Member Status Revisited

02/14/2009 3:14 AM

Respected members,

Recently I got interested in those member status things, and started guessing when one can become "Power-user", etc. Checking out the CR4 FAQ gave me the answer. However, dear and honored members, I would like to propose that those titles should be tied up *also* to the number of good answers. I believe a success percentage would be more meaningful than the number of posts, while observing a minimum number of posts to be able to qualify for promotion in each rank.

For example:

1-10: Participant

11-30: Member

up to 60 (or min. of 5 good answers): Active Contributor

61-100 (or min. of 20 good answers): Power User

101-500, or min of 50 good answers: Guru

501 and higher, or min of 300 good answers: Master

In this arrangement, promotion comes for the first 2 levels simply by number of posts, but the Active Contributor can be quickly obtained with 5 good answers. But without 20 good answers, the level Power User won't be attained. Same goes for the next higher levels.

Thoughts, anyone?

Europium just added and it's only showing 8 still......please let the time-delay theory be true. I'll stay here all night watching if I have to ! The agony is that I can't complain to admin that I'm unable to pervert the scoring system

Why don't we ask moderator or administrator or whatever he is called to add up all the OT marks of a thread and show in the first of the list for each imposter ?

That way I can run a century in this thread

BTW bad poster must be called imposter ?

like immaterial, immoral etc

or imposter is the important + poster ?

Well On-topic posts should only go to Guru count IMO (that means that i am still not there yet)

and there should be a special title for large offtopic posters like Catduck?

Re: Member Status Revisited

I've come to the conclusion if I read the post later than earlier I learn more. So I guess I'm greedier for knowledge then good answers. If I read a post of interest then that I can add to or want to see any updates from, I get involved.

What I find amazing is what one gets good answers for. Give a perfect answer for a topic you know very well and wonder why it is not even commented to. Other times state irritation and voice opinion and get a GA. So a GA is accepted with a grain of salt.

The GA I really enjoy are when the OP and engineers of that discipline tell me they thought my answer was worthy. Priceless

You should know by know, that it is not about the information, but how the information is presented.

Same goes about or may be about anything.

PS: Gremlins don't mind water thrown on them (as has been misrepresented) we love it, especially when we are in front of a power board or a delicate electronics circuit.

We can Duck but those can't

Yes the marketing of knowledge for good answers seems immoral on one hand but if you sell the OP on information that they need does the end justify the means.

I am surprised after seeing the type of responses in this

show you are still asking this question. Here there is no asker (may be askew) which is the 6 levels above asker (r-s-t-u-v-w)

Hence being at higher level we can always give GA points.

But I really want to know who is giving the OT points to me in my perfectly tropical posts ? (in the other thread- the one can I join an engineering forum ) and my perfectly Ot posts still remain at 5 only.

I AM POSTING IT AS NON OT POST.

sb, I raised the issue. shouldn't that make me the *asker*? and shouldn't I be the one to say that I'm satisfied by any one or more answers? otherwise, what is the meaning of a GA? ?

and, surely, it was not I who took the topic to it's what you call "looney" direction, raising the topic's status to "multiple star"! :D

How could you judge if one answer is correct under a myriad of answers? especially if one gets several similar answers

it's simply called "satisfaction".

10 answers can be given which are alike, even similar, in approach and methodology, but only 1 will win the "asker's" nod. in short, the best presentor wins.

don't you think that's a fair call?

Yes, when he is knowledgeable of the subject, if not he just has to try all 10 answers (or its information).

Your assertion is flawed...
If we assume the asker is asking a technical Q to which he doesn't know the answer, then he isn't necessarilly in a position to know which answers are good.

Whereas other respondents who have experience may well know which answer really works.

Yes and no, not all askers are knowledgeable about their technical questions(if you haven't noticed some of the questions).

They just use all that is handed to them.

Re: Member Status Revisited

I must go look at this thread everyone is talking about.

Clearly CR4 admin don't think that way, or availability to award GA's would be set to operate as you'd like (not that this, in itself, invalidates your case). A question posed becomes public property. Someone else may come along later with exactly the same question, and want to make their decision about what the good answers are/is.

Luckily, I've thought of a solution. At the end of your questions, ask for replies by PM. You can block the receipt of further messages from those who are no help/OT, ponder the useful ones, and send a box of chocolates to the response you deem best. Of course, you would have to extend this courtesy to others, and just post responses to other threads by PM. That way you wouldn't risk upsetting anyone else's judgement value, and never have to read a single thread. 'Fairs fair' and all that.

Sorry if that sound a bit harsh, but I get tetchy between poster shoots.

I never got the chocolate from that - I don't remember lapping issue or something like that, even that blind hole fluid entrapment case

I didn't even get a single GA for those

Can you see the puddle (don't worry del/kris it's not poodle)

So there.

Now please go to the thread and give me at least 10GAs each (along with 20 OTs) so it will add 20 OTs to my kitty

(GA and OTs annhiliate each other do they ?

Re: Member Status Revisited

Respected Gentlemen,

It is pleasing to see the numerous responses and reactions elicited by the seed of an idea, coming mostly from leaders, who are undoubtedly respected in their own fields.

Please note that it was not intended to ruffle anyone's feathers, much less "dethrone" or demote anyone, for new laws cannot be made retroactive, or punish the good doer, as hammers are not meant to bruise the carpenter (although they have been used as murder weapons, just as laws have been).

The proposal was rather intended for newbies, with the a dual purpose. The first, being to challenge newbies to "earn their stripes" in the forum, and the second of further elevating the credibility and respectability of CR4, not that it's not credible or respectable, but I am looking forward to the day when no self-respecting engineer on planet earth hasn't heard of CR4.

