Check your math:

42^2 + 6 = 1770

Check my notation:

42^2 + 42 = 1806

There's nothing wrong with Mikerho's notation. You seem to have misinterpreted it, and your own version looks clumsier (although it's not 'wrong'). I guess you could have also used "42.42 + 42".

Kris, thanks - I feel vindicated, albeit by a squirrel no less. My daughter:

is out to get squirrels. Her words: "I'll take 'em down!! They don't stand a chance against me!" I told her that squirrels can be our friends - to "Live and Let Live". She knows that if she goes against me she'll get her a@@ beat, but sometimes she just goes for it anyway.

(Really, you have nothing to worry about - the redneck squirrels of North Carolina taunt her no end and she's never caught one yet).

You're welcome, although a squirrel-kiss can be the kiss-of-death sometimes !

Nice dog, but what type is she ? The ears are humongous !! I can't joke too much - Mrs K has a Yorkie, and when it was a small puppy the ears were as big as the body !

I hope you're not saying you walk the thing from Akron (where 'burn rubber' takes on a whole new meaning !) to North Carolina . It'd get beat up by some Bob Cats on the way

I may start logging in soon, typing my name each post is even more of a pain !

She's a miniature pinscher or min-pin as they are affectionately called. They usually have their ears cropped when young, but somehow she got passed by (I like it). Actually, I am not with her mother any more, but I get visitation and I pay doggie support. I had to move away from NC when I lost my job in June. Muuuuch better job now - working in the medical device industry.

Are you having trouble logging in? I hope it isn't serious - like a virus/malware or something.

Oh, and her name... is Bambi Jo.

Re: Math Problem

04/04/2009 4:30 AM

Wow - I never knew they cropped dogs ears ! It would make for a good chat on one of the animal blogs (there's a fair number of them running). I'm glad Bambi Jo didn't get cropped, it seems a bit barbaric unless done for health reasons. Crufts dog show used to be a big event here, but has run into big trouble over similar issues. I'd best not ramble about it here, but CR4 has a lot of dog fans.

Excellent news that you moved on and found a better job. It's always bad when you hear somebody has lost a job, but terrific when you hear it turns out for the better. That's a very positive story for anyone who finds themselves in similar situation.

No problem logging in, I was just experimenting; There's been a lot of discussion about the problems related to posts by Guests, and I just wondered if simply signing my name would make any difference. Nobody has sought clarification that it really is me (which a sane person would do by sending a PM) rather then someone causing mischief by signing 'Kris' (which hasn't happened that I know of). Your question is on a different (and kind/helpful) angle, so I'm happy to clarify. It is I ! The conflicker virus is one usually associated with April 1st, and I've not been targeted/hit by it.

Having experimented a little, and found no problem with adding a name (rather than signing in/ registering) I shall now revert to normal and not check the 'anonymous' box. When people want to post while not logged in, the system could request some form of name be entered to help distinguish between Guests. When members want to post anonymously, the system could use 'Anon wxyz' (where wxyz is cryptically linked by admin to the user number that people already have).

My final philosophical thought - that stuff not related directly to the thread is often very useful.

Many thanks, Mike

Kris

Like we can't see the bushy tail and sharp teeth and nails hidden behind that furry guest Kris. And the Mouse Trap won't hurt my finger either, NOT going to find out mate, next you will complain cause no one would pull your finger

Many moons ago when listening to Morse code you would start recognising individuals by the way they keyed.

If you hadn't been that furry little expletive keying those notes, some thinking they were cute guest would have gotten third degree burns.

Re: Math Problem

04/06/2009 9:16 PM

OK, you had me going for a minute there before it came to me that 1 x 1 + 1 = 2, 2 x 2 + 2 = 6, 6 x 6 + 6 = 42, 42 x 42 + 42 = 1806 and so on. Hey, it's been sixty years since I was in high school (actually, it was sixty-three years!)(but who's counting?).

But the real reason for this response is to brag about my late Wheaten Terrier, Lady. Before I had the side porch converted into a closed office area, we had three squirrels who would come right up onto the porch for the bread and grain I had put mout for them in the winter.

The squirrels would tease Lady by sitting on the other side of the glass door and chatter at her. She would bark and carry on and lunge for the door, but those squirrels knew she couldn't get at them and that made them all the bolder and they would redouble their teasing antics.

She died last summer but the squirrels still hang around, but now I have a special feeder right outside my office window so I can watch them. My present Wheaten, Tess, could care less about squirrels. She just sits on this side of the window and watches them. Obviously, she's thinking, "You just wait until I get my claws on you!"

I just had to put my two cents in.

As you can see, I just discovered the emoticons!

So, sue me awreddy!

