Let's See How Quick You Are!

03/04/2010 12:47 PM

You have to compute the 6th number. Guessing is futile.

It is said that engineers take 3 minutes to solve this, architects 3 hours and doctors 6 hours. If you guess which the 6th number is, you'll be able to open the excel file. Once you discover it, open the attachment, enter the number as the password, put in your name, save it, and send it on.

What is the 6th number?

1, 2, 6, 42, 1806, ___???

What bugs me is that you thought this piddly little kindergarten puzzle being challenging.

You are right, that was simple. And I am not even an Engineer yet! (just a sophomore)

I can't believe I figured it out, usually I suck at these types of puzzles. How long do we have to wait before we explain how it works?

I didn't want to give away the formula, I saw no point in rewriting the number. You can believe me or not...just not that important to me.

Important enough to you not to register?

gsuhas method is the way I did it and a lot simpler to understand, methinks, as it's simply n*(n+1).

I used the guess and try again method. I think your formula is wrong though mathmatically it should be (n*n)+n

No, I resolved the solution in less than a minute, I just looked for patterns in what was there. I included the excel formula merely to show that I understood the puzzle and could re-create it in excel. I used the excel formula to show how the pattern would continue, I could have done it with my calculator, but it was more fun in excel.

Challenging for most, No.

But a break in monotony and time for some brief fun in an otherwise analytical and boring day, Yes.

I bet you did not even figure it out just went with Doorman's numbers. Since he is right.

You seem to be a bit off with your "challenging" assumption. So far there are only two correct answers... not much, is it?

Also, you just lost a bet. I did not copy Doormans answer, how would I know he was right? Besides, I don't need to copy it. I can post the formula to calculate this simple series, which I might do later, or I might not. It depends.

Not home work fun, so here is more fun. Some would say I am wasting time. I would say they are right and this is a place for technicial questions and answers, however I am in a funk and sharing it with you all.

Hot Wheels and Matchbox stocks are trading higher than GM..

Parents in Beverly Hills fired their nannies and learned their children's names.

A truckload of Americans was caught sneaking into Mexico.

Dick Cheney took his stockbroker hunting.

Motel Six won't leave the light on anymore.

The Mafia is laying off judges.

Exxon-Mobil laid off 25 Congressmen.

Given the simplicity of the puzzle (yes I solved it in less than the allotted time for an engineer - which was less time than it took to write this response) it sounds like a math-based chain letter to me (and wouldn't be the first chain letter I have seen using Excel)!

What Excel file?

I had this calculated (1806 * 1807 = 3,263,442) inside of 30 seconds. I didn't think it was very challenging either.

So, where's the damn Excel file?

Hmmph, I'm bored

The bad thing is that I couldn't even begin to see how to do this. I can read and write and everything just like normal folks and I had no idea what to do with this. There must be a special talent for this sort of thing?

Heck, it's not my bag either.
If you want to get good with this stuff you have to go to your local DIY store and get a big sack of numbers, then try sawing them up, heating them to red heat and beating them with hammers and such like.
i find if I get a bag of '1's with a bit of work I can make arrows out of 'em and do useful stuff like that.
A nice big 3 can make an Asiatic recurve bow too. Most other numbers are just a pain in the ass.

Yeah, I think I sorta understand maths, but sequences are, well, just as mysterious to me as how they get rectangular TV pictures to go through a round wire.

I'm down in the shop this morning soldering nichrome wire to copper wire and having little trouble no matter that most "experts" say I can't do that. Yet, I can't do a number sequence that others do in 3 minutes? I think people have different kinds of intelligence. At least I hope so.

Ach well, but that's an interesting thread: What useful thing can you make of numbers? A 3 is a recurve bow, a 7 is a wire fence stretcher, an 8 is a cable organizer, and so on. I could probably start on the alphabet but I see the attendant coming with my lithium, so ...

Re: Let's See How Quick You Are!

3 minutes?

I took only 3 seconds to find the logic and another 5 seconds to find the answer!

