Is the average CR4 member in Timbuktu ?

03/20/2009 5:40 PM

Out of curiosity, I wanted to know where the average CR4 member is from. It would have been a bit much to analyze every individual, so I took data from the list of member countries. I've taken just a few liberties with how I crunched the numbers ; Location has been taken as the capital for each country. Longitude and Latitude have been rounded up. Since the earth is somewhat inconveniently flattened, I've treated it as a sphere.

First off, you can't simply average the longitudes – for instance, people in Siberia and Canada would end up averaged as living on about 0 degree longitude. Hence I've extrapolated the locations into Cartesian form. The origin is the centre of the Earth, X is Eastward, Y is Northward, and Z is towards zero latitude and zero longitude.

To reflect the number within each country, I've weighted the co-ordinates. In effect working out the 'centre of gravity' (not that there's much gravity in this subject yet….).

My end results (columns I,J,K) would seem to place the average person in Mali.

If there are any glaring errors in country locations or members/numbers, I'll adjust it. For now, can anyone see a better way of finding the average location ?

Before you interpret this as confirmation that I've completely taken leave of my senses, I'll tease you a little. Since the largest groupings are America and India, I may develop this to find out where the 2 highest concentrations of members are. Think of it like drawing a contour map of member density. Ultimately, it's not really about where CR4 members are. More to do with finding clusters on a sphere. I may elaborate on that later. For now, I'd just like to see what folk think of how the data has been analyzed. Is it fair/representative as an 'average'.

Not sure if that table is clear enough, but the final weighted XYZ values are ; 0.20947947,0.306286, 0.274203. End result ; Latitude 20.63123, Longitude -0.-3381.That's somewhere in Mali.

(note - the final co-ordinates are within the Earth, so some Pythagorean juggling is needed to extrapolate onto the Earths 'spherical' surface as latitude/longitude)

I shall run and hide whilst the onslaught begins................

Thanks, and sorry if I inferred my return was recent. I've been back for a couple years, I was just gone when this thread started

And, not sure if I want to rehash the manual calculations, I was just curious to see how close my results were to yours.

So, if you ever worked out a location using the original data and your method, I'd be curious to see what point you came up with. But no need to dig it all back out again because mine was sacrificed, as all Buddhist Sand Art is. ;-)

For now though, my bedith callith... good night and see you later.

I have to admit I got bored too.

The last blogs I followed ended up in non ethical disputes.

Same here, sort of.

I was pretty active here prior to deploying. Upon return I had both personal and professional issues that have kept me away from active participation.

But, now that I find myself among the ranks of the unemployed... scraping by to make ends-meet... sending out countless resumes... picking up side design work to keep food on the table... a work-from-the-home Independent Mechanical Design Consultant, I hit the forums up a little more often to seek design advice (especially electrical) and as a needed break from my present reality.

But, I have noticed the flavor of the forums have changed since 2008. Everything evolves I suppose.

It's good to see you and Gwen around. Maybe we could take over some threads to get them to a decent level?

Ditto - We might need to start from scratch, else we'll get 'archived'. Sorry to Gwen and Java if that joke isn't clear (not having seen you both for a while) - admin did some 'tidying up' and archived certain threads (in a format that ironically makes them unavailable). This topic still has some mileage in it, though it's very much a 'back burner' thing for me. Puzzles amuse me and this one, as per my original post, can be posed very easily yet is hard to resolve. Some people like to 'blank' when they have free time, which is fine by me, but I like to think about abstract problems - a personal thing, but I find it more relaxing.

Much pleased to see you all back. Continue from here or work it over from scratch ? You don't need to be involved, this is coffee time stuff. The question was rhetorical in part. Some people enjoy TV, some partying. I like those, but abstract problems are also fun - they can end up with commercial ideas, and people who think live longer.

That sucks, they didn't put the Bath in the Closet did they? I mean, that's really poor design.

I could see getting some more mileage out of the topic, or we can start a new topic and see how it flies. Not sure if this one would spark enough interest, but I'm game for either rehashing or refreshing the forums a little and getting some activity back on the site. We just need a few key, and respected participants to fuel it.

Yeah, but it ain't called a 'restroom' for nothing. If you have an especially smelly one, you just know some hot looking gal will be waiting to use it next.

I am subscribed to new thread, but have to stifle my giggles first !

If I lived in Mali, I too would want a roomy underground bunker. It would probably be cooler down below.