I may be off-topic for the most part, but what I said had to be said!

Right off the top of the heap is this photo of Lady meeting Roscoe at Culpepper, VA in 1998. Roscoe was the first Wheaten Terrier we had seen with the exception of Lady and she was quite reserved with him. He, of course, was glad to meet her!

Well, I'll be darned. It worked the first time! Cowabunga!

Mikero,

Please forgive the confusion. My reply above was a poor attempt at humor.

I scratched out the first part of my reply after I realized that I had carelessly misinterpreted your notation. My reply says, "Check my notation" - this was meant to be an admission of my own mistake ... I guess should have put an "oops" in there somewhere . GA by the way.

You guys are so funny! It's simply the number multiplied by the number that follows it (in numerical order). 1x2=2, 2x3=6, 6x7=42, 42x43=1806, 1806x1807=3263442. Why make is look more complex than it is?

#3's formula is no more complexed than yours. You can easily get your formula by rewriting the formula from #3. What makes you like yours better is that it's yours. I'll give you a good answer though since you've found a nice way to rewrite the equation from comment #3.

Re: Math Problem

04/10/2009 2:48 AM

Because we can !

20 = 1

21 = 2

22 + 21 = 6

24 + 2.23 + 2.22 + 21 = 42

28 + 4.27 + 8.26 + 10.25 + 9.24 + 6.23 + 3.22 +2.21 = 1806

216 + 8.215 + 32.214 + 84.213 + 162.212 + 244.211 + 198.210 + 302.29 + 258.28 + 188.27 + 118.26 + 64.25 + 30.24 + 12.23 + 4.22 + 21 = 3263442

All the above is a sort of binary. Using coefficients for each power of 2 makes it easier to expand onward. Of course, you need to multiply out all the coefficients to get the final answer. Electronic calculators all go to binary at some point, but there are probably different ruses to speed up the work on the really flash ones. There was a link I posted somewhere in this thread, saying how large multiplications are quicker if broken down into component steps. Thought I'd play a little. Keeping it all in pure binary doesn't' show any nice pattern. Curse that additive term ! If you really want, you can 'simplify' multiplication (not that it's really any different). Even the last number given above could be squared with a 16x16 grid, though I did it by cross-multiplying on paper.

Roger is currently on the 17th term, so the next number would need a 131072 x 131072 grid. A team of people could work on it at the same time, and also verify others cells. Allowing 1m2 per cell, a decent size ranch could easily accommodate that.

A ranch, about 100 people, and copious amounts of beer is all it takes. Some cells might require a laptop, but apart from that, the principle is sound.

Don't feel too bad, Roger. You didn't let anyone down, the computers did.

Remember that episode of Star Trek where the Jack-the-Ripper demon got into the ship's computer? They told the computer to compute pi to the last digit to fill up its memory and drive out the demon. Well, you might have discovered something that could do that job faster!

Even if you did find the elusive term, it might have broke Globalspec's servers!

Someone finally proved Fermat's Last Theorem a few years ago. Someday, someone will find Pink's Elusive Term!

Is this sequence well-defined? I wonder because there is no definition of the term X0. A look at the formula Xn+1 = Xn(Xn + 1) or Xn+1 = (Xn)2 + Xn has no solution for n=0

Your last number is wrong. It should be 10,650,056,950,806. You have probably run up against your calculator/program's integer limit.

What calculator/program did you use to calculate these values? I'd be interested in knowing.

Hi,

Next no supposed to be 3263442...

Here under the solution...

1

1*1 +1 =2

2*2 +2 =6

6*6 +6=42

42*42 +42 =1806

1806*1806 +1806 =3263442

Almost anything you like.
By deffinition there must be an infinite number of possible solutions to such a small series.
I'm sure some extremely complex mathematical (although ..who said it has to be maths based?) equation or function could justify almost any answer.

Plug 'em into a curve fitting program.

Hi Kris, I think you're missing some place holders.

The calculator you posted shows e+208, which I'm assuming means 10208 however the problem is that the number:

273924503086030314234102342916746862811943643675809
1462794736794160869202622699363433211840458243863492954873728399236975848797430631773058075388342946

has only 151 digits, which seems to mean it should actually be:

273924503086030314234102342916746862811943643675809
146279473679416086920262269936343321184045824386349295487372839923697584879743063177305807538834294600
000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
00000

Which means of course that for the last 58 places your calculator said "I give up".

If I'm missing something here, let me know. The effort though was magnificent. I stopped trying after 6 in the sequence.

