Mystery Low Piched Humming

07/23/2010 5:22 AM

Hello Guys and Gals.

For the past 10 nights my house has been plagued with a low pitched hum. I can only hear it if I try, and get in the right position. My wife hears it in the quiet of the night, and she can't sleep because of it.

It's arrival coincided with a festival practically next door, but that has gone and the hum remains.

I have shut off the power into the house, and the hum remains.

We are within earshot of several ductings from restaurants, etc, but walking about in the early evening, it could be any of them. In any case they all switch off at 11.30 or so.

The local enviro health guys won't do anything unless I give an address of the nuisance causer!

There was one place I went, an archway through a building, where there is a particular few feet where there is loud (at least in the dead of night) whooping rolling humming sound, although not low, and nothing under there but a pipe leading down to the rainwater drain. The landlady says there is nothing in the building in that area that can be causing the noise.

Is there an Acme Low Hum Detectorisationer?

What other course of action could I try?

Make me look good again guys

Jim

It is still there, and the authorities are still investigating, very slowly I suspect.

The other night it seemed to be much louder, with a broader spectrum of sound. ( the wife agreed). I found the 5.1 sound for the dvd player had been left on, and it was this we had heard. This tells me we are getting used to the noise, because previously, if the 5.1 had been left on, it would have had me hunting round for the cause.

with reference to the elephants low hum, I saw on tv that herd beasts like antelope communicate danger with a low frequency hum. This is how they flee as one when a predator attacks. May account for the effect the noise has.

I will post any developments

Thanks for the continued interest

That's a good question!

I'd like to know the answer as well, did the elephants on the lawn move?

Well, neither. We got used to it, and it disappeared over the winter. A few nights ago it was back with a vengeance, loud, and I thought I could detect a dry bearing noise with it.

Although it disappeared/we got used to it over the cold season, when I was aware of it again, it was bitterly cold, so it isn't a temp/noise correlation.

At least I got one laugh out of it all. The other week I heard the wife on the 'phone to what must have been the assistant to the man who was going to investigate but never did.

She said: 'Mr X said he was going to investigate this noise for us, only...we haven't heard anything.'

I used to put a rubber hose on a large automotive [kitchen?] funnel so my kids and wife could hear all the insects at night when camping. they could not hear it without the funnel. although i could. might help determine direction of source anyways. I wouldn't let the neighbours see you doing this anyways. my wife thought i had tinnitus or active imagination until the funnel.

in my neighbourhood sometimes the transformers on the power poles would hum. also check out doorbell transformers mounted under the floorboards. when we found the one in our former 90 year old house, i think it was original equipment. low frequency hum can travel a long ways. also check large overhead cluster streetlamps for highways /parking lots. now i'm curious too

Could be wind striking a vent pipe at a particular angle, like blowing across the top of a soda bottle. This nearly drove me bonkers in an apartment building once, but the super found it and cut notches in it and put a mesh screen over the top of the pipe.

Good luck!