I believe CR4 has helped hundreds, perhaps thousands already, who were struggling with an engineering or technical problem, and only saw the brilliant solution from the many members who supplied their own facet to the gem.

This added feature would surely be a feather to CR4's cap.

Upon reflection, I see no need for statuses to be given, I have no need to be a Guru for example.

I think as long as someone can see the relationship from GAs to OTs, eg. just how many of each have been attained, that is enough......

Agreed with AG

You will see too many (including a few of me ) which has sorted out the OPs doubt or problem and landed up in 0 GA points.

Who really bothers about GAs, through the posts, we learn and disseminate else we will all be islands.

You ask anybody on the forum (Min qualification > 500 posts and hence Guru or as per your definition > 50GAs and hence Master and find how many times he has said to himself (not posted ) hey I didn't know that/ let me go to the link and find.

Number of times in fact we get GAs when the links are provided, but that does not take out the credit from unlinked ones.

How did you guess?

I really don't remember seeing you then, (anyway had I seen you then you wouldn't have been here), now a days we have mellowed quite a lot. I always feel ashamed that my great grand gremlin while spawning did a such minor thing for graduation- only chernobyl I still feel ashamed to call him a Gremlin. He is gust a Gremnil.

You earhlings can only guess - if and then. We do't, we are technically more advanced - we do and see.

Experimentation is the essence of life. And like essence sometimes life too gets lost/dissipated. We have to see that too.

Fuzzi Wuzzi was a bear.

Fuzzi Wuzzi had no hair.

Fuzzi Wuzzi wasn't very fuzzy,

Was he?

There for, kind sir, I challenge you to a duel, to the death. As the gentleman and Nobel Prince that I am, I will allow you to choose the weapons. I shall choose the field of honour.

Familiarize yourself with the Code_Duello. I give you 24 hours to respond.

I suggest we have the duel in the tropics. Brits love warm beer.

Or we could duel in your neck of the woods and warm their beers in the hearth.

Or we could nuke 'em (the beers, not the Brits).

Or we could fly Bricky back from Blighty, put him in the microwave and then drink the beers, including his.

Sorry, you get to choose the weapons. I get to choose the field of honour.

I choose: Vatnajokull

Much to my advantage. As Everyone knows, Texans blood evaporates at anything less than cellar temps.

You just like the place because it's hard to pronounce. Anyway, Texans are better equipped to handle cold weather than most people think. It's the ambient levels of alcohol in our veins. And the chili (which burns twice).

Here, have a habanero. My weapon of choice.

You're gonna need that beer, Pal. And a Sno-Cone.

I am not sure why still the administrator is silent

The respected members are talking about hard drives, meeting at the crack of Dawn et al

And now people are killing each other over Dawn. I really am amazed but earthbeings are like that.

I can only advise Eu to contact del He has a few bows and arrows in his arsenal.

But looks like by now both are plaqued . I have just did something woth their weapons so that the backfire - does it supposed to bean firing on backside?

And Frontfire at that distance of 20 paces can miss but not backfire.

Now I leave it on all the other respected members t design plaques for them.

BTW: are bow strings made with Cats Gut - seem to have heard somewhere - del should confirm.

There was a brief period when you'd see those damn fish in nearly every pub you entered. OK, they are pretty funny Mrs K bought some infernal talking Christmas tree a few years back, and whenever young ones visit at Christmas I'm not allowed to turn it off. It's a bit like this one. The thing has some kind of PIR trigger and drives me insane after a few minutes.

It's a tough call, but I think they'll both die laughing. Collateral could be high as well.

" Europium can get quite elemental in his reactions, though."

I might point out that europium is the rarest of the rare-earth elements, is soft as butter (I have the milk of human kindness by the quart in every vein) and is the most violently reactive of them all (Eu doesn't suffer PerpMo's, Tin-Hats, GTUs and trolls willingly).

Europium is also used to make really cool stuff that glows -- long-persistance phosphors and stuff -- like my avatar.

Europium is also responsible for the R in RGB. Without me you'd see just a sickly cyan, blue or green image on your boob tubes. You have a lot to thank me for.

So there!

"If black holes emanate gravity, do white holes emanate levity?"

No it isn't. Black holes "evaporate," and the smaller they get the faster they fizz off, eventually detonating in a blinding flash (the explosion being fueled by extreme levity). Just ask Steven Hawking! (but if you wanna see him ROFL, you'll have to give it time)

Considering the recent invasion by questionable claims and conduct it is my opinion that a Bozo should button be added as a selection when grading the viability of answers.

Not a fool, being a fool is a time honored profession dating back many centuries, one I am proud of being accused of.

No we need a Bozo button that will add a flashing 'red bozo' as voted by their peers notification that will appear on the avatar block.

Good answers can come from any sector and 'out of the mouths of babes' as it were.

Bozo statements take a very special individual, many of who actually get voted into office, scary.

"Bozo statements take a very special individual, many of who actually get voted into office"

An auspicious observation, to be sure!

Now, if you add a measley little 'n' to Bozo, you get Bonzo, right? Now, didn't one of our recent presidents star in a film making mention of a certain Bonzo? My goodness yes!

(Notice that the wife sleeps in her own bed, but the chimp does not. Hmm...)

You can not get bozos selected so easliy.

I propose that minimum ten B grades are mandatory to get a GB point.

This is logical since

2 Clicks = A,

B should be more than A (With the curves I propose 10 a la Bo Derek - see again B ) Again I miss a smiley with a lecherous look

Then at least 10 GBs will select you to be a BG (Bozo Guru)

10th Dan GB = MB (Master Bozo) = 100 GBs

10th Dan MB = GMB (Grand master Bozo) - beyound that I don'y know.

Now gimme a GB point. and be fast.

With all this series Talk, it seems that we need more silly statuses.

Anyway is it Duck season? no witty remarks from Duckinthepond
