PC vs Mac

04/23/2009 10:41 PM

I was watching TV tonight and saw another one of those PC vs Mac commercials - this is the one with the PC guy in a biohazard suit -

So the question is, why do all the viruses hit the PCs and not the Macs?

I've heard various unconvincing arguments over the years -

PCs are stupid, Macs are brilliant.

PCs are of the devil, Macs were made by angels.

Not enough people use Macs to make creating a virus worth the effort.

etc.

So, what's the real story?

By truncates I mean the stuff I want to see doesn't fill the screen, and is in a box squashed to the left, with a background, on the right.

It sort of bothers me.

To have posts go into my own site with breaks, I have to now go in by firefox.

Frankly I miss my HP Workstation, and MS programs that worked for me for the sort of writing I do, when I am on.

Hello again Transcendian,

Thanks for the reply post and explanation.

You know you can still work with Windows on an Apple computer. Any Apple site will sell windows software that is ready to be used on an apple.

I had windows works or office on my Mac when I bought it but removed it. The reason I did so was because the reason I got a Mac was to stop any virus attacks, which always seem to be aimed at windows software. So I am trying to use what is on the Mac thraight out the box. Of course you can get lots of other Mac software as well. Some very similar to Windows word etc.

Take care and thanks once again for the post..........bb

I might have a tip that will get you around the text as a single block. When you want to start a new paragraph, hit Shift+Enter instead of just Enter. I believe the Shift works as an 'override' that forces a new line.

The problem is you will have to do this every time you want to start text on a new line or add a blank line. I used the Shift+Enter repeatedly to insert the blank spaces between these two blocks of text. Otherwise, I would have had to enter a period for each empty line like I have seen others do. Give it a try and see if it works for you.

Hi babybear,

Transcendian is using a Mac, and had the same problem. I don't know if he mentioned it here, but the solution he found is here. Hope it helps. To save you jumping around, I'll quote ;

This is not a Question.

This is just a note about how to get line break spacing to take.

What you do is put a [ then a p then a ] where you want to create a line space. Apologies to all that tried to get that through to my me.

I'm putting this here, figuring more people will see it here.

Figure if I have a problem, somebody else is likely to have the same problem.

also......

When I went from an HPworkstation to a Mac my posts to CR4 would appear as one long paragraph, instead of appearing with line breaks.

It made it difficult for readers.

I read a little about HTML, and tried <s, and then brackets with a p in between, and have therefore achieved posts, that are easier to read.

Sparkstation posted some useful info here in relation to browser/formatting issues.

Re: PC vs Mac

Hello again Kris, Please let me know if the sentence following this has a line space Has it? I was told by another kind person that either ALT or CTRL followed by RETURN, would do this also. No probs, it is just that until my post gets through and I can read it on-line, I cannot tell if the given solution is working for me. Whatever, it all adds to my knowledge, and I can do with a little extra of that at the moment!

The other problem I have is I cannot see, and so cannot use any of the formatting, spell checker etc buttons. So I may download Firefox in the long run. But I want to get used to using Safari first for a while.

Tale care..........................

Between the last two paragraphs I used the method you advise, so please tell me if you can also read and or see the formatting language?

It looks like the second method worked, but the first didn't ;

The first block of text in your post begins "Hello" and ends "at the moment!". Looking at the total post, the paragraphs each end with the following words ;

that at the moment!

Safari first for a while.

Tale care..........................

the formatting language?

I hope that makes sense - I can read your post with paragraph breaks all OK, after the words "at the moment!"

If you can see/have all the icons in the Editor box, there is a paintbrush symbol. It has something to do with tidying up the format, but I don't know exactly what effect it has (other than the description says it is useful if pasting a reply that has been initially typed in Microsoft Word and similar.

Am I right in thinking you copy and paste stuff via a larger font size on a word processing program ? If so, it might help to mention which one.

