of-focus pictures, and all of a sudden, instead of being a klutz who couldn't focus the lens if it was programmed to spit out boiled eggs when done right, and all of a sudden, people think he's the next Jackson Pollack. Could be, I always suspected HIM of having his little joke on the artsy-fartsy crowd, too!

As it happens, I know the truth of the matter. Those pictures were out of focus because squirrels haven't got proper THUMBS! There! The secret's out. I've said it, and I'm glad. No more hiding the truth from the public, no more worrying over being called to task for not coming forth when I knew what I knew...I'll sleep better tonight for it, I know I will!

I'm sure the camera had some kind of auto-focus switch, but I couldn't read it. I took my inch thick glasses off to see through the lens proper. Squirrels have sort of 'proto-thumbs'. Plenty good enough to swivel on.

You can see that Squirrel is blind, he even has a white stick in the LH foto !!!!

But how he can scamper around in the trees wearing INCH thick lenses is another sight to see!!!

LOL. It's just a shame he impaled a stick on the carpet tile - the poor critter is stuck now !

Speaking of poor stuck critters, that used otter I mentioned... We had a road-killed river otter here yesterday, poor critter. She (hopefully did not have kits yet this year) is now stuck in my freezer.

EnviroMrs is not yet apprised of the situation.

The freezer is in the beer fridge in the garage, so I am hoping to find a suitable taxidermist prior to having to let the otter out of the proverbial bag. I researched our state laws yesterday; I can have a road-killed animal mounted (or the hide cured) w/o a permit.

True, this would have been perhaps more appropriate for the "Strangest Hunting" thread, or even the "Foot-Pounds Air Gun" thread, but here's where I first mentioned it, and while nobody rose to the bait, here's where I chose to 'splain the remark. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it...
