The Guest Question

03/24/2008 1:35 AM

We frequently see people asking Guests where they are from because it affects the answer to the question.

This problem could be avoided if one had to be a registered member to start a discussion or ask a question. That way the person would be informed of all responses as well. It might be worthwhile to consider requiring location information be posted as well.

This suggestion is not made because of any form of bigotry or racism or even snobishness. It just seems that if a person wants to benefit from this fantastic set up they should be prepared to at least register as a user.

Hello The_curious_one

There have been discussions on this subject before.

The problem is not confined to the person who asks the most questions: "Guest".

There are evidently people who register at CR4, and don't bother to put their location.

Some of those Members do ask rather odd questions, or just make a half statement, to no advantage.

In some Countries, it may not be prudent to advertise one's location, for political or other reasons.

I'll bet that your real name is not "Johnny Canuck", either.

Kind Regards....

Re: The Guest question

I wasn't so much concerned about location as I was about failure to register period.

I believe that there was a comic book hero Johnny Canuck or Captain Canuck. I have often seen Johnny Canuck used as a generic name for a generic Canadian.

"I have often seen Johnny Canuck used as a generic name for a generic Canadian." And there was even an airplane officially called the Canuck (a Curtis Jenny, Canadian-built, differing most obviously in shape of rudder and vertical stabilizer). See, for example ,http://www.worldwar1.com/dbc/jenny.htm

The Jenny / Canuck?

Re: The Guest question

I wonder if there are places in the world where Google is blocked out. I've heard that if your in China, and Google "Tibet", nothing happens. We do seem to get a lot of questions from India. I wonder if there are places where CR4 is off limits. I do agree that people should register here. It's very easy, takes less that a minute, and cost's nothing. BUT WAIT! If you register now, we'll double you order! Call within the next 20 minutes.....

Re: The Guest question

The problem with registering is that if you continuously ask simple innane questions (like you are trying to get the solutions to a frosh intro CE course), people begin to recognize the registrant and stop answering his homework problems. Now he has to learn this stuff, and the only real reason he is in college is to get an engineering degree to add an air of validity to his statements when making sales or corporate management decisions. However, he perceives the knowledge as useless in his future career, except to sound like he is competant to the technical staff.

Well either your info was incorrect, or it has changed. "Tibet" found about ... well, a google of hits. Google isn't too bad these days, but Wikipedia is rarely available. Although SSSSLLLLOOOOWWW, CR4 is available here so far. I think this year, with the 2008 Olympics, security will be even tighter, so who knows. We live with what we got .

Well... we do know that CR4 is open in China, considering that we have several Chinese contributors, but I just happened to think... do we have any Russians? I am not aware of any.

I think sometimes you think it will be a one time request and you don't want to register and have to remember one more password. Once I figure out the perfect password to use for all occassions, I will contain multitudes.

"Guest" can often be very annoying because of the anonymity. You never know if it is the same person or not. Perhaps a limit can be put on a "Guest" who identifies self to CR4 but does not want a formal name or location posted or to join the group as a regular member.

I could register again using a false name from a phony location ...

I could use my stealthy position to gather secret engineering information from all over the world !!!!!!

AND, when everyone LEAST EXPECTS IT, I could CONQUER THE WORLD !!!!!!

Re: The Guest Question

Just because a registrant states that (s)he is in a particular location doesn't necessarily mean that registrant is in that particular location or that the problem actually relates to that particular location. What it means is that respondents have a fair level of confidence that the registrant's issue is related to that particular location.

It is far better to be specific in the original posting as to the location of the problem, so that a higher level of usefulness can be received, more quickly, in answers to the original question.

Assumptions and abbreviations are particularly annoying. LA could mean Los Angeles. It could also mean Luton Airport. Nuff said?

LA could mean Los Angeles. It could also mean Luton Airport.

FYI, airports have official desginators of 4 characters. Members of the British public might refer to Luton Airport as LA, but British pilots (and aviators of all nationalities) call it EGGW. They might also refer to it as GGW, as the first letter indicates the country.

Storm chasers will often refer to a city by the desinator of its major airport. NWS Forecast Offices and Doppler weather radar installations also have airport designators.

I don't think so! Cats don't think - they know. When they don't know, they get curious. When they satisfy their curiosity, then they know more!

At least that's the only way I can think of to explain feline behavior.