Because your difficulty here is compounded by vision problems, I think it would be quite justified to ask CR4 admin directly for help. Mark (mgaulin) is their programming guy, and will know best how CR4's system responds to different browsers. Ordinarily I wouldn't suggest that, but accessibility for people with visual problems is an important matter and I think they would want to work with people to find a solution.

Keep posting, and ask for people to confirm paragraph format if needs be. I'm sure this can be resolved with a little bit of testing. You may already be there, looking at the second method you tried in the post I'm replying to now. Give me a test back if you want, with the following form ;

Paragraph one something something.

Paragraph two something something.

Paragraph three. Are there 3 paragraphs showing ?

Hello, I assume it is Kris..................?

I did used to copy any paste from Word, when it was the only way I could type and save what ever I had done when, at any time my computer may go down. Now I type direct into the site.

The first was something like press ctrl or alt. But I keep forgetting what to press. The method you sent I have memorized thanks. Though I have the other method copied to brush up on!

I cannot see any format buttons at all!

======================================== You have three paragraphs showing, yes.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am going to do two rows of three lines. On the first three I will type

after finishing the line.

On the second lot of three I will press return then type

. Here goes..........

This is a test with p and square 'things!

This is a test with p and square things!

This is a test with p and square things!

=========================================== This is a test with p and square things! Used after I press return.

This is a test with p and square things! Used after I press return.

Thanks for the name Mark mgaulin. I may ask.

Your first test had 3 paragraphs ending with "things!". The second had two paragraphs ending with "return".

I think you need to ask mgaulin why you cannot see the format buttons in the CR4 editor. Have a read of the posts by mgaulin in this thread. Having read Mark's comments there, I'm going to post this question. Hang on, and look at the new questions list................done it.....

How as the spacing between the two lots of three lines? Was it one space on the first three and two on the second three?

Hi Kris,

Thanks for helping me out on this.

That is what I was after. Line/blank/line/blank etc

I have just posted my question if you want to read it. Short and to the point.

I am having a hell of a job staying on-line...........The ISP is blaming BT and visa versa! The fact is even when I could get on-line when the old computer was working I was not able to because of the dropped connection.

In the last week I have been on-line for about three hours or so max! I am sick to death of BT's automated messages! Just had it up to here, you know? For what amounts to a 'service economy' we are not getting much service are we? They say I should use a normal 'land-line' to test whether I still get all the interference. I said I cannot see why the interference (really bad crackling on the line) should stop my broadband from working. All I want to know from BT is if there line is a good connection from my flat to the exchange. When I was talking to someone this morning at BT to ask about my line he came back with a 'corker!

He went away and came back after a few minutes and said: "your line is perfectly clear. There is just a couple of points which stick out. One is all the crackling on the line"...............Now, that is a quote and half right? Like saying "sorry Sir, there is nothing wrong with your car, it just got smashed to bits on the Motorway"!

Take care..............

Aaaaggggghhhhhhh!!!!! BT Hell !

I wouldn't go near them with a 10 mile twisted pair. They own the infrastructure, and don't they just know it. Prior to being forced to allow other operators access ('local loop unbundling', or something like that), they were complete *******'s. They used to refuse people Migration Authority Codes (to enable people to swap ISP, telling folk that the problem was not BT's, because they set up a separate division to handle such matters. Not much has changed in their overall attitude to customers. I once had a late evening call from BT sales, and after I explained that I'd got them not to list my number so as to avoid unwanted sales calls, the guy indignantly said "I'm not a sales person, I'm with Customer Services".

Luckily we have cable in this area, and I can avoid having to use the BT *******'s. Google "BT hell line crackle". I don't know that it will help find a solution, but you may feel slightly better knowing that you're not the only one being held to ransom by BT.

If you google BT line test, you can find some ways of checking, though I can't vouch for how reliable/useful they are.

Re: PC vs Mac

04/28/2009 6:40 AM

In 1984, I bought my first PC - a Mac.

At the time, the computer department were recommending DOS based PC's to everyone. It seemed they operated in a way which was more familiar to the computer experts.