1 X (1+1)=2

2 X (2+1)=6

6X (6+1)= 42

42 X (42+1)=1806

1806 X (1806+1) = 3263442

The puzzle could have been much difficult if you would have it like:

What is 4th number?

42, 1806, 3263442, --------?

Apparently it takes a IQ of 146 or more to understand that you first assess the value of the reward and weigh it against the value of the work involved in the proposed question or task. If the work value is greater than the reward its a simple no go.

It took me about 1 second to see that there was no excel spread sheet attached thus no reward for the work so no point in wasting my time.

Me too, so, I just gave up and came here to hear from the other guys whats inside the excel file. The lack of the reward is the first step to the lack of effort... Gee! Sounds like socialism to me... hehehe. Ok, honestly... I had already seen that some years ago. Wa sable to solve it, but te file was bad, so, here I am writing some loose words.

The next number is "3263442" - 35 seconds, but I am only a mere down under engineer. How? Simple really. Simply sqare the number and add itself.

OK guys, we have all had a lot of fun, solved the problem in a zillion picoseconds and had a barrel of laughs. Now, where does "13" fit in this sequence ...

8,11,5,4,9,1,7,6,10,3,12,2

It doesn't: you've just jumbled up all the numbers from 1 to 12.

Alternatively it could go anywhere: that would then be all the numbers from 1 to 13 jumbled up.

I can't see any pattern.

Well...

If Randall (#73) does not see a recognizable pattern, I don't feel so bad. I see nothing either.

I guess it might fit on the end? Result is, as Randall says, 13 jumbled numbers instead of 12.

The numbers are in ALPHABETICAL order ... "Thirteen" fits between "Ten" and "Three"

Just an out-of-box puzzle.

Well, i did give the right answer (#30 & 32). i then was seeing the enthusiasm generated by this number puzzle. i gave in to an uncharacteristic Machiavellian impulse to muddle things a bit. Sincere apologies. Don't worry about eyesight, after my cataract removal, i can see as good as when i was 40 years younger

3263442 - about 9 seconds. I'm an engineer. And what attachment?

This looked like one of the MENSA questions I had when I applied (about a hundred years ago, it seems). You have to do them at speed.

You have to ADD one to the number, not subtract, then multiply the two.

I can only imagine that this takes an engineer three hours if, like the ones where I work, they take a coffee break or go outside for a smoke between steps.

That's simple. 30 seconds. Square the last number and add the last number to the result. (42) squared = 1764. 1764 + 42 = 1806. Wait until you get into REALLY big numbers!!

The way I determined this is by placing using a row above the series:

*2 *3 *7 *?

1, 2, 6, 42, 1806,

In a series, the previous number is in some relationship to the next number. In this case, it appeared to be a simple multiplication relationship. Placing the number above and between adjacent terms revealed that the relationship is (n)(n+1) where n is the current term. Dividing 1806 by 42 indeed gives 43, which is (42+1), etc.

The 6th number is 3,263,442

2) 2=1+1^2

3) 6=2+2^2

4) 42=6+6^2

5) 1806= 46+46^2

6) 3263442=1806+1806^2

This simple test really does illustrate the marketing fact that, to give
an audience something to feel good about, can get a huge response.

A fact not known or appreciated by the general population.

A pat on the back, even from oneself, can work wonders.
To sell, this is a good illustration, fellow engineers. (sucker punch)

No sales for me with this one....
If it takes a square yard and a half of tripe to cover an elephants

Or more seriously...

"What would you enter into a calculator to test that it was working correctly?"

12345679 x 81 = 999,999,999 substituting any multiple of 9 will yield its own value to the 100 millions, so that, 12345679 x 72 = 888,888,888 12345679 x 63 = 777,777,777 etc.

"engineers take 3 minutes to solve this, architects 3 hours and doctors 6 hours"

tells you that engineers know how to focus on a problem, and won't leave it undone!

architects need to refresh their creativity. they're used to working on a project, leave it to take a break and come back to it.

doctors leave their patients in the hospital and come back to them the next week.
