Roadways, Left or Right

08/16/2009 1:13 PM

People all over the world drive, either on the right or on the left side. How did this convention come about? Why did the British adopt the left side and others adopted the right side? Is there a logical reason or advantage of one over the other?

Re: Roadways, Left or Right

Back in the early '70s, I lived in Scotland. I had an elderly friend (somewhere in his 80s) who could remember when roundabouts were introduced in the area. The first one was marked by a circle of stones - he didn't know/couldn't remember what type of stone they were made of, but as far as I could gather, they were about the size of shoe-boxes.

When harvest time came the traction engine, pulling the threshing machine etc, couldn't take the curved route around the stones, so went straight over them - reducing them to dust.

Some people would give their right arm to be ambidextrous.

After following all the posts to this thread, I have come to the conclusion that everything was set up to favor the right handed person as that is the most prevalent handedness. In the world of power tools, most machines have been set for RH operation. Table saw arbors tilt to the right, except for one; and that is the Powermatic which from it's beginning has always tilted left. Based on this observation, I wonder if the developer of the LH Powermatic saw was left handed? ( Tool manufacturers have now switched sides and now make saws that tilt Lh and RH. Drill presses are also set up for RH operation. Powermatic now has a drill press that can be used either hand; certainly a good thing for LH users. Portable battery operated tools are now made for either hand operation.

Thanks all for contributing to this discussion. It has been most informative and interesting.