Engineering went their own way - we chose Macs. Each one arrived, the engineer unpacked it and it was operational within half an hour.

One manager selected a PC because he wanted to use Autocad. It took a computer expert about 2 days to get it set up and running properly. The manager then needed to be trained how to use it. I think it was over a week before he was able to use it in even a rudimentary way.

Mining had a number of PC's and 1 Mac. Practically all their work wound up being done on the Mac, but the computer department were still recommending, and in fact insisting PC's be used.

For many years after that, I continued with Mac's.

Eventually, after I retired, I couldn't afford a Mac, so wound up with a PC running Windows.

No great problem setting up and learning to use it - a far cry from the DOS days!.

Stability, however, is awful. Like the website set up: "www.windows.crash_crash_crash". None of my Macs ever had this sort of trouble despite my often running programs so far in excess of the current capabilities that they took all night to complete. I would hate to risk that with Windows!

Linux was quite good and seemed to offer considerable versatility together with much better stability, but not as stable or easy to use as the Mac.

If I could afford it, I would go back to a Mac tomorrow.

It is no accident that the Mac has a huge following in areas like graphic arts, music etc. When I mentioned this to a man who was making masters for screen printing (on his PC), he grunted "99% of the truly creative people in the industry use Macs". He regretted being talked into a PC for his work.

Perhaps I move in unusual circles, but I have never heard Mac people running down users of Windows, except to say they wouldn't willingly use it themselves.

A friend is an expert on networks. He has both Mac and PC but uses the Mac by preference.

It is rare for anyone to willingly swap from Mac to PC, but most who swap from PC to Mac stay with Mac.

Enough rambling. This is, of course a biased assessment from an ex Mac user and, as such, probably unreliable.

One of the things I do is recommend computers to folks depending on the use intended and the personality. Some are MAC people others could go either way but more often than not after conferring it is a PC they get. But not just an off the shelf type that has internally managed conflicts which manifest instabilities that are then blamed on the O/S. They get a suitable compilation of components which can be effectively termed as a system. Stability is not something gained by sacrificing performance.

If you want to get the groceries and like to have bragging rights in the canyon you need a performance package in your ride. Same goes in the box

Back to the original question ... it isn't that viruses hit PCs. Rather, its that viruses hit Microsoft software - Windows, Internet Explorer, Office. There are many alternatives to IE. I like Firefox, myself. Open Office is a pretty good substitute for Office. There are also alternatives to Windows but I don't know much about them. Using non-Microsoft software eliminates probably 99.9 % of the vulnerabilities.

Hello bmorrow492, You hit the nail on the head when you say it is not PC's, but, rather MS software which is targeted. Nothing wrong with PC's or MS as long as you can find a way of getting around the virus/Trojan problem. I feel MS do not want to clear this up, because I know it is more than possible to do so. It is also more than possible to 'automate' a whole lot more when it comes to configuring stuff, but they do not do it. I feel it is because they (perhaps) have a finger in too many other companies who do sell anti virus ware? All I know is, 'computing' in general can be made a lot easier than it is at the moment. Take care...................

Re: PC vs Mac

04/29/2009 1:10 AM

why do all the viruses hit the PCs and not the Macs?

Because MS software has more holes than Swiss Cheese!

It is fun reading the PC users Versus the Mac users.

It is like on other forums where fanboys argue about Xbox 360 Versus PS3 (Well Wii won)

Maybe in the long run it will be the same "Linux won"

because it has the best reason for a dutch person , IT IS FREE!

(oh and stable, not much virus, worms etcetera)

One thing the argument yes but when i install, a virus-checker,spy-ware checker, bloat ware checker, registry cleaner (and so on) my PC will work ok is IMHO not a promising argument, and that 98% of the world uses PC's shows only how devious MS is in monopolising the market. MS has not the cleanest record in how they do business.

Really

Yeah MS has a lot of old equipment out there yet limping along and being thrashed by Internet probes their systems were not designed to thwart.