Your quite right Roger ! I really should have bothered to look at the number of digits (about the most fundamental check to make). Oddly, the last digit seemed to make sense. Not a good basis to go on, but reasonable for some OTT fun. Now I've made an error, I shall have to go check and find the correct answer for that place in the series. This will probably not benefit me one jot, bit it's a giggle to do so .............

It's cool. You've inspired me. I've responded with several more terms. I don't know if they are right or not, but it was fun to do. I can't believe how calculating these terms are entertaining me!

That's easy....3,263,442

To find the next number, take the sum of the number and the square of the number

1squared +1 = 2, 2squared+2=6, 6squared+6=42, etc.

I love MATH!

Re: Math Problem

3263442

This problem is obviously no challenge for CR4 members... or third graders for that matter.

1x2=2

2x3=6

6x7=42

42x43=1806

1806x1807=3263442

It is similar to the old, "place a penny on the first square of a checker board and double the amount for each successive square. How much money would it take to fill up the checker board?" Actually, the only variation is adding 1 to the previous sum and using that as the multiplier.

Re: Math Problem

Simple problem...

seeing to your question, 1 square is 1 and add 1 with that is 2,

2 square is 4 and add 2 with that so its 6,

similarly 6 square is 36 and add 6 with that so u get 42,

and 42 square is 1764 and add 42 with that so you get 1806.

So the next number must be square of 1806 ana then add 1806 with the result, so u get 3261636+1806=3263442.

problem solved...!!!!!!

This was a fun little exercise. I stuck it up in front of my small group adn gave them 1 minute. We all got the concept, but since non had calculators, we could only get the 3,263,442. This was a snap in EXCEL, and fun.

As inspired by Kris, I've tried to go as far as accuracy allowed. I'm not sure these are correct and would appreciated verification.

That's as far as we've gotten. Good luck to anyone trying to top that.

The last one looks a bit 'iffy'

(for anyone who doesn't notice my earlier post, I messed around. Just an itty-bit.)

I'll GA anyone who can do it for real (or at least provide a verifiable way).

You can have one anyway, Roger. In part for my naughtiness, in part for picking up an 'error', in part for summarizing, and mainly for finding a nice on-line calculator. I've enjoyed this little bit of fun.

Yeah, me too. Nothing like finding something completely irrelevant and applying ten times more effort to it than is required to get answers nobody cares about.

The really twisted part, is that I want to know the correct final number on the list ! Utterly useless to me, but I just want to know. Dammit, I need to know ! It's like not having solved the final clue in a crossword/looking for a washer I dropped on the floor. Even worse, I shall ponder this loss for longer than it would take me to find it.

Fortunately, I've found a more useful matter to ponder.

I hear you. Luckily having my computer crash twice has tempered my enthusiasm. I just hope some other sad CR4 member takes up the challenge and delivers that last term.

Ok, I've got the 15th term (the real 15th term). Enjoy!

Enough you say? No, I'm not stopping. Next up, the 16th term. I'm going to reserve time on a supercomputer to get this to 20 terms (just kidding, at least I think I'm kidding).

Alright, here's the 16th term. Since the calculator I'm using is java script. I figured out that if I used it in firefox and made it a lower priority in my task bar, I can actually do work while it's running. I'm pretty sure the next term will take several hours to calculate, but now I can do it in the background, so I'm going for it.

Dear Roger Pink,

I think you have too much time on your hands.....I printed out the 1st 15 terms to hang in my classroom, my 11th grade students were impressed......of course I'm the strange one finding this all very amusing!

Christine,

You may be right.

I can only hope your 11th grade students appreciate this tedious and absurd way of wasting time. The lesson here is, if you do anything in life, especially wasting time, don't hold back.

I have to go, I think I'm about to be fired.

New York Rules!

Good grief, Roger !!! I am in awe

Did you use the same program ? How many cups of coffee did it take to run ? Have you tried to cross-check/verify it in any way ? Did you get interrupted by a microsoft update ? This is causing question overflow in my head. There's no way that I can resist checking that magnificent work, but it may have to wait for the weekend.

The next number in the sequence would almost be worthy of printing-off as wallpaper ! CR4's Merchandise project should be notified of this. It seems a bit much to send off for a mug, but CR4 numeric bog-paper would definitely get my interest

The options for checking seem limited - length of number, start/end digits, 2 different calculators, back-checking with a quadratic. I don't know whether to try estimate calculation time, or just get on with it. This will drive me round the bend unless I follow it to absurdity. If the 17th hasn't been published anywhere yet, can it be copy protected ?

Despite the lack of proof, I'm going to give you a GA. Even if it's wrong, or your having a little bit of fun revenge for my earlier wind up, the post is worthy for it's suck-the-marrow-and-gargleness !! We'd all be living in caves if noble individuals didn't max-out on the seemingly absurd