Many users of the older machines still don't use any or very in adequate or dubious virus software. When you add this to the exploitation of social networking a plethora of botnets and wormdrives are puking out this maligned mutating crud onto the web.

When you have a machine designed for your purposes and or environment of use the events most often heard of do not occur.

If the computing public were required to maintain their systems and equipment in a responsible manner this subject would be rarely discussed.

*top of the head warning

Somewhere I ran into the factoid that we could remove 50% of the air pollutants* by tackling only 10% of the older cars - not the classics, but the beaters. Hence tailpipe watchers.

I'm getting that but it is not the beaters that are the trouble it is the manner which the user employs them.

Taking a machine designed for windows 95, 98 or newer and loading Linux to use as web and email access unit is a responsible action.

If this crimps MS then MS needs clean up their act.

This is kind a sort a self sacrifing as I enjoy helping some with computer isses

And yet if your car is truly old you suddenly find yourself free from emission testing requirements because it magically became a 'classic'... of course a classic P.O.S is still just a P.O.S.... something about polishing a turd... Here, full time four wheel drive vehicles and motorcycles are required to have an annual emissions check but 2 wheel drive vehicles need only be tested every two years... I can marginally understand the fulltime 4WD but motorcycles?!?!? and yet there are no pollution control requirements for lawn-mowers, weed whackers, leaf blowers (come on, get a broom or a rake your neighbor is tired of sweeping up your yard debris) or any of the various other gas powered items you can hear roaring away on any given weekend morning. Something tells me emissions checks are about income not the air...

Re: PC vs Mac

I'm a little late on this one, but is never too late to get a poke in at an Apple. Recently I've gained quite a bit of insight into Apples as a pilot friend of mine, who I believe to be oxygen starved, has bought a new Mac notebook.

1. Macs are currently using the Intel x86 processor line, which means they are fully compatible with Windows running in a native mode. While there is nothing wrong with that, I find it incomprehensible that they can use proprietary memory. The difference in the DDR 3 4GB 8500 for the Mac or the PC is that the Mac uses a 200 pin memory card, and the PC uses 204 pin memory card, the price is over double for the Mac memory, or four times the price if you buy it from the Apple dealer.

http://www.mwave.com/mwave/deptNBMEMORY-DDR3.hmx? - sorry, link no longer available

For the price of his one Mac notebook, I have bought one good Toshiba laptop with all the features of the Mac, a low-end Emachine that performs wonderfully as a word processor for my wife, and built a high-end quad core Pentium machine.

There is no doubt that Macs have some useful features; however, one of their features, lightening your wallet is only useful for pilots - at least they have the excuse of oxygen starvation for lavish spending on a rotten apple.

YWROADRUNNER the reason your computers are cheaper than a MAC is to allow you to buy more of them so you might have one that works. 9 months now and no reloads, no defrags and no crashes, except one program on the Windows side It still runs as fast and smooth as it did new! . From a Windows convert I can say the MAC is a better mousetrap!

Hello Captain Ron:

As I previously admitted Macs have some useful features, and have even become semi practical with the advent of them switching to a PC processors and the ability to run PC programs.

As far as being a better mousetrap, I still say they are a better money trap. I must admonish you about shopping for a computer while still suffering from hypoxia. I suggest you have maintenance do a thorough check of the cabin pressurization controls.

Hi bhankiii, Sorry I cannot give a 'definitive' answer. Whether it will be a success I do not know, but I got mine, not to be 'better' than everyone, but because I had it 'up to here' with virus attacks. Even when I had sever anti virus apps. I am a little disappointed that CR4 does not support Safari. Which mean I will have to use a program I did not really want to use, which is Firefox. I wanted to keep to all Mac software where possible. I have read, though I cannot recall where, that Mac uses a different File System and 'Defragments the System as you use it. That my be a possible reason why a virus is not likely to survive? Other than that I cannot say................? Take care................
